For those wondering, you do not need to know anything about the fate universe before playing fate extra. It and its sequels kinda exist in its own universe where they has almost no connection with any other works in the franchise. Although there are characters and concepts that are introduced in other fate and/or type moon works. It explains everything you need to know about fairly well.

IMO I do recommend watching the main 3 routes in Fate/Stay Night (DEEN FSN, Unlimited Blade Works, and Heaven's Feel) before playing Extra, specifically if you're choosing Archer as your Servant. Archer is the same one in F/SN and repeatedly references the original animes/visual novel, particularly in highlighting the differences in the characters. In addition, the player can appreciate the returning characters a lot more should they go through the original routes first.

I actually really enjoyed the combat in Fate/Extra. It helps reinforce how important it is to learn as much as you can about your opponent. If you follow the individual arc stories to completion, you get a heads-up about the opponent's moveset, and as such can plan your moves accordingly much easier. It's the difference between getting mercilessly bopped and effortlessly shredding, for the majority of foes. As a result, it puts a lot of emphasis on listening to the story and following it's beats, since sometimes you can completely miss arc progression if you aren't paying attention. It also reflects how, in the series lore, it's extremely important to know who the enemy Servant is, as that knowledge informs you of their capabilities. Fate/Extra Record will likely be more accessible, and hopefully will adapt that theme somehow, but for what it is I actually thought Fate/Extra's combat was really fun.

@koheikyouji
@koheikyouji 2 жыл бұрын
Hmm. Since quite a lot of people are looking to pick up The Lost Child, I'll just go ahead and copy and paste my comment from above in hopes it helps ''I posted in a comment just a moment ago, but if you do get the game, beware of a couple of game breaking bugs In combat your allies will randomly learn skills and activate them in place of what you told them to. If a demon learns a skill before the actual tutorial for learning skills, the main girl who cant be removed will never lear a skill for the rest of the game. Basically, make sure she is the first thing to learn a skill by reaching that tutorial. Otherwise, reload. And the other that I found is if you do the optional 100 floor dungeon. If you beat floor 80, do not exit the dungeon to go and save like I did. Instead, go up to floor 81, and use the exit on that floor instead. Leaving on floor 80 causes a bug that disables the stairs to floor 81, meaning you can never ever beat that dungeon. I lost a good 60 hours due to this and still havent gone back. Hope you enjoy the game despite this.''

The Cold Steel games do have some social sim elements, it is a bit light with more of a focus on the combat and story. One thing is it is part of a larger series, while you can play the game without playing the other games, you really get more out of the game playing them, since 3 take place before the events of Cold Steel, and 2 happen along side the events of Cold Steel I and II (those two games are also not out in the west yet)

Yeah I like Caligula as well despite its many flaws. The combat is too easily cheesed, the social quests are a logistical chore with little payout, and the graphics are questionable at best. But the story, characters, and themes of escapism and mental trauma are tackled with precision and heart (The game's creator was an actual psychologist!) And by far the best quality? The music. Each area had its own track tied to each boss that were not only certifiable bangers, but also served representations of each of their characters and their inner struggles. That kind of seamless integration is rare these days. The sequel is on my wishlist and my hopes are high.

I played the lost child a few years back and I remember liking it a lot, though I saw where it had some rough edges. I played it on normal difficulty, so take it with a grain of salt, but I thought the game was easy enough, Enoch just kind of blows everything out of the water once he gets some decent skills (watch out for that bug that will make Lua unable to learn skills ever if Enoch learns a skill before the skill tutorial.) I loved the occult theming throughout the game. Investigating paranormal stuff by talking to citizens and then going to the dungeon and fighting the demons responsible, It was just kinda my jam, you know? I agree with some astral designs being pretty lame, but they do get better as the game proceeds. Also, it takes a really, really long time for you to be able to remove an astral from your party, was it just me? That feature didn't seem to unlock until way late in the game. I was impressed that the creator of el shaddai ended up having to buy the rights to the game so that he could make the lost child. I guess he just loved the world that he created and wanted to expand it himself. I guess you could say he wanted to give it some TLC. LOL

I'm really not familiar with Fate as a whole, but I think I have an idea why the gameplay of Fate/Extra is made this way and it's to reinforce the idea that you need a very solid planning of your moves. You and your opponent are in a 1v1 duel and are sort of equal in strength, the one who can outmanouver and outsmart another wins, so they tried to emulate the mind games that come from trying to predict what your opponent will do and how you wanna condition them to respond but in a turn based system

As one who loves both series a lot, especially because of how both approach mythology and historical characters in various ways, this was a really good video. Fate Extra Record is coming soon, and its ditching the rock-paper-scissor mechanic, and so far it looked way better. So yeah, its gonna be fun. I know Fate and SMT both are mythology based but they are too different. But! I think both SMT and Fate fans could have enjoyment in the other series. Maybe not totally, but both offer different things so while they have a similar theme, its still unique enough. So yeah, if you like SMT, you might like Fate. If you like Fate, you might like SMT! Sorta similar, there is a game on the PS1 called Legend of Legaia. In it there are these monsters called seru who helped humanity, but we're driven mad by this strange mist that started appearing. The heroes equip themselves with a special ra-seru that attaches to their arm and allows them to absorb seru to summon as magic. The combat system is also very unique, requiring the player to make special moves out of different combinations of up down left right. Amazing game, 10/10

I STRONGLY recommend Tokyo Xanadu. It's action RPG combat, but the characters and story go really in-depth in a fun episodic anime style structure. Its setting is also similar to Persona 5 despite releasing a few years before it. Particularly when one of the party members is basically male Futaba.

Whilr gameplay is quiet different, Ar Tonelico has a lot of similar social elements with the Persona games to the point its important since like Persona it actually helps you in combat sinxe its the only way to access stronger magic, in this case Song Magic. Hell the main social mechanic of the Ar Tonelico series, The Cosmosphere, is similar to Social Links since its all about getting to know and explore other characters although Ar Tonelico goes deeper in depth since you do it by traveling to worlds inside the persons mind sinilar to Palaces. I would recommend the 2nd if you want the best experience if you ever want to check them out.

Posting this BEFORE watching the video, but to anyone wanting to pick up The Lost Child, DO be aware that it does have some game breaking bugs that still havent been patched. Ones that I discovered I will write as follows. Its a good game...I think? Just...beware: In this game your demons learn skills semi-randomly during battle. IF a demon happens learns a skill before the tutorial TELLS you how learning skills work, your main ally (Basically Nemissa from Soul Hackers who can never be removed) will never ever learn a skill. So reload and try to reach the skill learning tutorial without your demons learning anything. Next. The optional 100 floor dungeon. Should you choose to tackle this, once you beat floor 80, DO NOT LEAVE, like I did. Its a tough floor so youll naturally want to exit and save, but dont. Leaving on floor 80 locks you out of the rest of that dungeon, meaning you can never beat the postgame. I lost maybe 60 hours of dungeon crawling to this and still havent gone back to redo it all. Go up to floor 81, and use the exit on that floor instead. I havent played in a long time, but if I remember any other bugs, I will edit them into this comment. I do not want people going through what I did.

If you like the 1st person dungeon crawling of Persona Q & Q2 (especially Persona Q & Q2), Devil Summoner & Soul Hackers, Strange Journey, SMT 1, 2 & If....., and even both MT games, I'd highly recommend Etrian Odyssey. Sure it doesn't have fusions or negotiations, but it has a character creator and skill trees instead. Also, you get to draw the map, and most of the dungeons aren't as frustrating and confusing as some of the ones in SMT. *cough cough* World of Sloth and Sector Eridanus *cough cough*. Emphasis on most, because postgame dungeons LOVE their teleports and one-way shortcuts. It also has the SMT level challenge that I know y'all crave. BTW, binds and ailments are about as important in EO as buffs and debuffs are in Shin Megami Tensei. Also, they might seem generic and lighthearted story-wise, but *HOOOOOOO BOY* will that not be the case for super long. People who have beaten the first game or its remake will know exactly what I'm talking about. Let's just say you're in for one hell of a twist.

Really wished you mentioned Tokyo Xanadu. Like Persona, it takes place around a high school setting and uses the calendar system to split up combat and social outings. If anyone wants to give it a go, it’s usually on sale for 11$ on PS4 or steam.

The Mary Skelter games from Compile Heart are also pretty solid first person dungeon crawlers. Originally vita games, they're also on switch and PC now. Mary Skelter 2 also contains the first game if you buy it on switch/PC. The games take place inside a living tower, complete with meaty doors and walls with eyeballs. The characters are all from various fairy tales, like Rapunzel and Sleepying Beauty. It's standard turn based combat with each character getting a set of classes to choose from. The twist comes in the bloodstain mechanic. Hitting weak points or overkilling enemies stains team members with blood, which they can consume to enter a personal powered up state, or can lick off other team members to give the whole party an effect. Staining the dungeon itself with blood is permanent (it even persists if you leave the dungeon and come back) and affects things like light and encounter rate. There's quite a bit of content to be had: a few more mechanics I didn't mention (like invincible bosses that chase you through dungeons), a story that is pretty trope-heavy but has a few twists, both EN and JP voice acting is available, and several difficulty options. Overall, I had a good time with it.

The thing about the CONCEPTION series is that, despite Conception II being the first game in the series to get a western release, it wasn't as much loved by some of the veterans back when it was released. And it kinda died down over time... UNTIL Conception I got a Western Release/Remaster just very recently and it kinda is the best game to start out with if anyone's interested. As someone who played the original Conception game.... on the PSP... in Japanese... with absolutely no clue back then what was happening, it's pretty fun. I think your criticisms of fate/extra are very fair but I also think you should check out how the other servants play (since you only showed saber gameplay, which is the most reliant on basic attacks), I think archer introduces a good middle ground between having to use your skills and having good basic attacks so you dont have to go hard on either, and caster (IMHO best girl) goes really hard into spells, which is a detriment and a godsend at the same time, her basics are pretty pathetic but they do in a pinch, however due to her having recoverable mp and more mp overall, she really allows you to to play the game differently, you can now take control of the battle and reduce risks by using skills during unknown attacks, nullfying anything but skills, she's much less memorization heavy but at the expense of also having really weak defense, which personally made me enjoy the gameplay a lot more, (not to mention she was harder to play overall, AND dumping everything into magic didnt help haha, since I am also one of those who plays RPGs for difficult gameplay)

Mind 0 was a great game and wish it had a sequel. The Minds/persona like play more of a role in battle than a Persona that basically just your skills. I played P1 and I would argue the gameplay and dungeon are better, though the story isn't as interesting. Story is decent though. Fate Extra fights aren't that bad. I also wouldn't call it hard. Very rarely would you ever lose to an enemy encounter and only boss fights are somewhat difficult but that's the fun. Having to actually predict your opponents moves and thinking ahead was a great element to the gameplay that turn base just doesn't have and is somewhat dull.

good thing nyarly didn’t talk about the japan-only follow-up game to Fate/Extra, Fate/Extra CCC. it’s kind of like the Sakura route in Fate/Stay Night whilst Fate/Extra has the metaphorical Saber and Rin route. it’s the same game, but with a slightly different UI. it also has a fourth servant you can choose (but i ain’t telling who it is). my guess as to why it wasn’t localized was probably due to the SPICE (read: lewd scenes) it had. if you wanna tackle it yourself, then you have to put up with pure japanese text and pray to every god there’s a translated walkthrough of it. the translation of the game isn’t done yet (but it might be this year, who knows), and choices matter much more here than in the original. fun fact, kinoko nasu once allegedly stated that Extra CCC was going to be the last thing he was going to involve himself in with the Fate franchise. that was a fucking lie.

Another game exactly like SMT is Demon Gaze Extra. It is by the same developer who made The Lost Child, Kadokawa Games. There is an enhanced remaster for Switch that came out very recently. Demon Gaze Extra is a first person dungeon crawler that is extremely difficult even on normal. You catch demons using what's known as the demon gaze. The catch is the longer you have a demon out, the more demon resource they drain. If the resource hits 0 then the demon will go berserk and attack you. As the MC you can have up to 3 demons out at a time. Demon Gaze Extra has some nice mechanics. Though unlike The Lost Child or mainline SMT there is a small selection of obtainable demons that are captured via story missions.

Of these games, the one that interests me is The Lost Child. I hope we see more videos like this soon, because I'm always looking for more RPG's that take a page out of SMT's book. Megami Tensei games have been the golden standard for JRPG's, so I'm surprised more of them haven't caught up yet in terms of quality-of-life improvements. That being said, are there any JRPG's or indie RPG's with a similar style to older SMT games? I'm not talking monster-collection per-se, but a more grounded, dark or mature setting? Or anything that's got that dark, violent OVA charm to it? Maybe with a similar urban or 90's cyberpunk setting? I'd love to know it more inspired games exist out there. Even Japanese/indie games from other genres that have a similar style.

if you enjoy action JRPGs, I cannot beg you enough to give Tokyo Xanadu eX+ a try. In my opinion it matches Persona in visuals and music, and the cast feels a lot like a persona game, with bonding episodes between the protag and party characters. The story is definitely weaker than a persona game, and it can get a little weird sometimes, but the writing is still good and there's none of those pervy/ cringy scenes that Atlus like putting in. However, where this game really shines (especially if you love thoroughly exploring a world) is the world building - every NPC feels like their own unique character, and every location and shop feels different and useful. Gameplay is super fun and easy to pick up, even if you haven't played other action RPGs - combat feels smooth and the dungeons are fun and varied. I literally can't stress how much fun I've had with this game, and I feel like it gets a lot of slack for being a Persona "clone", but I feel like it's different enough from Persona that it definitely shouldn't be ignored!!

The combat in Conception 2 actually gets a lot harder the more you get into it (Or at least I thought so maybe I just sucked at it) It get's pretty interesting cause eventually you can unlock more classes for the kids to be born into however those classes are locked behind stat thresholds and only certain heroines can give your kids the right stats to be able to be born into that class (For example Feene gives your kids more Defense which makes it easier for them to become a paladin and Ellie gives your kids more magic which is good for making mages). And since you need to have high affection with a heroine in order to make stronger kids this means that if you want the best teams possible then you need to prioritize hanging out with ALL the girls as opposed to just your favorites which I think is pretty cool. Despite it's weird premise and far from perfect story or characters I still thought it was a pretty underrated gem on the vita when I first played it. Glad to see someone talking about it for once

Really enjoyed Conception 2. The day care area is very important. Getting your kids to work and levelling up the town opens avenues for improved kids/conception. You need to go for threesomes (sorry) to get the high level kids. You literally have to kick what feels like hundreds of kids out of your apartment to get the best gear etc. Two pro tips: Get the relationship events positive and negative with your partners as much as possible on the first playthrough. Some of the floors have sweet spots for grinding. Also consider the Monokuma DLC if you are struggling with the grind. The EXP and money is great. Only bad thing with the DLC is there is no story or uniqueness. It's just a bad guy with a Monokuma skin. Still the rewards are great for grinding. All the best! If you can get Conception on PS4!
