In this video, I work on one of my silver birch trees. I make some hard decisions in terms of changing the direction of the tree to hopefully create a better bonsai for the future.

That cut was perfect. I was nervously watching wondering which leader you would keep. I think you made the right choice, the tree looks amazing! Thank you for sharing!

Cheers Matt. I generally favour movement and taper over trunk thickness, and I'm really happy with how this tree is now looking.

Yep exactly the right decision removing the thicker trunk. The movement in the trunk now will produce a great bonsai in a few tears mate.

A bold decision Tony but I agree with you that something didn't look right with the tree as a twin-trunk. You can really see the movement in the trunk you chose to keep. I like it. 👍👍

Resulting tree is really nice. It will be interesting to watch it develop. I probably would have air layered the other trunk as it was so thick. Silver birch are a bit hard to come by in Idaho and don't do very well because of birch borers. Instead we make do with river birch that are more resistant. Good work! Always appreciate your willingness to pursue new approaches.
@TonysBonsai
@TonysBonsai Жыл бұрын
Thank you, I am really pleased with how this ended up. We have loads of silver birch knocking around, and with the lack of taper and the big scars on the trunk I didn't fancy air layering it. Come to think of it, I don't recall seeing anyone air later a birch. I wonder ifthey are a good tree to use that technique on?

My own “twin trunk birch” is still in what I refer to as my “growing bed” which is actually a tiny plot 1m x 1m with a couple of trees ground planted in it, over paving slabs, for a couple of years to grow and thicken up. One trunk is growing straight up and is fully straight and featureless. The other grew out sideways with a terrific twist in it. I wonder if I should chop one off in future, and which one? 🤔😆😆
@TonysBonsai
@TonysBonsai Жыл бұрын
Sounds like nature is guiding you there mate. Should be a cracking tree, and being planted on the slab those roots should be pretty tasty too. Also, I just emailed you.

Nice cut Tony, definitely a good decision to leave that single trunk with great shape to it. Your setting up some really nice quality tree's to work on further next year.
