A sample clip from our NEW 15 minute Silica Dust Safety Training Video covering the 2016 OSHA Respirable Crystalline Silica Standard for employees. While silica has many valuable uses, it can also present a danger when workers are exposed to excessive amounts of crystalline silica dust. In fact, each year there are hundreds of deaths and thousands of illnesses attributed to harmful exposures to silica dust.
Crystalline silica is a naturally occurring substance used in a wide variety of industries and construction operations. It is also a common additive in food and pharmaceutical applications. While silica has many valuable uses, it can also present a danger when workers are exposed to excessive amounts of crystalline silica dust. In fact, each year there are hundreds of deaths and thousands of illnesses attributed to harmful exposures to silica dust. To prevent these types of harmful exposures, OSHA has developed regulations for general industry, maritime operations and the construction industry.
• Occupational Exposure to Respirable Crystalline Silica.
• OSHA Regulation 1910.1053 for General Industry and Maritime operations.
• OSHA Construction Regulation 1926.1153 for Construction Industry.
• How exposure to crystalline silica affects the human body.
• What requirements must be implemented by organizations under the OSHA silica standards.
• What engineering controls and work practice controls are used to limit exposure.
• Which types of respiratory protection provide protection from silica dust.
• What information can be found in Table 1 of the Construction Regulation.

I wish I would have known the dangers I went from a fast food job to my first carpenter job when I was 26 except the boss had us drilling into concrete and blowing out the holes with compressed air for what he called tie down rods I worked there for 3 years we didn't do it everyday but now at 35 I have scarring in my lungs and worry I will die from silicosis I never heard of it before and my life is destroyed my aniexty has me up all hours of the night. This is murder and should be criminally prosecuted.

Absolutely. Fuck shitty companies/contractors/bosses out to make a dime off other people’s well-being. It’s disgusting. You’re absolutely right- they’re criminals and should be reported!

@Future Corpse yeh would be slightly sceptical on that one. I’m very safe and wear my mask all the time on building sites. I’ve seen people exposed to levels you wouldn’t believe and they don’t care, been in a house with someone grinding bricks all day, no mask, no windows open. And they are fine, some been doing it for 40 years. Unless exposure is unbelievably high to doubt it in 3 years

I inhaled a little bit of grout and thinset dust from the bags the contractor left at my house after he completed the bathroom job. I was closing the bags and the dust went up in my face and I ended up getting some in my lungs. last night i was really tired and had shortness of breath. Should i be worried about long term health effects?

I don't think such short exposure is of big risk. Yesterday I cut a couple of pavers in my garage without protection and then wondered...what is all that fine dust actually about. So I ended up on this video realizing that I shouldn't have done what I did yesterday. Perhaps we will lose 0.01% of our lung capacity, but at least we are not professionals losing >0.01% every day.

Your lungs will repair themselves being that exposure was so small

Absolutely not, you would be amazed how much dust builders breath in on a daily basis and only a tiny proportion get ill. If it had dangers from short term exposure it would be dealt with in the same way as asbestos

The masks showed in this video are not even suitable for protecting against RSA, that bloke was literally grinding sandstone with the wrong mask 😷
