@@olgagaming5544 Yes, there was another game, Destroyer Command, that allowed you to be an skipper in a destroyer -even to direct a flotilla. This game allowed multiplayer with Silent Hunter II, both belonged to the same studio. It was feasible to create a convoy, with human destroyers protecting it against submarines played by humans. There were mods in order to play with the Regia Marina Italiana, Imperial Japanese Navy, etc. As far as I know, up to 2020 there was people playing both games.

5 years later... I have theories! Maybe he wanted to fire cannon shells as well, not uncommon if there was reason to believe the target was un-escorted. Maybe he had to surface for air before making an attempt at escape, sneaking into a convoy submerged like that takes time and oxygen, and an escape trying to find thermostatic layers to hide in would take several hours more. Maybe he had to.. no wait that wouldnt happen. But since the enemy already knew where he was, maybe he wanted to surface so he could send a report (instead of doing so later and risk A) revealing his position to the enemy through triangulation and B) Convoy slipping through the net of uboats) as to approx how many ships the convoy consists of, so a wolfpack could be formed, before diving to evade.

They are portraying a typical uboat attack at the beginning of the war (before April 1941), just before the appearance of RADAR. The uboat is much faster while on the surface, and at night it is virtually invisible (its low profile and dark color make it difficult to see against the horizon). Once the attack begins, the convoy is forced to fire flares to negate the u-boot's invisibility. After that, the uboat's only chance of survival is to dive as fast and deep as it can. On the other hand, a night attack on the surface is more spectacular. And it emulates the convoy scene from Das Boot, the sacred cow of submarine warfare fans in WWII.
