*Fun Fact:* USS Salmon (SS-182) survived one of the wars most damaging depthcharge attacks and had a running gunfight with ASW ships on the surface. On 30 October 1944 during her eleventh war patrol, Salmon (SS-182) underwent a severe depth charge attack southeast of Kyushu while submerged at a depth of about 300 feet. As a result of this attack, Salmon incurred severe damage. This case of damage can be considered one of the most serious to have been survived by any U.S. submarine during World War II. Pressure hull deformation was extensive in way of both engine rooms. The external main engine air induction piping collapsed and flooded, causing the ship to become heavy overall, and the stern diving planes jammed in "full dive" position. Depth control was immediately lost and Salmon oscillated up and down several times, remaining submerged only by blowing the safety tank and by going ahead at emergency speed with a 20 degree up angle on the boat. Seventeen minutes after the attack, with batteries depleted, the after engine room flooded almost to the level of the main motors, and still not having achieved depth control, Salmon surfaced, outgunned the opposing Japanese escorts and escaped with three engines on full power. USS Salmon would never see another war patrol. She was broken up for scrap, and struck from the Navy Register on 11th Oct. 1945. Salmon earned nine battle stars for World War II service in the Asiatic-Pacific area.

Oh dear god, I just spent the last 45 minutes writing a witty and informed reply, not exactly to match that incredible story but funny in it's own way? I meant to clear an extra 'n', then all the script changed into red, then I probably hit 'delete' and all is gone. All I can say is 'remember Faslane' Commander (redacted) was pissing himself laughing showing me a photo of an upside down buoy still flashing under water, I just said, it must have been one of mine? I was happily on my way back from the Shetland Isles, hadn't seen my girlfriend for three weeks, hadn't been properly training for three weeks, happy to just fly into London and make my reports in a day or two but they diverted me to Faslane and one day got wasted while they were checking out the paddy? So in the meantime, I got acquainted with the problem, oh dearie dearie me, it wasn't good? A major fuck-up and what? I'm supposed to reassure the Royal Navy that we actually know what we are about when it is patently obvious that we don't? After a day waiting for 'clearence' I was granted an interview, led in by armed guards and just as he began to open his mouth I pointed at him and said 'hold on a minute, I didn't eff up that job, if I had seen them before they got sent I'd be going 'hang on, that doesn't look right?' He just started laughing, said 'ok, we wont launch you out of a torpedo tube today' Didn't rule out what might happen tomorrow?

The Mikura-class kaibokans (that's what your attacker was) were deadly for sure; two U.S. submarines were confirmed to have been sunk by ships of this class. However, U.S. submarines extracted their toll in return; of the eight ships completed, four were sunk by U.S. submarines, with a fifth lost to air attack. Of the three survivors, two were scrapped almost immediately after the war, but one (Yashiro) served with the Republic of China Navy until 1963. Also, you're up to 425,665 tons, only 28,052 tons away from breaking the all-time record. Keep up the great work, and looking forward to the next episode!

Fortunately, this Mikura class escort didn't appear to have radar yet. If this was 1944, that ship would have made a beeline for USS Salmon as soon as it surfaced.

In my game, whenever I go in and resupply, only my reload racks are filled up. I then select a fish and put it into the tube and all the empty "Ready Tubes" go into reloading. You can then select "Resupply" again and get your boat topped off with fish. Good Hunting!

Fantastic episode taff, great work on sinking those enemy merchants.. more enemy oil and various cargo wiped out and that's more well earned kills added to the tally and more enemy tonnage sent to the seabed. Close shave indeed with those IJN destroyers, and a deadly game of cat and mouse when coming under attack with the terror of depth charges, you have moments like that and you share the horrors and experiences of all submariners, makes you go cold don't it? Great work in getting away safely, the fog of war smiles on you, your boat and it's crew.. so you had some blessings indeed. Great episode, ace stuff.. keep it up and well done mate 👏 👍👍

The captain lost confidence, his voice became so quiet that I lost faith that USS Salmon would make it out alive. I was afraid this would be the last episode. Luckily, that didn't happen.

Great video. However, I found it interesting regarding the first ship you sunk that the two torpedoes impacted the ship very near the bow, but the ship sunk by the stern. Nonetheless, great video.

Heavy cruisers have redundant systems and are expected to be battered in battle and stay afloat. Heavy cruisers also tend to have torpedo defences. Passenger liners ... not so much. The Rawalpindi never stood a chance.

At this point in the war they are getting rid of the junk free torpedoes you should buy the new upgraded ones and you will have better results.

Looks like you’ll need to launch an acoustic at those destroyers before you dive to evade them. Seems to me that’s the only way to slip away from them safely.

9:22 I wonder if, since the ship was coming towards you at an angle, the method you used to measure speed was off a bit, since the apparent length of the ship is less than the actual length.

Is the angle of bow measurement based off the angle of the attack periscope? Just started playing and struggling to get hits consistently

as I understand, you have to chart the targets course and use the protractor to work out the angle based on your position. Taff seams to do it by eye, which throws off his aim a bit sometimes. That second torp miss was due to his angle of bow being off 10-15 deg on that shot I think.

@@rippervtol9516 yeah most the time I use the map to chart it out, but when you’re getting depth charged you really don’t have time to do that, you have to come up, fire, then dive back down rapidly

That killer that hunted you was DE, Escort Destroyer; and they aren't "destroyers" in that sense, cause they didn't have torpedoes and guns usually foun on DD's. DE are used to classify a ship that's used for a specific purpose, in this case ASW (anti submarine warfare), those used in Open ocean to escort a fleet. You were lucky to get away from that.

glitch in game program causes torp to not load in empty tubes at base reload/refuel ... you have to reload twice before you leave port to be sure to get full load out. not sure if this is a base game glitch or mod game like FoTRS

Just a little tip regarding depth charges on enemy ships...In SH3 they could run out of them (and sometimes even after few drops,simulating previous attacks the escort did),dont know if SH4 has limited ammo on escorts,probably has...

According to Wikipedia, the Mikura-class escort ship carries 120 depth charges. So, dropping 12 of them at a time, that ship could conduct no less than 10 separate attack runs before running out of ammunition!

Exactly. 90m is nothing. OK, at least for German WWII submarines ... Go twice that depth and we can start talking. The deeper you go, the further away does an ASW sonar have to be unless they can look straight down. (ASDIC could not, though later in the war they got better and better in looking downwards.) This gives you extra time to evade, unless they have at least 2 units, one watching you and one dropping onto you. The deeper you are, the more time between depth charges being lobbed and depth charges exploding around you. Giving you more time to evade. Actually, for a long period in the war the Japanese did not think the US subs could dive that deep and their depth charges could not even be set to the depths the US subs used. Then some politician who had a combat tour blabbed to the press how the depth charges all went up above them ... cue the Japanese changing their depth charges. That politician caused the loss of an estimated 10 submarines.

It may be historical, not only did the USA produce shit torpedoes that did not work but they did not produce a great amount of them, torpedoes are expencive even if they dont work they cost a lot of money and the american once didnt work and they were not produced in great numbers because they were expencive to make.

@@gotanon9659 The difference though is that the department of ordinance did not want to fix it, despite having never really tested it they would not believe it when the submarine captains said it didn't work, the story of the mark 14 torpedo is an incredible story about pride and incompetence.
