Silo filling is a very different type of load on a steam engine. The entire bundle of corn stalks is fed into the cutter, including the ears. Cutting the stalks is much easier than cutting through the ears, thus the engine governor gets a continuous workout as each ear reaches the cutting blades, or several ears hit at once. The engine "talks".
The engine is a 23-90 Baker Uniflow, a powerful engine that can easily handle the load, even when the cutter is loaded much more than seen here.
Most of the horses are Belgians, which have a calm temperament well suited to working next to a hammering steam engine and a roaring silage cutter.
As usual, this is a rotating community work party, with neighbors bringing their own wagons and teams, and the farm owner providing a noon meal. This group had already filled many other silos.
Our thanks for the hospitality of the engine owner, farm owner, and all involved, and for the excellent meal.

Wow now you are taking me away back to the 1940's as a young lad. My job was in the silo tramping the corn down walking round and round while a man with me was steering the fill pipe to fill it in. It was great when you got to the top and could look all around, then the long final climb down.

I will need to ask about this. They inject water into the cutter, and this is a pretty big silo, so I don't know if they need anybody inside.
@SteamCrane

The owner of the engine filled me in. They haven't tramped a silo around here in many years. They figured out that the weight of the corn above compresses the corn sufficiently. They don't use a fill pipe any more, as they now have a commercially made distributor at the top of the silo. Between wagon loads, you can see a guy moving a lever at the base of the silo. That is moving the distributor to a different position. The engine owner also owns the cutter. He added a shredder to the cutter, to cut the silage much finer. What they had found was that with a regular cutting blade, the corn ears were cut into slices like coins. They would then slide down the conical pile to the outer edge of the silo, so you had green silage in the center, and a rim of corn slices around the outside walls. The shredder gives a well mixed fill all across the silo. The water addition is because the farm owner had a commitment the previous week, when moisture content was perfect. The guy at the top is only there when the silo is almost full. He uses a large rake to level out the load, and signals how many more wagon loads are needed to complete the filling.

Wow... really interesting! What is the chopper? Does it have a special pulley so that it is running at proper rpms? I am supposing the rpms of the steam engine are fixed. And, the size of the flywheel is fixed. It certainly provides consistent power to run the chopper. Long ago, I helped fill silos this way, sans the horses and steam power -- tractors pulling wagons, tractor driving the chopper. We had a Case chopper, flatbed, such as this one. Seeing the packer rollers rise and fall brings back vivid pictures of watching it work. Ours had large springs that held downward force on the rollers, ... large one in the front (four paddles, if I recall), then smaller one as the second roller, holding the material tight against the cutter bar. We also drove the chopper with a twisted belt, a long one, such as used here. That chopper is really eating through the material! What about the water? Is it being added into the chopper at the cut station, so that the forage blown to the top is dampened? One close shot shows water leaking from the chopper -- supposing that is because of the added water, not from the corn forage itself. One comment below about tromping in the silo - yes we did that. That was a horrible job. We had a large funnel at the top, with drop sections of pipe (12" diameter?), about four feet long. They hung from the funnel, that was attached to the goose neck at the top. When starting, these sections reached near the bottom. The end section had a rope, so that the person inside could swing the pipe, thus directing the placement of the silage near the edges to keep the filling level even across the silo. As the silo filled, sections were taken off, lowered through the chute. Our silo was 12X36, big for our time and location. Seeing the four corn binders I assume the corn was abound, then shocked, and then picked up by these wagons. Were the people on the wagons the only ones loading, or was there people in the field helping to load the wagons. There seem to be four or five wagons, cycling pretty quickly. Loading from shocks must have gone quick. Thanks for posting.

The pulley on the cutter is much smaller than the engine flywheel, to get the RPMs up to where they need to be. There is a standard for belt speed, just as there is for PTO RPM. The engine owner said that in this area, they had stopped tamping silos long ago. These silos all have a movable distributor at the top, and they concluded that tamping didn't buy you much. This cutter has a shredder blade instead of a plain cutter blade. The normal cutter leaves the corn ears in slices like thick coins, which tend to slide out to the outside edge of the silo. The shredder gets the silage mixed better. The water addition is because the owner was unable to fill a week earlier, when the moisture content was perfect.

The silage would produce a poisonous gas for about a week after filling the silo. Always had to keep the silo filling blower running anytime we had to go into the silo for the first few days. We lost a few farmers due to the gas. Killed a lot of cats, and mice in the silo room. For me, I got a couple of real good headaches from the gas.

The engine owner confirmed this. The rule of thumb is 10 days. If they need to work in the silo before that, run the chopper. He also talked about spreading plastic a bit below the top of the silage to prevent rot.

Very probable that the tires are airless, and the tractor has a mechanically injected diesel, thus no electricity while in operation.

Damn, a 7” pipe shoved in the standard 9” blower pipe you got to lose some lift going into the silo. There’s a tractor in the background, just seems like you’re picking an choosing what technology you’ll use...
@SteamCrane
@SteamCrane 5 жыл бұрын
Each group has a specific set of rules for what is allowed. In many communities, a diesel tractor is allowed, since it doesn't have electricity for ignition, but a gas tractor isn't. The electric starter is OK, as it is used briefly. In many cases, a tractor can be used for belt work, but not field work. Also, the tires are either filled or have airless tires. The wiki article has a table of allowed technology per group, but it doesn't mention the diesel vs gas and airless tire rules.

The corn is not removed, it is chopped up with the stalks. The silage is a mix of corn ears and stalk. This chopper has a shredder, so that the silage is mixed better. Cows are vegetarians, but they do get a balanced diet.
