I think one advantage the August has is that it has the sensor built in that detects when the door is open. I get in an apartment building it likely would have issues with geofencing as the app would struggle with GPS location and I think the Level, being bluetooth only, does get less interference. The August, having both bluetooth and WiFi tends to sometimes drop the bluetooth, which can affect the unlocking as well. What I really like about August is it integrates into a lot more automation systems, where as Level is pretty well stuck to home kit only.

Hi ! Love love all the vids you have got inspired to turn my home into a smart one. I had gotten the level lock plus but I been running into some issues for some reason after the kids had locked it in a few seconds it would unlock on its own I have about four of them having same issues. Also how can share the home key with my hubby it kept on saying no accessory found. Hopefully you can help solve this issue. Thanks in advance!!!

Thanks for the videos! Do you know if either lock will log when someone comes in using the conventional metal key? Also the August lock has the door sensor so that might be one advantage? Finally looking for some recommendations of good deadbolts that will work with either one. Other certain deadbolts that will not work?

Thanks! Both will notify you when the door is manually unlocked, but only the August will show it in the log. Yes, that is an advantage to the August, but only if you have a problem with your door getting left ajar. Pretty much any deadbolt will work with both locks. When I’m adding a deadbolt for one of our customers, I always use Schlage deadbolts.

Recently purchased an August wifi smart lock. Wish I would have seen your review before. The auto unlock is so glitchy in apartments. I had to download tasker and sharptools to get it to function correctly. Also added a NFC sticker outside the door so I could trigger it with my phone easily when it's auto open isn't working correctly. Do you miss the door open and closed recognition of the August or is that something the level bolt has as well?

You’re right about being glitchy in apartments. I’m impressed by your techniques to get around that though..I actually moved since that video & The Level Lock didn’t fit in my new door, so I’m back to The August. Just ordered the Schlage Encode Plus (with Apple Home Key). I’ll be trying that out once I get it.

My August Pro (3rd Gen) saved me one day. I forgot my phone and house keys. Turned on my car, and left my house and realized half way I didn’t have my phone. Came back, house was locked because of an automation. I was freaking out and then noticed my car radio connected to my phone via Bluetooth!!!! Tried to use Siri to unlock my door AND BOOM it worked! I was so relieved!

Thanks for your great video. How secure do you think the actual locking bolt is, since it is hollow with a battery inside of it, instead of solid steel? Would a good shoulder or kick open it more easily than a “dumb” lock. That’s my only concern.

@SilverHammer Yes, sorry I wasn’t specific. For the Level Lock (or Bolt) that both use batteries inside the core of the locking bolt. That was my only worry, as it seems slightly more pliable than a solid steel bolt. However, I trust your judgement! Thanks again for the video!

Yeah, the entire Level lock is very substantial and that bolt is still very well made despite the battery situation.

The Kwikset smart deadbolt lock is loud when it's activated. How loud is Level Lock when it's working?

Not very loud at all. You can’t really hear the actual lock. You can only hear the chime it makes when activated.

I have the August lock the 3rd or 4th gen and I like it but I don't like how much it disconnects from Wi-Fi and I kind of wish I got the Z-Wave one so that way if the Wi-Fi goes down it could still use the Z-Wave.

It’s been a couple years since I’ve used August. Mostly for the same reason. I would have hoped they had fixed some of those issues with firmware updates…but apparently not.

I see the level smart lock has a bluetooth range of 10 feet. Do you think a bluetooth extender of a 100feet will work and if so which do you recommend?

It does not. There currently are no locks that do, but The Schlage Encode Plus looks to be the first one & its coming soon.

Switching the battery on The Level Lock is very easy. You just unscrew the lock cap. Takes about 10 seconds. As far as battery life, I haven’t had it that long, so we’ll see. But I haven’t had to replace it yet. The August Wi-Fi lock went through batteries very quickly.

I searched that video of your home tour over and over and I cannot see the orbi link of the version you had did you get the one with the docsis modem inside it or just the satellite version and have you talked about why you chose the eco bee over the Nest thermostat even though you have the bridge that allows your google devices to work with HomeKit

Hmmmm. I’ll check my description. I swear the ORBI link was there. I didn’t mention that, but I like The ecobee because of the way the sensors average out the temperature. Because of the large windows in this apartment, I need an average. Nest doesn’t do that. The older Nest thermostat has sensors & you can change the temp based on different rooms, but it doesn’t do average temps. The new “Google Nest” thermostat isn’t even compatible with the sensors. For me, the sensors are a big deal.

Another thing I want to know from your viewpoint is any issues so far with the August Smart Lock? The reason I am wanting to ask this is I am iffy on it for I am hearing about it is some people are not really enjoying it and some are when I looked around the net.

I’ve been using the August since it came out. I briefly switched to The Level Lock when I did this video, but had to switch back to August when I moved. I wouldn’t keep going back to August if I had problems with it. It’s a great lock.

Lot of people saying they don’t trust the Level Locks strength. News flash, the wood surrounding your door will shatter to pieces before the Lock fails if someone kicks the door. Not too many homes have steel frames.

Well that definitely shouldn’t happen. I’d need to know how you have it configured to help solve that problem. Have you contacted Level about this? They are usually very helpful.

By the way, what’s your opinion about Level putting out the new Touch lock with HomeKey compatibility, but not offering a firmware update to owners of the previous model. I just bought mine back in January and feel a bit slighted that they’re selling what looks like the same lock but with added functionality. At least Tesla updates older models with the same new updates going into newer models.

I’m holding out hope that they will do a firmware update for existing customers. But if not, I guess we have to look at it like any other tech device. They are always going to add that one feature that makes you buy the new one. My biggest problem is their price. They seem pretty proud of it compared to the Schlage Encode Plus. But it’s working for them, they are selling out like crazy.

That’s a good question. I should have mentioned that… That’s one more small complaint about The August. I only got about two months out of the battery. I can’t say about The Level yet, but they claim it should last a year. We’ll see.

Which one? The Level Lock? Does your gate have a deadbolt? Both of these are made to be used with a standard deadbolt.

Their newer WiFi lock uses 3v CR123a batteries. I get approx 2 months on average.

reach out to August support! they provided me with a free August bridge and that solved my problem with battery life and connectivity.

@@xoulsinz I did. A number of times. I removed it from wifi. Eats batteries because it searches between wifi and bluetooth. Has been fine working solely on bluetooth via Apple Home app

It is very easy to install and it works very well, with a clear picture through the app and good in-home use (we added the chime, which is also easy to install and doesn't require another thought to use).

I also run a full time business & again, if you watched any of my newer videos, you’d know I’m going through a pretty intense cancer battle. Yeah, you’ve obviously only watched one of my videos. That’s the only video I used that intro. Nice that you had to ruin a compliment (I think it was a compliment?) by nitpicking something so small and irrelevant. I guess I should run all my intros by you before I use them. 🙄

I 100% disagree. It was a great lock for me and I’ve loved August since their first lock was released.
