I know these longer videos are tedious to make, but I want you to know that they are highly HIGHLY appreciated. All these in-depth videos are super interesting to watch. The educational aspect of your tutorials is what makes them so unique, specially the longer ones. It’s always a pleasure to get over a topic and pick something new.

Nice tutorial! 3:00 - most beautiful lenses are triplets IMHO, modern examoles by meyer-optik-goerlitz. The less glass the better... more rendition, color saturation and micro-contrast. Well rendering wont deal with that anyway.

SLVRWNG men, you're by far the most amazing channel on youtube capable of explain and share so much great contenten not only for octane or CD4, but the science behind rendering. It's not like a tutorial on how to do something, you're are sharing the very meat behind the physics. I'm an enthusiast of motion, 3d and rendering, I'm always trying to learn things, grow my knowledge behind the process and you always are sharing in a way that could keep us excited to see your next video. Hi there and thank you for your nice comment. Split focus diopters are a real thing that have been used mostly in older films. Basically those are cut in half screw on lenses that give you a different focal point for half of the image. If you google it, you probably see examples. Thank you also for your suggestion. As volumes are a really complicated subject (as you know) and therefore a tut would cost quite some time to produce I am shying away from the idea right now. Maybe you will get lucky in the long run 😇

Hello Silverwing, do you know which is the earliest Octane version that has this Universal Camera? I only use perpetual licenses because subscriptions are too much risk. but not sure if there is a perpetual that has this camera type (or at least aparture maps)
@SilverwingVFX
@SilverwingVFX Ай бұрын
Hey hey. Thank you very much for your comment and your question. The Universal Camera came into Octane in release 2020.1 It was however somewhat usable before that as an OSL camera. But not with all the features that I show in the video above. Hope this helps 🙌 P.s. I would also prefer to go back into a world with perpetual licenses 😊

@@SilverwingVFX ok, thanks! Yes, we should advocate perpetual softwares more often. and also speak out against subscriptions as an only option. Or report more often at consumer protections etc. about such and more consumer related subscription ripoff.

great work. love the notched look. Looks like there is interesting uses for some light kaleidoscope effects with high values. I wonder can you have the C4d Camera deformer act on this? or is it further down the stack of operations?
@SilverwingVFX
@SilverwingVFX Жыл бұрын
Thank you very much for your nice comment and your question. Unfortunately for now, all the settings of the Circular, Polygonal and Noteched Aperture are hard coded to the camera shading system. So no way to apply any changed outside of the already existing possibilities. If you know programming, you can write your own camera in octane though. Therefore we have the OSL camera preset!

Thank you for these tutorial videos. What I want to learn is: Which lens is closest to the human eye in cinema 4D? Based on my own experience, I use the sensor size as 70 mm Focal Length and 50 mm. Do you think this is true? According to my research no one changes the sensor size. Thank you!
@SilverwingVFX
@SilverwingVFX Жыл бұрын
Hey Muartive, thank you very much for your comment! About your question. Hmmmm I honestly have no idea. The saying is that with 35mm sensor, the closest would be 50mm. But some say it is wider, more like 35mm. I actually did not think about it to much to be honest. About sensor size. I at least never change it. In general everything that can be done with a 70mm sensor, can also be done with a 35mm sensor. The numbers for the focal length and f-stop are just different. In real world bigger sensors have a wider FOV on the same focal length and shallower depth of field.

Hey, this is great. One issue I am having is that when I switch to Universal camera then live viewer becomes quite slow. Is this normal?
@SilverwingVFX
@SilverwingVFX Жыл бұрын
Hey hey, thank you very much for your comment! Depending what you are doing rendering with universal camera is slower. Using custom bokeh shapes is super slow (you also notice that the scene becomes more unresponsive. Also I noticed when you switch back and forth between a thinlens camera and an universal camera the scene might become laggy for about 30 seconds and then responsive again. If you have a somewhat decent GPU and your scene become super laggy / slow, that is definitely not expected!

i was wondering how could i simulate aperture rotation like helios 44-2 lenses, do you have any tips on that?
@SilverwingVFX
@SilverwingVFX 11 ай бұрын
Thank you very much for your question. I am guessing you are talking about the so called swirly bokeh? I think a combination of settings might come close. Definitely a combination of Optical Vignetting, Cola, Spherical Aberration and maybe some Astigmatism. You probably won´t get the exact effect but, you can definitely get some swirly bokeh... Sorry I am not able to give you some formula or something. Usually its the mix of understanding the settings (which this video should at least make more easy) and then researching the "flaws" of the original lense that gives it its characteristic.

Another very nice totorial! I still in search to find a realistic way to do an anamorphic lens with distortion in Octane without having to put a "fake lens object" in front of the camera... If you have any idea? Peace!
@SilverwingVFX
@SilverwingVFX Жыл бұрын
Thank you. I much appreciate your kind words. What are you looking for in an anamorphic lens? The most simple way would be (as I mentioned in the video) to just squeeze the bokeh shape. I say in the video that the factor is 2. But after studying a bit more, this might not be right. I have to do the math on it.

@@SilverwingVFX Haha You will understand what I mean., I actually found a nice technique in a interview for blender... But don't know I to do it with c4d octane. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/e8uYa8aj29nVknU.html (Go at 52:08)
@SilverwingVFX
@SilverwingVFX Жыл бұрын
@@learn2share461 Thank you for the link. I think I get what you mean. So its a basically a barrel distortion that only takes place on the horizontal axis of a frame. The vertical axis is barely or not distorted. You can pretty much do the same effect in octane when choosing the panoramic camera. But you have to type in those numbers by hand. There is no focal length there. If you want the nice Bokeh of the Universal Camera, you would have to use lens distortion maps. Those are the same as saved out Texture Coordinate (UV coordinate) maps. So what you could do is take a 16:9 3D plane. Distort it in the fashion you like. Point your camera straight on the plane, so it shows the mostly everything (minus the parts that were barrel distorted above and below the frame. Then render a Texture Coordinate of that (best use 16bit or even linear exr) Then load it in as your distortion texture. I made a distortion map creation scene using a FFD deformer and linked it to the description. As well as a file showcasing how to apply it. If you have any questions about it, let me know. Hope this helps.
