Toyota's engineers decided to outfit a current Prius for racing in the American Rally Association series. While it might not look all that different, the result is one heck of a race car that's more than ready to pound gravel into submission.

I'd like to see an actual Prius rally competition where the only car allowed is the powertrain-unmodified Prius.

In case any of the engineers that worked on this project are currently reading this, I would suggest one more change. If I recall correctly the battery pack for the Prius is stored in the same location as the spare wheel, partially hanging out over the rear axle. Because packaging isn't a concern, and driving enjoyment is a concern, I'd recommend moving it right behind where the central armrest use to be. This should really liven things up. Wost case scenario, I'm wrong, you put the battery, and you only wasted an few hours, a bracket, and a connector.

Battery pack for this model is under the rear seat in production models on the no plug in. Variety like this one.

Wait, don't you need more weight in the back for the car to go more sideways? Also if this is the regular hybrid i'd suggest packing one more pack in paralell - should give more power in the long run.

I have actually found that the weight in the rear of my Prius(an original plugin) actually has some benefits since it allows for a little oversteer on loose surfaces if you drive it right.

There's little weight to strip away to begin with. It's why so many criticized its cheapo feel. It was already a light car.

@@toyotaprius79 These have a curb weight of around 3000lbs, and on average you can remove about 300lbs from any normal car by doing more than just swapping parts for lighter parts. Pulling ALL of the interior, mechanicals from the doors except for the drivers door, most of the dash, and going for lighter weight wheels, you are going to net AT LEAST 300lbs. Heck, electric heated or cooled seats weigh between 30 and 50lbs on their own, or potentially even more.

Prius prime is fwd only. I'm guessing they went with AWD for better grip around the turns

@@bheypuor you're right. But if you look around on some sites, you'll find that owners have discovered that the Prime's battery is literally on stilts above the chassis. There is some room where the spare wheel well is, which is where the rear 6hp motor in the AWD version lives.

Only used to driving 65 in a Prius? Dude, I drive mine 80 or more and the cops just ignore cause I'm in a Prius.

i was doing 70+in a 35, beating a truck at a stoplight, saw the cop about to pull out, slammed on my brakes and all he did was give me the 'slow down' hands and followed me for a block.. i also got it up to 110mph (gps tracked) on the highway racing a jetta.. and won.. thats weird cause I thought they were supposed to be limited at 106mph??

Do laugh always when everyone puts down the prius, yes it has a good mpg rating, but that's for the save the planet folk, it's actually a fun and surprisingly quick little car. Does 0 to 60 in 6.3 seconds, and while that's far from quick at all, it definitely will destroy most cars off the line. Yes, once owned off the line by a prius, they will fly past, but your already laughing your a@$ off, it's a riot. Have a 900 bhp big block and the prius in many ways is more fun.
