Another great character actor is Morris Ankrum starting in 1933 he was in over 300 movies and tv ,western bad guy. Sifi, judge, he could play any role and countless TV role's never lacked for work as he like Buchanan knew everyone in the business.

This western kind of sneaks up on you if you stay with it. An independent production made on a shoestring, it has a strong ensemble of very good character actors. Edgar Buchanan, Marie Windsor, Morris Ankrum, Barton MacLane, and Lon Chaney Jr, raise this film above the average "B" movie duster. In fact, in some aspects it seems more realistic and authentic then some "A" movie westerns. The film "High Noon" was made in 1952 and you can see it's strong influence on this movie which was released in 1955. Ian MacDonald, who co-wrote this film, had a supporting role in "High Noon" as one of protagonists to Gary Cooper's Marshal Will Kane character. Overall this is a decent oater and worth watching. Really a Good One! Just simple. Not Easy. But Plain and Simple. Fine Cast! I bet they all donated their Salary to the production. The Star, Earle Lyon, was the Producer.

A "B" oater; a cast of character actors, a plot following HIGH NOON, and a genre western format, as an "indie" from the 1950s. No costume changes, no horses falling, This was what I grew up watching. Saturday afternoons at the Ritz, watching the "B" cowboy stars and then a more modern western later.

Agreeable oater, it allows some of the great character players, like Buchanan, Chaney, and Barton MacLaine, a chance to shine--and there's Marie Windsor, usually associated with some very fine noir films of the decade. ***

I do not know if I have ever seen Edgar Buchanan with top billing. He and the song were the stars of this movie. But didn't these guys know what a rifle was...lol? And you never know when Lon Chaney, Jr. will show up in a movie. I was a kid in the 1950's and I remember riding my Western Flyer bicycle to the local theater and watching Lon Chaney as the Werewolf and then as The Hunchback of Notre Dame. I think that he always gave a good performance, no matter what role he played.

MARIE WINDSOR, usually the treacherous fly in the ointment, plays an against type part here as the goody two shoes girlfriend of young sheriff Earle Lyon, who cannot shoot straight enough to hit an elephant. Good B Western despite minor flaws

Very slow. If the sheriff had gone down to the saloon with a double barrel shotgun, he would have sorted out those guys in jig time. But then the film would have shorter lol

The climax to this movie is a little different in the director's cut... The sheriff's girlfriend was willing to blow him off if he wasn't going to confront the bad guys. Of course, the sheriff prevails. With a big stupid grin on her face the sheriffs girlfriend runs up to him all happy and now willing to bear his children. But the sheriff realizes that she is a manipulative, gold digging nag whose love is conditional and he dropped kicks her into the next county... "No soup for you!"

I see that Morris Ankrum plays a character in this movie. What is this, a science fiction western?

I would've hated all that singin' had this been a Saturday matinee when I was a kid. Hardly any ridin', all talk and no shootin' 'til the last ten minutes! And whoever drinks Bristol Cream sherry in a Western? Hold yer horses, did product placement pay for the whole dern flick? But it had some nice cinematography and some great actors. And busting a crooked lawyer is a rare decency that only a grownup can appreciate.

Neither Karen, or the town, deserved the sheriff.

Unusual to see the horses tailed docked on a western show. It looks like they are groomed for show.

The horse was by far the best actor. I'd say a D movie at best

In the opening scene we are witness to the horrible case of dandruff that the fellow has....yet he seems to be on track with the gal there.

i wouldnt marry that lady for all the tea in china. this is probably a lot more realistic than most westerns, where one guy shoots all the bad men !! he was correct. in that sort of town scenario, like most of the wild west probably was, it takes a lot more than one guy to keep the peace. which also means some women willing to sacrifice their lives.

Wow, since when does a Sheriff shoot a man for wearing his gun on his own property? This Sheriff would have been removed by the first judge to hear this case! Must be a democrat created film.

Aside from Edgar Buchanan, most annoying movie I've ever watched.

i've been on the binge watch again for old westerns in the last few weeks. If I wasn't so hungover I would and should have stopped this one. One if not the, worst western movie I have watched. Slow, a boring story line, and a very anti climatic if not cowardly ending. 4/10.

First impression: the Sheriff violated the 1st, 4th and 5th Amendments. He had no warrant, no probable cause, and he attacked the rancher's right to bear arms. The rancher was under no obligation to even speak to him. Plus, he is the double-minded man, unstable in all his ways.

Strictly second rate. The sheriff is horrible. If I hear that song again, I'll snap.

What a terrible film, the acting of the leading man was awful, the script even worse. The adverts were more interesting than the film.😭

One of the worst movies I've ever seen. The editing was atrocious. From the opening with the old sheriff's legs switching from one side of the porch post to the other to the old sheriff pointing to the town right outside his house when it was apparent that he and his wife lived outside of town. The running gun battle where the old sheriff should have easily seen King moving down the middle of the street and sidewalk toward the new sheriff where he had a very clean shot at him. These are just a couple of examples of the dozens of editing mistakes. Just all around bad editing. I watched the whole thing trying to ignore the disaster of an editing job but I guess I just couldn't and so I had to vent here after wasting 1 hour and 13 minutes and 19 seconds of my life.

What a coward fellow was literally forced to be the Sherrif😂
