We had soooo many frogs that the noise got unbearable at night and i worried the neighbors would start shooting at the pool lol. I’m working on the swamp now. Got it from a very dark green to very light green but definitely can’t see the bottom. Last year it took me months because I thought I could ignore the high ph until after the algae was gone. I then went through 3 gallons of muriatic acid and hundreds of $ of liquid shock.

Sorry for the late response to your comment. Have you been able to clear it up? Often it stays green because not enough shock is used. Sometimes you have to shock the daylights out of it but then you have to wait for the chlorine levels to go down before swimming. Also caution you don’t kill vegetation when backwashing. Take care 😊

We had to use 3 bags of shock and leave the pump and filter running 24/7 for 5 or 6 days. We had to add a metric shit ton of clarifier when it was blue and backwash the filter 3 times a day to make it clear again

Simple, 12lbs of shock homie, and run the pump 24/7

@@brianbirtcher431 pool company will tell you that but the moment you add anything to pool after 1st ph balancing it will throw ph outta balance . 1st clean your pool and shock it then algaecide .., test add whatever you may need.

In our area with the ice, wind and snow all winter we have had cover failures. We are going to give it a shot again this year! Wish us luck!! If it fails, we can always use the extra chlorine again as a backup! 🏊🏼‍♂️

But liners were on back order. We purposely did not use a pool cover. There are earlier comments with threads addressing pool covers. I’ll cut and paste my initial response to pool cover suggestions here….. In theory that’s a great idea and for many it’s an option that works out well. I can tell you from our experiences over the decades, easier said than done. Our winters and springs can be horrendous with wind, snow, ice and rain. We have had failures with pool covers in times past. When factoring in the cost to purchase a cover for our large pool; it’s really a coin toss on how worth while it is. Also, there can be periodic maintenance removing water & debris from the top of the pool cover. Maybe we’ll try one again down the road. But for now our bias is towards not using a cover. Great question! If You can use a cover and get it to work it’s advantageous! Because by covering your pool, every winter, you decrease the amount of time that the UV light from the sun is beating down on your liner. This will help to increase the lifespan of your liner and help to decrease fading. Here in Wisconsin due to snow, ice and wind we have had too many fails with the liner so we just gave up on it over time. We had our new liner installed last Wednesday and we just released a video on our pool liner install. It’s not a how to, but it will give you a good vibe of what it’s like to get a liner installed and during the installation I voiceover why we don’t use a pool cover and and also why we don’t put a lot of chemicals into our pool. So the video will help give some pros and cons. We don’t cover the pool with pool covers anymore because they usually blow off or break or fill with dirty leaf infested water that usually gets into the pool. So basically it’s attaching the hoses and firing everything up to see if working properly 😊

Good question! If you have build up on the walls, yes. We didn’t have an issue with it and once it warms up we swim regularly , so it’s the best protection against the algae building in the walls. Happy swimming! 🏊🏼‍♂️

Thanks. Great questions. And Yes there will be a part 2 video. After shocking and clearing the pool of green algae, leaves and debris; which is usually the next day…we add clarifier. (Do not add more clarifier than directions indicate). Then the following day we add algaecide. Those are the only three chemicals we use. We used to check water hardness and others but have found over the years that it’s not worth the time, effort and money. It doesn’t make enough of a difference. Stay tuned for more 😊

Great tip! Unfortunately so much of the debris had started to break down into fine particles that trying to get them out with the leaf rake would have clouded the water up too fast. We wouldn’t be able to see the bottom of the pool to continue cleaning it. The debris had been sitting in the pool through the fall, winter & spring. Take care 😊

When we put the filter on waste, the water goes into the yard some and behind the pool. It would be best if it went with a longer hose into the street or if you’re in the country behind your yard away for example, but we have a tighter spot in the city. If you have a lot of chlorine in your pool, you have to be careful because if you put too much waste in one area of your yard you can kill some of the vegetation or more delicate type trees. When we vacuum to waste to get those leaves and twigs out, it goes out the same hole at the back of the filter that the water goes out when we backwash. I’m not sure if I totally answered your question, so feel free to message us again and we can try to explain better. 😊

Great question. We have city water which is on a 5 tiered payment price which drastically increases in cost as you use more and more gallons of water. In addition they add on a sewer cost even though the water wouldn’t be going into a sewer. I just did the math and it would be somewhere between 250 & 300 dollars. Add to it you have to find somewhere to put all that water and when you drain the pool you risk having damage issues with your pool walls. For us, it is far more worthwhile to use chemicals to clear the green pool water 😊

If you think ahead and register your pool with the water authority, they will let you refill once a year and take the sewage cost off the bill. Water is about $20.00. @@SilverLiningDayDreams

Not sure without looking at it, but I do know there are different filter set ups for different pools. Have you tried a flocculant? That can help the small particles to coalesce into larger particles that will drop to the floor and you can vacuum and help clear the pool water.

Sorry for the late response. We’re doing well; thanks. Hard for us to know what you need without being there. Maybe a backwash & rinse and another shocking and a few hours later add some clarifier and let the pool filter. Take care 😊

Depends on where you buy the liquid shock but the Champion brand 2 pack is normally around $40 for the pair. You can buy a cheaper brand, but we suggest the Champion brand when opening in the spring. After initial spring opening it’s less than a gallon a month to maintain. Let us know how it goes and if you take the plunge!

Are you consistently keeping a chlorine puck or two in the skimmer basket? Using the pool regularly enough to keep algae from “sticking”on surfaces? Maybe vacuum and shock more often? Sorry, it’s really hard without being there to really help you very-well.

Sorry I couldn’t get to your question earlier. Hopefully you’ve cleared the algae out of your pool by now. Sounds like as long as the little bit of algae at the bottom is loose and your free chlorine is good then yes put in some algaecide and and re-evaluate a couple days later. Sometimes we can’t clear everything up 100% but if the free chlorine is good we swim and afterwards make s whirlpool to move the loose debri into center of pool and then vacuum to waste the center of the pool the next morning

That’s a common question we get, and I’ve answered that in quite a few threads in the comments. But basically because all the wind, snow, rain, ice, leaves etc it becomes a big this muddy soup in the spring and it’s not the easiest to drain the water out. It’s been hard to get the tarp off because the tarp weighs about 500 pounds lol. We’ve had failures with the tarps in the past too. Because we put a new liner in this year we did cover it this fall and we’re gonna try it one more time, so stay tuned because will let you know how it goes😊

We periodically use a product called… Algae Complete; which is made by BioGuard. Sometimes we just use the cheap Walmart Algaecide. I can’t speak from experience to help answer your question because we have never had an issue with yellow algae. We just get the green stuff when we neglect our pool maintenance. Sorry 😊

We did not. Technically you’re supposed to balance your pool water first before shocking. Periodically adjusting your pool water conditions is time consuming (but helpful) but we usually don’t mess with it unless it’s really out of wack; not sure if all that work makes enough of a difference for us. But that’s us! Others are constantly making adjustments. Take care 😊

We typically use 4 gals for our 18,500 gallon pool. This time we went with 8 gals. Hope that helps you with the math some. Are you keeping a puck in the skimmer and using algaecide?

Great question! We tend too always have ours on. Some put their pool on a timer on filter mode for part of the day. We usually grow algae if we don’t run our pump pretty much continuously on filter mode

@@manjugangar3544 we drain about a third out of our pool. We want to be under our skimmer far enough so that the winter doesn’t allow too much precipitation to raise the pool level too far. It really depends on your climate and what your specific pool manufacturer recommends though. Hope that helps some 😊

To clear it up; yes, more than likely. There’s more adjusting with water quality (such as water hardness and more) that some people do. We have found over the years that for us it doesn’t make enough of a difference. So we just use chlorine, clarifier and algaecide. Take care 😊

@@officeassistant6072 Hi, sorry We didn’t notice this question sooner. Periodically we use clarifier which is called Polysheen Blue. It helps to clear cloudy water. Think of it as helping tiny particles clump together into larger particles to more easily be filtered. We don’t buy stabilizer which is also referred to as conditioner or CYA. Throughout the summer we will occasionally use those 4 in 1 or 6 in 1 or all in one bags to shock the pool and those will have some stabilizer and other things in them. Depends on what’s for sale locally usually. We just test for free chlorine for the most part ( not all the others). Technically speaking you’re supposed to check everything and manipulate the chemicals to “balance” them appropriately. For us, we just have found it’s not worth all the time/effort and fuss. We don’t use acid but I suspect our acid rains help 😂 Take care 😊

Yes, you should turn it off before you switch the settings. As for the vacuum hose (hose only, not attached to pole or vacuum head), try putting it in the pool the night before you vacuum letting it fill with water overnight.

I'm in the same exact boat, except I have a 24ft round. I've tried everything. Shock and floc worked last year and this year, nothing is touching it.

What a surprise today! After I tripled the amount of chlorine and the color didn’t change in a few hours I turned off the pump and thought I’d give up. But today the color is cloudy blue! I did another backwash and turned on the pump again.
