Power Matte is an easy to use interactive image matting tool that iteratively estimates the transparency value for every pixel in the image, based on a small sample of foreground (what you want to cut out) and background (what you want to get rid of) pixels marked by defining simple shapes on the image. Results show that compared with previous approaches, our method is more efficient and requires minimal effort to extract high-quality mattes for foregrounds with significant semi-transparent regions. In addition, the foreground edge colors can be estimated in the semi-transparent areas to create a seamless composite.

This was again a very interesting and useful video. Power Matte seems to work great on still images, as you showed here. I would be interested in the correct procedure, for the case with a moving shot. Is tracking several shapes the right way as with conventional rotoscoping? How to do it right to avoid flickering at the edges of the object? Is it possible with this technique (power matte) to rotoscope a moving object better and especially just as consistently as with conventional tracking data driven rotoscoping? Thanks again for the great content.

Thanks for the great question. Power Matte works well on some types of footage. Generally speaking it's used as part of a bigger approach, mixing Power Matte with traditional roto or other procedural techniques like luma keys etc. Finding a good balance between Deartifact and Sensitivity in the Node controls is usually the best place to start for temporal cohesion between frames. If your FG and BG colors are too close, there is a high risk of chatter though.

@@BorisFXco Thanks for answering the question! Try to consider this as a topic of another series of tutorials. Looks like you could get great results using Power Matte.

Thank you or these nice examples. The landscape power matte here - can this be used as a depth map also and to use this with a combination with a displacement map to make a 3d photo effect? Also, can the power matte be exported as a tiff/dng to use it as a depth map in Flame for example?

Yes, absolutely. Either combine with other elements, using Alpha to Color nodes, to create a simple RGB displacement map, or feed it into a Depth node and take advantage of the different depth conversion tools there. You can export it as RGB or Depth data with the Export node. I know that Ben did this type of workflow in one of his premium tutorials a while back. It might be an idea to revisit this idea in a new tutorial. I'll add it to our list.

Thank you very much, also for even replay to this question from my side. Very appreciated. I was trying to use an Alpha out of a PowerMatte into a Depth Node, but it was not working. I was also trying to combine it with a displacement node which was also not successful. But now I'll try the export node and will see.@@BorisFXco

After that powermatte as we can use roto shapes?
@BorisFXco
@BorisFXco Жыл бұрын
Yes. It's easy to mix roto and PowerMatte shapes. You can even copy/paste shapes between the different nodes as they use the same spline engine. Hope that helps.
