With director Stephen Maxwell Johnson’s High Ground arriving in America via Digital and On Demand this weekend, I recently spoke with Simon Baker about starring in the Australian film about the massacre of an Aboriginal Australian tribe in 1919. Written by Chris Anastassiades, Baker plays Travis, an ex-sniper from WWI that’s now a policeman in northern Australia. When a mission to talk with a local Aboriginal tribe ends in tragedy, Travis leaves in disgust, only to be forced back twelve years later to help hunt down an Aboriginal warrior attacking local settlers. But as the truth of what happened all those years ago comes to life, Travis becomes the hunted. High Ground also stars Callan Mulvey, Aaron Pedersen, Ryan Corr, Caren Pistorius, Jack Thompson, and introduces Jacob Junior Nayinggul, Witiyana Marika and Esmerelda Marimowa.
During the interview, Baker talked about why he wanted to be part of this film, why it’s okay to feel uncomfortable while watching, the importance of talking about our history, and the difficulty in making films about this subject matter. In addition, he talks about making L.A. Confidential and how he auditioned for the Ed Exley role that Guy Pearce landed, making Margin Call and working with such a great cast, how he’s never seen The Devil Wears Prada, why he’d like to make a film about someone that wants to get into politics, and a lot more.
Finally, as someone that didn’t know a lot about Australian history, I thought High Ground was extremely well made and pulls back the curtain on a dark chapter in Australian history. Definitely recommended.
Check out what Simon Baker had to say in the player above and below is exactly what we talked about and director Stephen Maxwell Johnson’s statement about the film.
Simon Baker:
When will he make another movie?
What TV series would he like to guest star on?
What movie or movies has he seen the most?
If he could get the financing for anything what would he make and why?
Why he’d like to make a film about someone that wants to get into politics.
What does he remember about making L.A. Confidential?
Talks about how he came close to landing the Ed Exley role that Guy Pearce ended up playing.
What does he remember about making Margin Call and working with such a great cast?
How he’s never seen The Devil Wears Prada.
Why did he want to be part of High Ground?
How he never learned what is depicted in High Ground in school.
How stories like High Ground are tough to get made.
Why it’s okay to feel uncomfortable watching the film.
How streaming is allowing more stories from around the world to be told.
Director Stephen Maxwell Johnson’s statement:
At the heart of High Ground is the tragic story of Frontier encounters and the missed opportunity between two cultures, black and white. High Ground was conceived as a story that would challenge accepted notions of the settlement of Australia. Faced with the myth of terra nullius the aim with the film is to create a new mythology and present a different perspective on how this country was made. It explores the themes of identity and culture and the attempts that were made to preserve and progress culture in the face of an overwhelming threat. High Ground is a story with mythic proportions with complexity and no easy answers. This story presents a view that there really is no such thing as settlement it’s all about conquest, it explores the way in which society is built and how connections are made between people and it exposes the shameful truth of our frontier history but rather than choosing to dramatize a specific historical event ‘High Ground’ draws on contact history from a variety of locations-a fiction to illustrate a deeper truth. High Ground is a powerful human drama, instilled with a strong sense of hope and fear, a story of treachery, heroism, sacrifice, freedom and love, misguided beliefs, an unequal struggle for power, and grief. But above all it is a story about the finding of one’s roots. My aim has been to entertain and immerse an audience in an environment teeming with unexpected threats, and to take them on a ride through an aspect of our history that is under-represented and hopefully encourage them to rethink the Australian story.

Simon is such an insightful, generous, articulate and intelligent human. Movie suggestion for Simon ... the original "Guess Who's Coming to Dinner" with Spencer Tracy, Katharine Hepburn and Sidney Poitier. Also, his emotional connection with Australia, his true love for his Austrailia is heartfelt and moving. Rare these days!

That is a good recommendation. I liked these below with some similar themes, true stories yet somewhat fictionalized to move movie plot lines. The Last King of Scotland. Colonialism story that left problems and then in comes a dictator that is worse. Mr. And Mrs. Loving, I saw the one with Hutton. Dances with Wolves. Costner produced this as I recall and many as I recall at the time thought it wasn't going to make it. Native Americans did comment they liked it because it depicted them more realistically as a people with a culture and life and family like other humans.
@InterestedToReply

Also one other I would recommend is The Great White Hope. Also a more realistic view, but at an earlier time period. It is based on real people as I recall although I'm sure that some of this was fictionalized.

Wow what a geniune interview/man--Love his humanity..Would totally wish to understand his approach to the potentially magic of acting..Of course as an American am very touched by how he talks about High Ground ..and how people who are different can be so real-and we need to sit with our reactions. I really believe we human beings are all very similar underneath the skin..Also adore The Mentalist!!!!!! Thank-you so much for this great interview!!!

Simon, “Boy swallows Universe” is wonderful, & I’ve already watched it 3 times because it is so rich but also real in the sense that people swear & get into trouble & have messy lives, & you surprised me with your character as a drunk, with the whole of your house filled with books. Right away I thought there is more to this character & I had hope for you. The kids who were the main part of the film especially Eli, his acting was amazing. Bryon Brown was a wonderful gruff teacher or babysitter, who told Eli about prison & the nasty stuff that goes on there. Great film & great subject matter. Thx

I'm not sure of your ages, but I see it the way Simon does. He's a child of the 70s and 80s as myself was except I'm a little older by a few years. It is the way things were taught then and I'd say in any country with European colonialism history with some variation on the historic events. Same in the US as mentioned here, except Native Americans. Their history was left out in our schooling years here as well back then. They were depicted to be savages and uneducated and scarey. But that's not a real true depiction. They were just not as advanced a civilization as Europe. If you looked at the way they treated criminals in England during the Renaissance, it looked about as savage and perhaps more so than any Native American.

I think Simon's role could have been written more skilfully. He's got incredible acting skills , and the final scenes of the movie don't do him good. His facial expressions were uncanny in the scene when he was hand-cuffed to his bed after being shot and hurt. I think the writer should have thrown in some lines for Simon. The same thing applies to his final scene where he dies. He just calls out the boy's real aboriginal name and that's it!? The movie is great,and treads on dangerous ground regarding the issue of racism and colonizing Australia. But when it comes to giving Simon Baker a solid role to fully demonstrate his acting skills, I think the writer and director failed at doing it.

How about this would be a positively horrendous time to do a movie about politics, either Australian or American. People are so polarized and heart felt either one way or another, That a complex movie would just turn them off. I know it would me. Plus it wasn't Australians that pushed back the Aborigines, it was England, The English who colonized every country and pushed back all natives on every continent and the only country that won it's freedom was the US.(granted France was involved). Mr Baker seems to be very English in his love of Australia and not so American even though that's where he made his fame and money Does Simon Baker look in the mirror and not want to be handsome? Does growing roughage make him feel better ? He has a twisted interior.

You are obviously American Annie. Just for the record, it wasn’t just the English (aka Great Britain) who colonized “every country.”. Try adding Spain, France, Portugal, Holland, Belgium and Italy. The Australians pushed back the aboriginal people just the way the Americans and Canadians did - and still do. Simon Baker loves Australia because he IS Australian - not English.
@annieklepper4120
@annieklepper4120 2 жыл бұрын
@@jackiehamilton9375 Yes, you are correct, The point I was making is that Aussies still are completely attached to the royals in England who hold them hostage and they still bow. Even though they were criminals sent to a penal colony. Yes, other countries colonized, including the US and Simon baker is welcome to love his country, just as we do ours. But really we'd like Simon to come back and entertain us again.

It begs to ask the question, when is the right time? He seems Australian to me. And being an American, he enjoys the same freedom of speech we do with rights to comment about what he thinks. You can find it in the constitution that we Americans say we believe in.
