It seems like this is the real take for the recording and not just a demo, so I'm surprised that they just walk around the room holding the mic. And I always thought that standing in front of glass like that would cause some reflections in the recording. Apparently I have a lot to learn, because I love these songs and they way they sound.

Yeah! The SM7B is good at isolating a voice up close, but even then, this seems really unconventional. But hey, the final product sounds amazing so whatever works!

What would bands do without their producers...good producers that is.

Surprised how they're just able to walk around a room while making noises as they sing. My microphone can pick up the sound of my stomach.

+Chris Kotra Yeah I was thinking that too. Maybe they have the sensitivity/pre-amp set pretty low, which would make sense since his mouth is right up to the mic.

+Chris Kotra sometimes it depends on the type of mic used, they all have different kinds of pickup patterns; some types will pick up a whole room, and some of them drop off in sensitivity pretty fast. on top of that, once you place all the instruments, drums, etc, sometimes it's still there but you just don't notice.

+Chris Kotra They're using the Shure SM7b which has a really shallow "depth of field."

@@tehJoe11 the pre would be somewhat cranked for an sm7, tho being as directional as they are i could see the glass tapping being no big deal, or they may just be scratch vocals, love brian but he can do better than these takes xD
@shawnt57798 жыл бұрын
Just curious, when Brian taps on the glass, does that sound get recorded, isolated and removed on the final version? Or was this more of a trial and error video before the final recordings? Regardless, still amazing vocals!

Also, I like how they filled up the room with heaps of Christmas lights. Seems like a bit of effort.

I suspected it as soon as I heard it, Knife Lee had way too much to do with these last two albums, that's why they're not organic or Silversun Pickups sounding. I hope Brian goes back to being himself and stop listening to mainstream opinions. I want old Brian back in non overproduced mixes. Call up the other producer, he was great.

I think now it's Butch Vig, for the next album

I really liked Neck of the Woods. Better nature has grown on me. Brian said in the Reverb interview that working with Jackknife was a very deliberate choice and they wanted him to have more control over the direction of the music. I’m sure I’m not echoing his sentiment well, but check out the interview if you get a chance!

@@meh.4161 Widow's Weeds is a masterpiece. Butch Vig really did them a favour.

i agree the dave cooley albums were peak sspu, tho butch vig did awesome with widows weeds. the jacknife albums are still worthwhile but lacking in the same spirit imo
