"The first time I ever really listened to Kyle Kulinski’s show was in the back of a cab last summer. The driver had his phone hooked up through the stereo and was pumping out an episode through the car speakers - loudly, as if looking to convert a captive audience.
“Do you like Kyle Kulinski?”
The driver, Ahmed, was a recent immigrant and apparently a die-hard fan of Secular Talk, the political talk show that Kulinski broadcasts on KZfaq. I told him, yes, in fact. I do like Kulinski, had come across his show several years ago, and, all things considered, he seemed pretty good.
“He understands what we’re up against,” Ahmed said. “Like Bernie.”
But I was surprised to hear Kulinski’s name mentioned in the same breath as Bernie Sanders, particularly with such adoration. Because what I did remember about Kulinski’s show struck me as mostly capital-P “progressive” takes on the news - the left wing of the Netroots crowd more than the democratic socialism Sanders has popularized.
It’s an impression that wasn’t entirely incorrect.
“I have no time for philosophical, airy bullshit,” Kulinski tells me from his home in Westchester, New York. “I don’t want to hear about Lenin. I don’t want to hear about Marx. I just want a super plainspoken, straightforward agenda with a straightforward way of selling it.”
With over 800,000 subscribers and nearly 670 million total views on KZfaq, selling a progressive agenda is clearly something Kulinski knows how to do - even Democracy Now, the long-standing flagship of progressive media, cannot match his reach on the platform. Chapo Trap House can certainly boast a wildly devoted fan base (and a not insignificant degree of media influence), but their audience is roughly half the size of Kulinski’s.
While Secular Talk might be more likely to be looped in with the progressive networks around Air America and Pacifica alums like Sam Seder than the more resolutely socialist world, Kulinski’s fiery rhetoric, razor-sharp class instincts, and knack for withering takedowns sets him apart from his peers. Judging by his rhetoric alone, he’s closer to a Eugene Debs than a Chris Hayes.
But unlike Hayes, Amy Goodman, or his friend Cenk Uygur of The Young Turks - who began airing Secular Talk on his web network seven years ago - the thirty-two-year-old Kulinski is virtually invisible in the mainstream media. Despite his enormous fan base, his show has never once been mentioned in the obligatory trend pieces on “the Millennial Left” pumped out by the prestige media. Nor has Kulinski’s name ever popped up at all in the New York Times, Vox, the New Yorker, New York Magazine, or the Washington Post, despite his leading role in cofounding Justice Democrats, the organization widely credited with sweeping Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and the rest of “the Squad” to power.
Just last week, his Wikipedia page was deleted. The reason? “There is very simply no [reliable source] coverage of this person,” according to one moderator. In new media, he’s king - the Sean Hannity of the Berniecrat left. In old media, he’s nobody.
I suspect there are a few reasons for that. There is nothing “cool” about Kulinski’s show. (As a friend put it, “‘Welcome to Secular Talk’ sounds like something you’d hear on Egyptian radio.”) His no-nonsense social-democratic politics won’t get him much cred with the Full Communism crowd. He records his show not in Brooklyn or Los Angeles, but in a studio he built himself in his modest Westchester home. His hair is too groomed and his taste in clothes too preppy to qualify as “Dirtbag Left.” Nor has he ever attended an n+1 release party. “Not only have I not attended one,” he says, “I have no idea what that means.”
And yet he’s astonishingly plugged-in for a young man in the suburbs. Wondering how Sanders ended up on the Joe Rogan Experience? Kulinski, a frequent guest on Rogan’s wildly popular show, introduced them. “You make the most sense to me,” Rogan told Kulinski on a recent episode. “You’re a normal person.”
Much like Sanders himself, Kulinski’s show has a massive audience that just doesn’t compute with our media’s understanding of “what the kids want” or even “what the left-wing kids want.”
It’s probably for the best - the very woke and very WASP-ish decorum haunting much of the media world is nowhere to be found in Secular Talk. “Corporate Democrats over-focus on identity as a trick to divert you from the issues that unite us all - class issues,” he said on a recent episode.

The only way Ben Shapiro isn't a neoconservative is in that he is often far more socially conservative than a lot of neoconservatives. Otherwise, there's no daylight between his "hawkish realism" and neoconservative foreign policy. And there's nothing "libertarian" about it either.

Kyle is wrong in saying Ben doesn't favor Israel over the US. Ben most certainly does favor Israel over the US in that US support for Israel, which is coerced by the Israel lobby, ultimately is highly detrimental to the US, economically (because of the billions of dollars it gives to Israel to support the illegal occupation and wars) and diplomatically as countries all over the world see the US as complicit in historical crimes committed by Israel. The pro Israeli policies also endanger US citizens as militant groups all over the world see US citizens as targets in the war against the US and Israel. If Ben Shapiro is supporting these policies that do damage to the US economically, diplomatically ect., he is literally siding with Israel over the US. Kyle's trying here I guess, but his reasoning is lazy.
@Ioganstone
@Ioganstone 6 ай бұрын
I've been hearing this argument more and more, as people realize economies are tied to culture. But even you are blinkered. Imagine for a moment the US was not arming Israel, the Israel blockade blocks Gazans from shipping anything of their own. So because Gaza can't use its ports in the first place, and because otherwise its landlocked, freedom of the seas isn't affected. So if we going to make the freedom of the seas argument, we'd be making it for the first time for the Gazans today, and because as Ben would say "The US doesn't have a very strong interest in their freedom of the seas [because they aren't allowed to]". The buried lead in this whole convo is that by blocking Israel, you are only blocking Israel not Gaza. Long term interests of the US would be benefitted from real freedom of the seas.

1:37 I can’t take this argument seriously from Kyle as this isn’t a consistent stance he takes, if you cared so much you would be in outrage about Yemen, Syria, Venezuela constantly. The real answer is that we focus on this conflict overseas because we play a direct role in carrying it out, diplomatically shielding Israel, and that AIPAC has a stranglehold on our domestic politics. Not saying that it shouldn’t be focused on, just call a spade a spade. Tucker’s point I believe is valid because if we didn’t focus so much on foreign policy in the Middle East, we wouldn’t be financially supporting Israel and they wouldn’t have the capacity to carry out such atrocities. If we remained focused on our own people, we wouldn’t be toppling governments across the world and propping up Israel to help us do so.

@@yasmeenmomani1743 Yeah and I've also seen the secular talk comment section, which has unfortunately in recent years became more and more filled with one-sided partisanship. More and more echo chambers are forming on the internet, and it is not good. I'd absolutely state that the average secular talk listener is much less misguided than the average sky news listener, but to be honest the way the community has become less questioning of any and all leftist narratives over the recent years has been concerning. I'd suggest to all listeners who are of this ilk to always being critical of all information presented to you regardless of the source, while also giving the benefit of the doubt on ethical issues, if everyone did so we could go back to the rational discourse that used to be the norm in the secular talk comment section of the past. Of course, it is not clear to which degree bots are to blame for all of this, as is the case on all channels, subreddits, and social media etc.

“They want to destroy America “ - I have heard that from conservatives so many times. But it’s said by some liberals about conservatives as well. In both cases it’s not true- hell even Trump actually believes that the country will be destroyed without him. He thinks he will save America. Neither side wants to destroy America; they just have different views on what’s best for America and what’s destructive for America

Here is a thought I had for a while now. Why doesn’t Kyle invite his old buddy Destiny to debate him and his wife about Israel/Palestine and other things. So they can actually be challenged on what should be done in this conflict and the path moving forward. I about done with this passive aggressive about America and appeals to emotion without giving a real solution.
