Welcome to Atop the Fourth Wall, where bad comics burn. In this episode, Linkara looks at another Silent Hill comic that had potential that was very quickly squandered.

ORIGINAL INFO: Silence will fall… but not today, since this is another Silent Hill comic where nobody shuts up.
RUMINATIONS: While I joke in the later reviews about which one could be considered the worst and don’t give an answer, the honest answer about which of the Silent Hill comics is the worst would have to be Paint it Black. It’s not only because it mangles some good ideas and potentially interesting monsters, but nothing about it makes any sense and NOBODY is likeable. You could argue in ANY of the other Silent Hill comics that there’s someone in there who we can root for, even if they’re not all that great, but not here. Ike Isaacs is an awful human being, simultaneously too pretentious and a hack (he only cares about doing his art one second, then wants to leave his artistic inspiration when he learns he can get rich and live the high life). The cheerleaders are annoying, confusing, and thoroughly awful people themselves. The only person I liked in this whole mess was Joe… who was in maybe two pages and is not involved in the events other than kicking Ike out of the apartment. I hope he ended up with a better roommate, at least. I hear nice things about that Henry Townsend guy.
The fact that Ike not only survived to make it into Dead/Alive but also survived the entire series of comics is probably the worst offense at all. Scott Ciencin tragically passed away fairly recently, so while my remarks towards his writing are indeed insulting, I have to say that, honest to God, if I ever wanted to meet ANY creator to ask them about the awful comics I reviewed, it would be him, since I am genuinely curious about the creative decisions he made with the Silent Hill comics and would have loved to learn more.

I think Ike's deal isn't supposed to be that he refuses to get a job because he only cares about his art... but rather that he refuses to get a job because he's got such an ego that he thinks he should be getting rich off his art and thus regular work is beneath him.

I love Ike's reaction at 25:13 when he's given a gun, "How do you use this thing?" It's a gun Ike. You point and pull the trigger. I mean sure, he might have had problems with the safety, but how is he so stupid that the simpler of tasks escapes him?

This cheerleader Cheryl feels like Scott is trying to make a badass gun toting Kim Possible or Buffy the Vampire Slayer....except he failed to realize that BOTH of them are ALREADY badass cheerleaders and so trying to make something badass even MORE badass just Voids everything out to a terrible state. God i really WISH that WAS Buffy, then maybe she could tell Ike to SHUT up and she get to business on the monsters... Then again Linkara WISHED for Army of Darkness vs Silent Hill and we got Dead/Alive so i should keep my trap SHUT if i know what's good for me.

Are you sure this is Silent Hill, it doesn't seem that way? It just has some monsters in common, but they are just thrown out there, and thus lack meaning. A true Silent Hill comic would focus less on showing existing monsters in the games(just to have some connection to the series) and more on capturing the elments of what makes the series great such as making it more about a single character, then creating new monsters to reflect the person's inner demons. Edit-Do they even have the otherworld in these comics? It's reallly important to anything related to Silent Hill.I don't think the painting world counts.

I actually liked this comic. I was in High School at the time when I read it, but it got the job done. It was my first Silent Hill comic I had read and had hooked me in for the rest of the series. I agree with LInkara on the rest of the series.

I actually just read a novel by Ciencin. He's not a terrible writer...when he's not writing for Silent Hill. It makes me wonder-WHY did he do Silent Hill? Did nobody tell him he was bad at it? Did people keep throwing him at it and hoped it would work? Why does he not do any research? Why doesn't he even try to make likable protagonists? Why are all the plots so....incoherent?

The fact that Scott writes that Silent Hill is abandoned or that people from the outside even think it's abandoned shows that he's basing these comic books off of the movies' school of thought on the town. You know because fans and newcomers alike all agreed that incredibly insightful psychological commentary on the human condition and the anxieties of people that experience trauma or are afraid of trauma they will experience being personified and symbolized by monsters is way less scary than just google image searching monsters from previous stories and throwing them in for no reason other than the classic redlettermedia parody of how studios think fans of things act when they see horrible fan service of *"I SAW ______ AND I CLAAAAAAAAPED!"*. This is the type of adaptation that makes me genuinely lose hope in some creators because it's clear that they either did their research or just experienced the source material and didn't "get it" or they had no respect for the medium or were too lazy and dismissive towards the original to pay it the mind of actually looking at it beyond a surface level Google image search and skimming a plot synopsis written by someone who was drunk and watching Daredevil on netflix while they played. I'm not sure which possibility is worse.

Ya know, Scott Ciencins portrayal of Silent Hill seems to remind me of another creator: Sho Aikawa. Bennett pretty much covered his... creative style. As Silent Hill was usually about the Main Character conquering his or her demons both figuratively and literally and we feel sorry for them, wanting for them to win this psychological battle... Here we have unlikable characters with side characters that are better and likable than the "protagonists", then killed or ignored later, and their styles along with other artists involved become polarizing from "it's bad but not much" to "just plain awful". Also, I was wondering who are your favorite characters in the Silent Hill franchise (even the comics) and why.

Well, he's a writer for some anime like: Angel Cop, Urostukidoji (Legend of the Overfiend), Genocyber, and Violence Jack which were *pretty* heinous of unlikable characters, unnecessary and monstrous amounts of death to the point of near extinction and a few instances of anti-semitism (only a few). But thankfully, he's worked on other things like Eureka Seven: AO, Martian Successor Nadesico and Fullmetal Alchemist (But I prefer Brotherhood than the first anime adaptation). He's basically the Mark Miller of anime.

It wouldn't take much to turn the "Spreading the Evils of Silent Hill to the World" plot point into a decent idea: Have it be a ritual, or at least part of a ritual, to summon the Order's god. Harder to pull off than using a woman with special powers as an incubator, or even the 21 Sacraments (I'm pretty sure that was intended by the developers to be this alternate way to summon the demonic deity, at any rate - it would fit), but also harder to stop once it got going. This comic is stupid as hell, but teams and bands do tend to practice when they get stranded. It keeps them sharp in case they still manage get to whatever event they were headed for, and it helps keep morale up. Plus it beats sitting on their hands while they wait for help or the chance to send for help.

the order is not, or at least it shouldn't be, the cult's real name, just watch "The Real Silent Hill Experience" and you'll understand, other then that, yeah, you're right... too bad scott c enson(actually don't know how to spell that) was in charge, and ONLY if Team Silent were in charge would a game version be good, ever since Team Silent left, silent hill sucks... the start of the decline was origins, once again watch trshe for context

JTeenmining No, I won't watch TRSHE. TRSHE made some big-time oversights that undermine large parts of their analysis. They overlooked stuff like HARRY noting that the police report had been altered, Lisa's being controlled via her drug addiction (actually, they seem to have failed to read her diary altogether) and the Lisa the player meets in SH1 being a construct of Alessa's mind based on Alessa's perception of Lisa, one of Harry's notepads that Heather finds in SH3 saying outright that Dahlia burned Alessa on purpose, etc.

...when I think Silent Hill...the last thing that comes to mind is the Rolling Stones...*sigh* we're never going to get a good Silent Hill comic are we? And yes I know that a lot of people will bring up Sinner's Reward...but it was way too short, and I found it to have A LOT of similar problems as Ciencin's Silent Hill books, mostly in it's focus on action. Also the ending was incredibly predictable...at least to me.

I will agree that the cover of a trade does entice me far less than the name (and I trade wait). Like, I was really excited when I saw The Flash Volume 4 was called "Reverse", since the TV show had really drawn me in, and was hoping for some Eobard Thawne, but nah it was Daniel West. Oh well, I still liked it!

Longbox is its own entity, Linkara and the host(s) of longbox know about each other but there is no real overlap and Longbox tends to focus on good comics.

they are good, as is Anne's Story. I wish they'd do more without this guy involved, and like Anne's Story could pick a secondary character from the games to tell a story about ie we could get a story on how Cybil Bennett really got to silent hill and the detective from silent hill 3.

Except I don't think Silent Hill doesn't have a gun store. At most, you'd find a pistol, a shotgun, and maybe an SMG. Not an assault rifle owned by the Silent Hill SWAT Team.

@@gRinchY-op5vr I think the Lisa who wasn't supposed to peek was the one in the movie. You're right about the one in the game, since she was in charge of changing Alessa's bandages and the rule(?) from the movie didn't exist in the game.

(Sigh)...I don't like the Silent Hill reviews. Oh, not because I like the comics, not at all. Aside from only a few exceptions reviewed on Long Box of the Damned, most of the Silent Hill comics are absolute TRASH!!! Mostly it's because EVERY time I try to follow the "story" that's being recapped, I lose interest. Either because I can't tell what's going on due to the incompetent writing or just the awful, AWFUL characters throughout. Added to that, the artwork is probably the WORST EVER SHOWN on AT4W. Say what you will about ASBAR, Marville, or some of the terrible event comics out there, I least the artwork in them ranges from great, good, or decent. Now, none of this is Linkara's fault and to be fair, the ONLY reason I do stick around is because I like the storylines, he has going on around them. That being said, while Paint it Black may be the worst to him, I personally find all of the Scott Ciencin's Silent Hill comics to be on that same low level.
