I am a young sailor, my story is sad,
Though once I was carefree and a brave sailor lad,
I courted a lassie by night and by day,
Oh but now she has left me,
And sailed far away.
Oh, if I was a blackbird could whistle and sing,
I'd follow the vessel my true love sails in,
And in the top riggin' I would there build my next,
And I'd flutter my wings o'er her lilly white breast.
Or if I was a scholar and could handle the pen
Once secret love letter to my true love I'd send
And tell of my sorrow, my grief and my pain
Since she's gone and left me
In yon flowery glen.
I sailed o'er the ocean, my fortune to seek
Though I missed her caress and her kiss on my cheek
I returned and I told her my love was still warm
but she turned away lightly
And great was her scorn.
I offered to take her to Donnybrook Fair
And to buy her fine ribbons to tie up her hair
I offered to marry and to stay by her side
But she says in the morning
She sails with the tide.
My parents, they chide me, oh they will not agree
Saying that me and my false love, married should never be
Oh let them deprive me, or let them do what they will
While there's breath in my body
She's the one I love still

No matter how often I hear that voice (and I've been hearing it for thirty years now), it's like the Scottish ground itself were singing.

This song is Irish in origin, collected in the 1920s by Colm O Lochlainn in Dublin (Donny Brook is in South Dublin),and recorded by Delia Murphy* in 1939. Was very popular in the early 1950s, the Silly Wizard version is my favourite, has a languid simplicity. The 1950's versions were often over orchestrated. *Delia Murphy was a fascinating character, wife of an Irisj Ambassador, recording star and did some undercover work in Germany during the war.. has to be a film in there somewhere.

In the book Irish Street Ballads by Colm O Lochlainn Copyright 1939 there is a song called 'If I Was A Blackbird" with near identical lyrics; I am a young maiden my story is sad For once I was courted by a brave sailor lad. He courted me strongly by night and by day, But now my dear sailor is gone far away. (Chorus) If I was a black bird, I'd whistle and sing And I'd follow the ship that my true love sails in And on the top riggings I'd there build my nest, And I'd pillow my head on his lily white breast. He promised to take me to Donnybrook fair To buy me red ribbons to bind up my hair. And when he'd return from the ocean so wide, He'd take me and make me his own loving bride. (Chorus) His parents they slight me and will not agree That I and my sailor boy married should be. But when he comes home I will greet him with joy And I'll take to my bosom my dear sailor boy (Chorus) In my opinion based off of what I read this is an Irish ballad. Also it makes more sense than Silly Wizards lyrics. Why would a sailor lads lassy sail away? it would make more sense if it was the bride to be singing that she wanted to follow her sailor lad on his travels. As well the quoting of Donnybrook Fair, in my opinion it makes no sense for someone in Scotland to sail all the way to Dublin to buy red ribbons. I would suggest listening to Delia Murphy's version but the she is still not the original as the song is far older.

Don't worry we sing each others songs and songs from all over, you'll find Scots songs to irish tunes and vice vesra. Sometimes the words are changed to echo the life of the singer or audience. @snarlacarla You talk as if you know the man. More likely you, like countless others, get your knowledge from those ever so accurate and unbiased journalists who wouldn't know the truth if it smacked them full in the face. You should take your bellyaching and belicose nonsense to some other forum....and leave the rest of us to enjoy this music.

@heehawluck1 Say what you wish of Gibson's nature, but this much is true; he butchered Scottish history in his gratingly incorect rendition of William Wallace's life. @theceltichobbit Thanks for posting the song and the lyrics! I would, however, recommend that you change the bkgrnd pic. :)

Change the poster. If you believe Mel Gibson's version of "history", I've got some sub-prime debts I'd like to sell you.
