Welcome to part 9 of my sim racing setup guide. This video is all gear ratios and differential settings. This series of videos is intended to give beginners an overview of how to set up a car in any of the modern racing sims.
Throughout all 12 videos, I have been describing in detail the various aspects of car setup and how to bring all of them together to build a car setup.
The first 10 videos explain the ins and outs of each setup area, trying to explain the how and the why. Then, video 11 starts to bring everything together and talk through the process of building a setup. Finally, I’ve included video 12 as a case study of an Assetto Corsa setup that I created for the Audi R8 GT3.
If you want to skip to any specific sections of the Sim Racing Setup Guide you can do so using the following links:

This was always going to be one of the harder topics to cover but you did a great job here Chris. Being concise and to the point without losing viewers in the terminology is pretty hard when you’re discussing diffs. This is always a huge part of car setup if you ask me. It can make and break numerous handling issues on entry and exit 👍🏼 Great video once again.

let me just add a point: always leave a little bit before the rev limited on the last gear. Because if in race you get in the slipstreaming of someone, your car will reach a higher speed faster, if u leave it right at the limited when ur alone, u will not take full advantage of the slipstreaming.

Very well done Chris. I think this general way of explaining these different parts of setups is great. Though on top of this people still need to look for the details of game specific factors since they can vary quite a lot. So here is a suggestion. Make a final video where you point out these major differences between common sims like: Project CARS, iRacing, Assetto Corsa and maybe rFactor 2. That would be a really unique video and extremely helpful. You would not need to go through every single little detail, just those that matter most. Like pressure in AC must be in a certain narrow window vs. Project CARS where you need to balance it with the IMO temperature readings. I had to do a LOT of research to understand how these things work in each of the games to get any good setups done. Sure the basics are the same in each, but some sims just overvalue some aspects more then others that actually make a big difference in the end.

You really need to understand every aspect of the car setup to make a setup work. There is so many things affecting the handling of the car and can really mess you up if you're not aware. I've started doing setups recently and the amount of things you need to know is abysmal at least ;)

@Leynad778
@Leynad778 5 жыл бұрын
Great explanation, but my cure for power over- and understeer is rather the opposite, even it doesn't work in AC like that. And it's the difficult to judge diff-settings in the first place, because locked and open differential have oversteer and understeer tendencies depending on the car and situation. Cars like the Super V8 or Porsche C962 with a spool can have power oversteer and understeer and cars with open differential like the Skip Barber and USF2000 in rF2 as well, but the last ones seems more nimble through corners. So the best is IMO to know both extremes to judge what characteristics you want more or less with an LSD.
@ChrisHaye
@ChrisHaye 5 жыл бұрын
Oh, for sure Leynad Jee - and it's worth considering the other contributing factors as well. The 962 for example has the classic understeer on turn in and oversteer on the power at low speeds, but faster speeds it will understeer on the power - which is I think what you are referencing.
@Leynad778

@@ChrisHaye With ridiculous huge tyres in the rear comes understeer:) Power oversteer seems more related to the high toe settings to get away without a diff and when a car power-oversteers, i usually neutralize toe first in all related cars.

To nitpick a little :P Technically, open diff sends equal power to both wheels. Which is why it is bad, the same power that is required to rotate a wheel that has no grip (i.e. is not on the ground) is send to the other wheel, which is obviously not sufficient to move the car. Closed diff splits the torque, so both wheels are spinning at the same speed... which can mean that 100% of power is send to one wheel. This is important to know, because some LSD are set by setting the maximum torque difference between wheels. So a lower torque difference = more open diff.
@ChrisHaye

Yeah, you're absolutely right Matus - I should have been more precise with my language there.

@@ChrisHaye As I said, it was just a little nitpick on one of the best introduction series to car setups. I really hope that you'll continue to produce videos like these, because you're not only knowledgeable about the topic, but you also know how to transform the knowledge into great, easily watchable, videos, with hight production quality. Which is not that common ;)
@lingSpeed
@lingSpeed 5 жыл бұрын
@Matus Celko, And a nitpick of a nitpick :P. With open diff power is NOT sent to both wheels equally. Power is work over time, and work is force over distance so technically the wheel that spins faster receives more power. What open differential sends equally thou is torque. Using power here gets ugly fast when trying to understand how diff actually works. Thou i can't blame Chris since it's more intuitive to describe what diff does for a layman using power. So @Chris Haye you had the correct idea there :)

In GP4 there is: Differential - Acceleration - Shaft Speed diff. Differential - Acceleration - Input Torque Differential - Deceleration - Shaft Speed diff. Differential - Deceleration - Input Torque I would guess, that acceleration is "power" and deceleration is "coasting" as you put it. I don't quite know what Shaft Speed and Input Troque means. I guess Shaft speed is the locking and input torque the preload? It is difficult to test. I have the feeling, putting Input torque decel to 0 makes my car want to spin A LOT on curve entry. Decel Shaft Speed to 0 makes it less twitchy, but I still can influence my turning a lot by lifting my foot from the gas. Any idea what these settings mean? Great video by the way!

I’ve always been confused with the diff coast bit. Why would the diff need to lock up when coasting?. Is there actual torque going to the wheels when coasting? I thought its only when on throttle and sending power to the wheels. I’m easily confused

bit confusing when as you mention, the terminology different sims use differs. Gran Turismo for example offers initial, acceleration and braking values. From a baseline setup, many, many consistant laps have to be made then alter a setting a little to see if lap times improve, as with any car setup. Unless you are a full-time sim racer, it can take a few weeks to setup a car properly to your taste.

the problem i often find is whether the corner behaviour is a result of incorrect diff settings or incorrect ARB settings.

Funny I always thought a locked or closed differential sent equal amounts of torque to both wheels, a open unlock differential send power to only one wheel, usually the right wheel and a limited slip differential distributed power based on wheel spin, for example if the left wheel is spinning more than the right wheel, less torque would be sent to it and more torque would be sent to the right wheel.

Hey Timo - As Jurica Slovinac said, in RWD cars, a locked diff causes power oversteer.
@DawgPro
@DawgPro 5 жыл бұрын
YES it Does. Your Statement is correct for FWD and RWD. It is depicted wrong in this video... wall of text coming up! If one mashes up the "Loud Pedal" coming out of a tight corner, what ever the diff, ramp or lock setting, if the rears light up... be prepare to go full opposite lock... wrong driving technique. "By limiting the slippage between the rear wheels, the differential can have a profound impact on the car's handling. The rule of thumb is: the more the diff limits slippage, the more the car will tend to go straight or understeer -- up to a point -- On the power side, if enough torque is applied to spin both wheels, the car will snap into oversteer." (www.intothered.dk/simracing/differential.html) That means, on a long fast sweeper, at 100% lock, the inside rear want to rotate at the same speed as the outside one. The rear axle wants to make the car to go straight. 100% lock, the car will not turn. At 0% lock, it will turn all we want but it wont accelerate out of anywhere (smoke show anyone). Just one more balancing act! Setting lock percentage by how the rear end pops out is wrong. IRL, bye bye rear tyres in just a few laps. Always set your diff while driving with your head, not your right foot. Not sliding... all wheels well planted. To augment rotation during power exit, diminish understeer : lower diff power. To diminish rotation during power exit, augment understeer : augment diff power. This way it physically match with: To augment rotation during coasting entry, diminish understeer : lower diff coasting. To diminish rotation during coasting entry, augment understeer : augment diff power. There are a lot of very technical books out there but, for many readers, going through those can be quite harsh. Drive to Win - Carroll Smith Tune to Win - Carroll Smith How To Make Your Car Handle - Fred Puhn Going Faster - Carl Lopez Many years ago, I learned everything from a little book that was a breeze to read: Four Wheel Drift by Steve Smith. The guide that came with Grand Prix Legend. The people who did not go through that booklet found GPL undrivable. The guys who did... became racers. Original : sierrachest.com/gfx/games/GPLegends/box/Four-Wheel%20Drift.pdf Redux : www.autosimsport.net/media/downloads/GPLmanualREDUX-2.pdf Originale en Français : gletellier.free.fr/fwd.pdf Exert: "Alison Hine uses the tire temps to help adjust the differential. Taking a reading coming off the Parabolica where you’re most likely to get wheelspin, she looks at the temp of the inside (RR) tire. If it’s higher than the outside tire temp, which would normally be the hotter of the two, she knows she’s spinning the inside tire, and adds a clutch or two until the temp drops. She knows she’s gone too far when both tires break loose together, sending the car into snap oversteer. Then she removes one clutch the inside tire should now begin to spin just before the outside tire breaks loose." In Grand Prix Legend: --- High ramp angles equal Low locking % --- high clutch # roughly equal to high preload % --- Augmenting preload "mainly" sets the minimum level of locking so you don't get an open diff during the transition between power and coast. --- Adding clutches Modifies how fast that transition, that locking happens. www.taylor-race.com/sites/default/files/DIFFERENTIAL%20ESSAY%20W%20PHOTOS2.pdf www.ripublication.com/ijaer18/ijaerv13n2_89.pdf downloads.optimumg.com/Technical_Papers/DifferentialAnalysis_BertaReport.pdf

Chris, one thing I don't get is coast settings. You say that lift off oversteer is caused by too little diff coast locking. In a turn in, off throttle situation, wouldn't a completely open diff be providing the most rear traction because you are allowing both tires to move completely independently and find their max grip? Intuitively this makes me think you would apply LESS diff coast locking to cure turn in oversteer. Where am I going wrong in my thinking please?
@DawgPro
@DawgPro 5 жыл бұрын
With little diff coast locking : The wheels can turn at what ever speed... RPM they want so the car can rotate on itself. With more diff coast locking : Both rear wheel are forced to turn at the same RPM so the car rotation is restricted. And that is where one can see that the on power behavior explained in this video does not jive. (see my other post under Timo Engel post).

Im pretty sure you R wrong about coast setting, especially how it impact the handling. More locking makes car rotate more under braking. Due to wheels locking and losing grip. The same thing happens under acceleration. More locking on power and you get the power slide.
