This is very cheap and economical. In the past year Iv work on some million dollar houses and needed to make some casts. One job i had to make a 200 mm by 500 mm corbel. The tube silicone rubber cost me 70$ for roughly 6.5 litres.!!!! To buy that in moulding silicone would have been 300$ plus!!!! The draw backs maybe the terrible vinegar smell which can also strip paint to. But haven't had a real problem yet. Thanks so much works a treat.

I can't believe I've been fannying around painting layer upon layer of latex on my molds when there's this method Thanks
@magnuswootton61812 жыл бұрын
i dont know they put it in the water first, may as well go straight in the mould. u do layer by layer for latex because it dries quicker.

Do you have a video of the finished product? Also does this shrink too much?
@snoopu26014 жыл бұрын
You can make something 3D you just put it in the middle of the ball when it dries the next day just to be safe when you cut your product out you don't want to cut a straight line try to cut a zig zag down one side to pop your product out. I've made a mold when we were bronze casting. I pour the cilaca wax into the mold to make many of one thing. Then keep dipping in the cilaca casting mix it took about a week the whole process it can be expensive because you have to leave the fan on for a week. Then we put the casting in a ceramic making oven the cast is ready to pour we bury the cast in sand then pour the multing bronze in the cast wait until it cools the brake the casting off the bronze it will capture every little detail even your finger prints if you leave them on the wax mold. I for got a few steps like the wax vents you have to attach to your mold so the air can escape you just cut them off with a saw or wire snippers depend on how thick the wax vents are .

Thanks for a great video - I seem to keep finding American kids making very expensive moods by mixing the silicone with cornstarch (called cornflour in UK), baby oil and acrylic paint (though I can't see the point of colouring a mold). I'm going to be making very small moods for doll shoes and this simple version seems perfect. The one thing I missed (maybe lost in the background noise) is how long to cure the silicone before removing from the original - does the silicone need to cure for the full 24 hours (as if it was being used as a waterproof sealant)?
@dannersmyers7 жыл бұрын
If you do it in multiple stages like this it is likely that the silicone mould will break apart where the different batches meet
@jerrywhidby52597 жыл бұрын
Danny M True, I did two batches right behind each other, and you can see a parting line. I was able to separate it a little, but did not try to. pull it apart completely.

So, im searching for a way to make a part out of silicone. What i need is essentially a toe spacer for bunions that i can wear in my shoes. I have many ive bought on amazon but none are wide enough. If i use this teqnique and form it in my foot the shape i need it then let it dry.. how stretchy is it? It needs to be very elastic as to be comfortable wearing all day

This is my experience when making the silicone caulk molds: When you are kneeding the silicone in the dish soap it traps air in it and in that air it traps water with soap that you are working with. Now the problem I had was that the mold made a cured skin on it but on the inside it was still not cured and it never cured because it had bubbles with soap and water traped in it. I found this out because I cut one mold with scissors and there was water coming out of the silicone.
@bigsouth7798 жыл бұрын
+WILD CHILD Did the water ever cure out of your molds? I was wondering about this myself because I'd like to make some candle molds.
@Chafalota8 жыл бұрын
No it didn't. After 3 weeks, Then I tore it up to see inside of the silicone and it had bubbles full of water. So The idea was good but the product itself is not designed for making molds. It would have been great to make them out of silicone calk because the mold kits are so expensive. I guess if you want to make a temporary mold it would work but then after a couple of weeks you would have to throw it out.
@bigsouth7798 жыл бұрын
Well that sucks doesn't it?
@Chafalota8 жыл бұрын

+Lynette McKone because you need the spaghetti like texture to help expose the surface to the cold water as much as possible to help start it setting up.
@abigailrae13657 жыл бұрын
No you don't. It's a much faster process when you CUT THE TUBE to release more of the silicone at once. 1. Easier to get out of tube. 2. Faster to get out of tube. 3. Same time spent Mixing in hands, (and actually even quicker since your working with "more" silicone). 4. Larger amounts of silicone in hand ='s bigger balls, ='s Less time spent Pumping the tube, applying the silicone to your project, and going back to repeat all the steps, over and over again. *Cut tube to the Bigger Section to release MORE Silicone at one time!*

What if u want to make a colored mold
@werefox618 жыл бұрын
2 questions. ! where did you say you buy it cheap? Can you add color to it and use it to sculpt with?
@Hellsong898 жыл бұрын
+Heidi Fox Home improvement/anything building related stores always has it, but getting it cheapest.. i think you could try search ebay or just give a call to importer, but be ready to buy lots in that case and i mean by the pallet loads. Adding color.. it comes in white, black, clear, but you can add paint to it, but it has to work with silicone. I'm guessing oil base paint could work? Using it as sculpting is no go. It flex way too much to be accurate and you really only can cut it. Using router tool or similar will just rip it. You could try to find suitable method, but no. Its cheaper and less trouble some, to make part from something like clay that you can sculpt and then use silicone only as mold. Also when your pouring silicone into water, take the tip off, so you trap less water into putty. Making strings like that just wastes silicone and makes it harder to handle. You really only need soap+water mix to prevent it sticking in your hands, bucket and to work peace. Actually you could try coating work peace with soap and then pouring in the silicone directly on the work peace, then spread it with soupy hands or some tool.

@magikdust20958 жыл бұрын
if you make this type of mould for casting resin, will the resin come out shiny?
@sm8706213458 жыл бұрын
+Magik Dust I know it's been a while since you asked, but to answer your question, most likely not. While this method will work in a pinch, it's really not an ideal molding technique. Most proper molding materials will pick up the finest details (including that fingerprint you didn't notice)and reproduce the same finish as what the original piece had. Most molding silicones are pourable, or at least brushable, to pick up detail. This is basically like sticking clay to something and expecting a perfect copy, It's just not going to happen in most cases.

@T1iCanon7 жыл бұрын
How did it go ? I hope you didnt use sanitary one :D they stink like hell :D
@happyorangeanimation7 жыл бұрын
There were a few bits of the mould that had thin walls (less than 0.5mm thick) that I had to squeeze very big parts through in order to get the hard sugar out of the mould. After a couple of casts these thin silicone films ripped open a little but I think that was down to the shape of the mould and lack of release spray rather than the silicone itself having bad reaction to the heat. The sugar was liquid and between 180 and 190C and otherwise has left the shape of the moulds unchanged :D
