In this edition, Mahtab and Shafiq explore the similarities between Malay and Persian (Farsi). Although one is an Indo-European and the other an Austronesian language, there are many similarities between the two languages, mainly due to historical links between Malaysia and the Middle East. Malay is a major language of the Austronesian family spoken in Brunei, Indonesia, Malaysia and Singapore and also used in some parts of the Philippines as a trading language. Persian (Farsi) is one of the Western Iranian languages and belongs to the Indo-European language family. It is primarily spoken in Iran, Afghanistan, and Tajikistan, as well as regions which were historically part of Greater Iran. It is written in the Persian alphabet, a modified variant of the Arabic script. Persian has influenced many neighboring languages, and historically it was the first language in the Muslim world to put an end to Arabic's monopoly on writing in Islamic countries, and Persian poetry became the court tradition in many eastern courts. The Persian influence in the Malay Peninsula go back to many centuries ago. Many of the words found in common between Malay and Persian are the result of traders and merchants who historically created a strong connection between the two nations.

Malays don't really call 'port' as 'bandar' these days. 'Bandar' in Malay is a city or town, while the word for port is 'pelabuhan'. However, it does take you back in history when the old Malay kingdoms had trading ports that traded with Arabs, Persians, Portuguese and etc, and eventually the meaning of 'bandar' slowly progressed from 'port' to 'town/city'.

Many Malaysian themselves got confuse. The reason why Malay got so many Indian's rooted word is not because of Indian origin people in Malaysia. The first language influenced Malay language is actually Sanskrit, back when the Malays were practicing Hindu with Buddha's influence religion. Then when Malays converted to Islam, a lot of Arabic words start to influence Malay language. And lastly our modern words are influenced by English because of British colonisation.

@Jacky Phantom although we have loan word but some of them have 2 both in Malay and Arabic, that because Islam, that why Rencong, Surat ulu writing script replace by Arabic called jawi, it make read Quran easy, example tubuh in malay badan in Arabic, haiwan Arabic = malay is binatang, babi(Filipino also Austronesian babui) khinzir, pusara=kubur, tentera=askar an many more is because arabic is 2nd language before English in pre-colonial, just today malay use English word but already exist in malay like so, then, you, i, infrastructure=prasarana, intitusi=pranata, tular=viral many2 more

Persian has so many similarities with many languages in northwest Asia and the Indian Ocean because it was the language of trade and diplomacy when Muslims dominated the Silk Road and maritime Indian Ocean trade. Deborah Immanuel Look Arabs didn't invade Persia.I dont want to get into religion But Persia had great empire if Arabs would try to forcefully get into Persian land n establish their belief system than the the Arabs would all be killed by Persian army. That's the proof that Arabs never invaded Persia. They traded goods in Persian markets N that's hw the languages were traded to. Arabs use to work in Persia n study their just like Persians did in Iraq. No1 invaded any1.

Because I speak Hindustani and because India is between the two nations all the words were familiar to me. All the words that were common between Persian and Bengali on this channel were also familiar to me. I didn't know that Akhbar is the plural of Khabar woow. Akhbar means Newspaper in Hindustani. The guy mentioned about roti and said that there are also words that have come from Hindi so let me give an example there are in fact a lot of such words look at the word Cinta which means "to love" in Bahasa Indonesia, it is from Sanskrit and it means "to think" in Sanskrit but it means "to worry" in Hindi. keep in mind that c is pronounced like Ch in Bahasa Indonesia. To say aku cinta kamu would sound a lil out of place for Hindi speakers. The word Bahasa is from Sanskrit and it is transliterated as Bhasha. The word Sukha means happiness in Sanskrit and Suka means to like for eg: the Malayasian brother said Saya Suka makan Anggor. The word Bandar which is from Persian means Port and the Capital of Brunei is Bandar Serai Begawan. I loved this video. Terima Kasih.

syed moris yup... Our ancestors... Take everything from ancient traders... When Hinduism came... We inserted Sanskrit... Then Islam came... We took Arabic and Persian... Later when English colonization... We took English loan words... It's like mix and match... Hahahahaha In fact not only we took the loan words, but we also apply the writing system... We have kawi (Sanskrit like alphabet, but it's sooo ancient) , jawi (Arabic alphabet like Persian and Urdu), and rumi (Roman Alphabet like current Malaysian writing system) writing systems... Since English colonization we started using ABC in our writing system....😂

syed moris yup... There are some variation of Malay dialects in Malaysia... Which are... "northern states" "Kelantanese", "Perakian", "Negeri Sembilans", "Sarawakian", "Sabahan" and many more... Some malaysian Malays had Javanese and Bugis ancestry from Indonesia... Where the languages are very different to Malays.. Most understood dialect would be the "Kuala Lumpur's dialect"... Not to confuse with languages, Malaysian Chinese usually can speak in mandarin, hokkien, hakka, Cantonese and many other Chinese language/dialect, while Malaysian Indian usually can speak in Tamil, Punjabi, Malayalam, telegu and other Indian languages... East malaysian (malaysian Borneo) also have their own natives languages such as Iban, Kadazan, Melanau, Murut, Bajau, Bidayuh, and many more... Which more related to Tagalog and other Filipino languages... However we have a standard Bahasa Malaysia/malaysian language as our national language, English as a cumpolsory language to be taught at school since we are commonwealth nation... Arabic also widely taught in Muslim religious schools... Is good to know u will learn Malay, if u know Arabic, Sanskrit, and English you'll definitely spots those languages inside Malays vocabulary... Gudluck!! 😀

Labuhan/Labuan=Port in Malay, Bandar is Persian word, Animal=Haiwan=Arabic , but Malay=Binatang, Grave, Kubur=Arab Malay=Pusara, Arnab=Rabbit, Malay = Kelinci, Masjid(Mosque)=Balaisah. in Malay word "Surau" or place for Solat(Prayer) still used Native word, but sometime can called "Mussolah"from Arabic, They are many word in Malay/Old Malay we do not use it anymore, like example, Anta Permana=Infinity/Infiniti in Malay speling, "Captain" in Malay is Nakhoda, but we borrowed from English "Kapten" with Malay spelling, Pustika = Kristal, Dipertua=Presiden. it used in 1940s example "Dipertua UMNO mean Presiden UMNO/President of UMNO, Adipati=Governor or Head of Province(Kepala Daerah, Kepala=Head, Daerah=Province). some of own Malay-Austronesian word are rarely use or didn't used it anymore, same like few other world. Word for World in Malay are Dunia borrowed from Arabic, which Hindi-Urdu(Hindustani), Bengali, Turkish, Tatar, Persian used it. pure Malay word for "World or Dunia" is "Buana" or Banua, yes, Benua and Banua have common connection all it about land, Benua is huge land, when Austronesian want to explore and travel they left the Benua or Vanua in Austronesian/old Malay, go to Island. Vanuatu/Vanua-Tu is country name after word "Vanua" mean Land or homeland.

Not 'pustika' but 'mestika'. And it refers to a specific type of stone, which is called bezoar in English: en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bezoar 'Mestika' are found in the guts of some animals. It is also believed to be found in their heads, sometimes. Rock crystals and precious gemstones are called 'intan', 'permata', 'manikam', and 'ratna' in Malay.

Azhar Az Bandar is the root of the term "shahbandar" who was the noble in charge of tax collection at the ports. Early cities in the Malay world were ports- Banda Aceh, Bandar Melaka etc for instance. Kamus Dewan is modern Bahasa Melayu- pelabuhan literally means the port area of a city, but traditionally the whole city was both. Just that now people prefer to separate term

do differences between Brunei Malay and Peninsular Malaysian Malay. Also, it is not "Malaysian"- the language is spoken in four other countries and is official in three of them (Singapore has it as a national but not official language). Do not give a country essentially founded in 1957 ownership of a language that is over 500 years old.

The word news and the news are not Arabic,It is Persian and there was newspaper During the Achaemenid and a newspaper called " khabar " !! Many Persian words came to the Arabic, such as love, poetry, news, tea and many other words .Approximately 5,000 words from the ancient Iranian languages have entered the languages of the Semitic group such as Hebrew, Akad, and Arabic. If r بسیاری از واژه های پارسی به عربی راه پیدا کرد همانند عشق ، ادب ،خبر،چای و کندگ = عربی شده خندق بسیاری از واژه های دیگر .

Malay is Bani Malai from Nabi Ibrahim's third wife (her name is Malai) Malay live in Nusantara, convert to Islam after Hijrah( dakwah from Macca to Nusantara ) before that, some Malay is in Nabi Ibrahim's Religion and some Malay is Hindu Religion. (thats not india, thats a religion, same like Bali & Thailand Hindu/Buddha) Malay is 1st Muslim in Nusantara before Java & etc in Nusantara.. Malay Teach Java about Muslim after Java attacking Siam Budha(thats time, Malay & Siam in war) but Arab always teach us (Nusantara) time to time. some Malay married with Arab and some Malay Married with any Muslim in Malay place.thats why malay have many genetic. but still the 1st is from Malai.
