Tom Denall’s “Silent Destroyer” (originally built on surplus Sanish “Destroyer” carbines) is a Ruger 77/44 bolt action rifle with a large integral suppressor. Chambered for the .44 Magnum cartridge, it allows the use of a heavy bullet to maximize ballistic potential while remaining subsonic, prevents mechanical action noise by being a bolt action system, and feeds from 3-round detachable box magazines. This particular example has been fitted with a light and small Burris Fastfire red dot optic, and makes for a handy and extremely quiet carbine. Like the DeLisle, but without all of that system’s flaws!

A comparison with an original DeLisle would be interesting. There is very little good info on its noise levels, but it is probably somewhere around 120dB, or maybe even as low as 115dB. It would be super cool if the Silent Destroyer is in the same area or lower.

@@johnparrish9215 are those readings mesured with modern equipment. Not saying I don't believe it, just hard to imagine it as even captive piston rounds that release absolutely no gas outside the casing are usually anywhere from 107-120dB depending on the design. A very practical round to suppress, as you can load a much heavier than normal bullet, say 360-400 gr, and keep it just under the sound barrier. All while staying within safe pressure levels due to the platform style.

@Crosshair84

@@hkdeltasig I own a Silent Destroyer and with the 44, you can have cast bullets or heavy bullets, but not both. Using the factory barrel in the conversion lets you shoot cast bullets in the normal weight range. Going with a fast twist barrel usually removes the ability to shoot cast bullets of any weight accurately; they just don't like the fast twist.

Back when I was doing contract engineering for AAC, I asked them why they no longer made their integrally suppressed Ruger 77/44 guns. They told me that Ruger quality control at that time was so bad that the guns were too inaccurate and they basically had to shoot each new gun to determine if it was accurate before converting it. I don't remember the number of rejects to good guns but, it was astounding the number they discarded for each good gun. I have also heard its better to set the barrel back and chamber strictly for 44 special since the guns are very inaccurate typically shooting 44 special in the 44 mag chamber.

Great rifle conversion. I often wonder why the British Military did not use the Martini Henry for this purpose. OK single shot but very quick to reload and 100% foolproof for the purpose it would serve. There are still brand new ones in stock at the Enfield Armoury even today (in case another Zulu war starts) so plenty around in WW2. They have been converted to fire just about everything from 410 to12 gauge.

@@Britishshooter I mean the noise of a Lee Enfield action and a Martini Henry action is marginable, plus anything can happen so when you're trying not to be caught sneaking around, follow up shots can be very important (ie, what happens when you shoot a sentry and another sentry comes over?) Tom Denall must’ve read my mind. I love the idea of the DeLisle system, and I’ve always wondered about how you’d modernize it. My idea was to have it be select fire with straight-pull bolt action, semi-auto and maybe full auto. Since I’d be adding automatic components, though, I’d need to muffle the sound of the action. I think you could go about that with a padded brass catcher over the ejection port, or you could have it eject out the bottom into a bag. This way, you have maximum silence for the roles that the DeLisle was intended for, but you also have automatic operation for when you need to use it more like an MP5SD.

I disagree, a sub sonic round can still crack, I accept your comment about super sonic projectiles. The noise from a gun shot originates from various sources, as does the noise from a nuclear submarine. Keeping the submarine in mind, in effect, a projectile can cause “cavitation” by its passage through the air (boat tail projectiles were initiated for this among other reasons). If you design and manufacture a projectile which doesn’t cause cavitation, it doesn’t crack (a side benefit is that it’s trajectory is much flatter for longer), it’s really a design for silent sniping.

These were definitely some cool guns. Sort of a spiritual successor to the DeLisle carbines and the soviet VSS Vintorez / AS Val carbines used by special units. A consideration for someone wanting to use heavy bullets is that the twist rate might not stabilize a heavy bullet. AWC silencers was doing internally suppress conversions a few years ago and if someone has a 77/357 or 77/44 hanging around they'd probably still do a conversion today. Or if ruger got interested they could do a take-down internally suppressed run. That would be pretty sweet if they did.

In the UK a company called Law Enforcement International produced a number of delisle style firearms. The made versions of the original using a lee enfield number 4 action and Colt mags. They also produced a remington 700 in .308 with an integral moderator designed for using 200grn sub sonic loads. They're both a lot of fun

5:20 The Silent Destroyer uses a 9" barrel with a permanently attached inner tube to make the length more than 16" inches. The entire outer tube is effectively the expansion chamber of the suppressor. The inner tube vents to the outer tube until the blast baffle. The baffles are all contained in the inner tube. The outer tube is not permanently attached. The SD does not use a ported barrel. That is/was one of its greatest selling points. With an unported barrel and take apart design, you can use cast lead bullets in it. The other designs on the market, when I bought mine, were either ported or sealed designs, requiring the use of jacketed ammunition. 6:01: What you see at the end is the end-cap for the inner tube. The cap is slightly bigger on the muzzle end to retain the outer tube cap. Remove it and you can remove the outer tube cap and outer tube. The baffles can then be removed from the inner tube with the puller tool. There is a tool kit that comes with the gun to do all of this. You can see that kit on the auction page with the Ruger rings. Pretty sure it uses M-baffles in the inner tube, but its been awhile since I've had mine apart. If you're interested in a followup video, I can take mine apart and supply photos of the internals. Feel free to add this information to the description or ask me any other questions about the design.

Hey Ian I really enjoy your videos as they are informative and very fun to watch. A video I'd particularly enjoy if you were able to get your hands on one would be on a Beretta 93r (the burst pistol) as ive seen it in many video games and other famous movies but I really have no idea how they work or if they are even practical. Your review of the H&K vp-70m got me thinking about that gun. Nonetheless keep up the great work and thanks for your plentiful information on not so popular firearms!
