Silverstone Single Seater Experience Review - The One For Serious Drivers

I've done this experience 4 times so far. You don't do things 4 times unless they're both good AND good value. Drive a real race car as fast as you want to on a proper track - your ability and bravery are the only limit. No race licence required - just a normal driving licence and the desire to live out your dreams for a moment. If you (or the lucky person you're gifting this to) are a sim racer then I can't recommend it enough, it'll hit the spot!
I'm not affiliated, sponsored or endorsed by Silverstone Circuit, this is a straight-up customer review of the Silverstone Single Seater Experience because I want more folks to take part in something I have always loved. Please note that dates and availability vary, it's a popular experience and runs mostly on weekends. Be reminded that the circuit you drive on is the STOWE circuit and not the main F1 Circuit - the main circuit is used by the supercar experiences, but not the formula cars.

It's a cracker for £250 - I mean, don't tell Silverstone but if it was £350 it would still be decently priced

This video made me remember of a racing school somewhat near me and I just sent an email booking a 15 lap session in a F4 car! Thanks for the reminder Danny! 👌 (here its a bit more than £250, it's nearly 450 € but we do get a debrief and analysis halfway, so not too shabby xD)

The issue with the 360 cam is that by camera nature, the edge of the lenses generally hold the worst quality, the centre being the best. So with this camera mounted upwards, the best looking part of the footage is the sky. I won't be buying it this time round ( though I might go for the pictures as I carry my own custom helmet.) But I totally agree with your alternative of camera setups. It's a shame they don't allow for helmet cameras, something like a cambox would be great for replicating the drivers eye. Even an insta one Go (I think it's called) fitted inside would suffice. Looking forward to doing this in the wet of autumn though! The museum should be a blast too!!

That's right, all the action is happening on the periphery of the camera's lens so it's just not as good as it could be! Such a good experience in itself though

I went there last Sunday. It was a wet and windy weekend. At the briefing the marshal said that the day before someone bombed it out of the pots and crashed straight away. They wouldn’t let him get back in the car and he was extremely upset as he’d flown all the way from Italy to drive!

Ok so after having done my experience i can say it was fun but can not even hold a candle to Palmer Sport. Im going to be quite scathing in some respects. Palmer Sport single seaters are paddle shift and more horsepower and you can overtake where ever you want. The single seaters at Silverstone are awful, old cars. That H pattern 4 speed box is awful and is stupidly hard to make consistent gear changes. The biggest issue was not these things though, the issue is the way they deal with overtaking. The front guy in the train always gets the blue flag, so second guy runs through but the 2 vultures on his tail are faster than him but he doesnt let us through.... I was in a train of 4 cars, if i didnt pit i would be stuck behind them for 2 laps minimum because i need to wait for the next zone and we only clear one car per zone. The track was fun and the cars are still fun, but for an extra 150 pounds you can get half day at palmer sport and drive 3 different cars. Not sad I did it, but if you went to Palmer sport danny you would never go to silverstone again. They let anyone overtake anywhere, its a facility specifically for experience days and Silverstone seriously cant compete. Its just an ethos thing too.... Silverstone fine instructors for tyre squeel out on track.... you arent even allowed to get the tyres screeching they are so much more strict at an FIA track. My mate showed me a vid of one of the Plamer instructors doing doughnuts in a caterham whilst setting fireworks off lol. Go to Palmers you will have way more fun PS Also beat your time by 9 tenths of a second :D

I am looking at a racetrack driving options and this looks like a good bargain. However, I do see Palmer Motorsport is offering a £495 morning formula experience. Since the price is excluding VAT, it should be £594. It includes breakfast and lunch and it is 5 different car driving experiences. Not sure what other options are out there.

I really struggled with the gearbox too. Wheels frequently locked on downshift to 2nd gear which caused me some problems and caused a spin through the chicane as it was raining pretty solidly and I couldn’t catch it. Was then scared to push anymore as it’s two spins and you forfeit the rest of your session. I also found the blue flags not very effective in removing slower traffic so probably only ended up with 1-2 clear laps where I could push.

That's a shame to hear, man - it's the reason I hit the gearbox point hard, as I wouldn't want people to go in with high hopes and then spend most of the session fighting the transmission and coming away disappointed! I do think it's bound to be the biggest complaint they get by far, considering the gearbox is so alien and distant from what the average car driver will be used to.

Not sure how you'd get there but I'd imagine that transport links would be fairly good considering how many folks come from abroad to watch the F1. Best bet is reading this: www.silverstone.co.uk/visit-stay/getting-here ....do you have a helicopter?

Do you get any sim time? Are there any complete newbies or are most people a bit more serious? How long do you actually get on track?

There are usually a few clear newbies, you can see by the timing sheet at the end that there's a big spread - generally speaking this probably attracts more confident drivers but you won't be on track with a bunch of professionals! You get 30 minutes on track - 10 minutes under controlled pace, 20 minutes full speed no limits. There are no simulators but if you have a CSL DD with a Load Cell brake then you're mostly there. It's the right handed gearbox that's the bit of a wildcard - so long as you know about that in advance then you can prepare for it. It's normal to be slightly intimidated by these or they're not giving you that unforgettable thrill!

Hey Danny great video! Was wondering, you mentioned your iRacing buddy. Is there a car you can use in iRacing that is similar to the car you drive on the day? Or are they completely unique. I'm hoping to at least learn the track layout, but having a similar car would be a bonus! :)

I'll be honest - the best thing you can do to practice for this is to put your right arm down the back of the sofa and try to play guitar with it. That gearbox is the biggest tripper-upper you will face

If you know how to heel-toe then that'll be a big advantage, but you can feasibly do the whole course in 3rd and 4th so it's not gonna be a big problem for you if not

I'm pretty sure they'll allow it, yeah - always worth ringing ahead to check! You'll have a great time, just remember to practice those right-handed dog-box gearshifts so you don't lose any time getting used to that, you'll thank yourself for it!

£250!! Bargain!! I did a single seater experience for that price at Oulton park years ago that consisted of 4 laps on the Fosters circuit in a Rover MG and 4 laps in a single seater. Total track time was literally 10 minutes!!

Any idea how fast you get up to on that straight? I went recently and was too focused to check the speedo, I felt like I was going so quick, but I wonder because of how low you are the sense of speed is a bit deceiving. I know it tops at 140 but not enough straight for that much speed.

The experience itself is £249 all inclusive. If you want them to supply photos and videos then that costs extra, but the base experience is £249, no hidden fees like insurance etc.

@@axeld00m I had a good time but after going to Palmer Sports, id never go back to silverstone again, for a bit more money you get to drive more cars and the single seater at palmers is literally night and day different. An extra hundred horsepower, paddle shift and no restrictions on over taking. I have friends who work there also so i managed to squeeze a free hotlap out of them too :D

I'd recommend doing the super car experience if you're a big motorsport fan. Got 10-15 laps of the actual silverstone circuit rather than the tiny stowe circuit. It's also cheaper

You need to be over 18 and have a UK driver's licence for at least a year, so sadly you'll have to wait to try this but keep it in your sights for when you're able to drive!

Possibly, I would contact them and ask. Here's what their site says - "Age: 18 or over. Height: 5ft 2 ins - 6ft 4ins. Contact us if you're over 6ft 4ins. Maximum weight: 18 stone"
