1. The Boxer - I read a comment from someone on quora that a commenter had a meeting with Paul Simon and he said that Paul Simon couldn't help gushing about his meeting with Mohammed Ali who was a great sports hero to him, so his love of boxing must have contributed to his eloquence, emotional resonance and compositional excellence on this song. Again the trippy drifting hypnotic element of desperation and separation from society drenches this composition which has a cinematic breadth and scope. 2. Sounds of Silence- I won't ever forget the first scene in The Graduate when the foreboding beauty of this song is the backdrop for Benjamin coming home from university and totally befuddled with no sense of professional direction as he makes his way to meet his parents. An apocalyptic futuristic lyrical soundscape has never sounded so enticingly trippy with the electric version feeling like one of the first fabulous forays into darker side of psychedelia. 3. Like a Rock - Hiding in my room deep within my womb I touch no one and no one touches me is one of the most erotic renderings of lovelessness. The beautifully melancholy Calypso sounding guitar creates an ironic counterpoint because the invocation of the lush and prodigal tropics is juxtaposed to the barren island of solitary rock on which the protagonist of the song exists. 4. Mrs. Robinson- Maybe it is because this song is so associated with what was one of my early favorite movies that I liked it so much but I don't know a song that fits a movie better. Love that he uses the sports reference of Joe Dimaggio and the intricate and low key groovy guitar with the descending beginning, memorable melody and wide vocal variety are so memorable and fit the spirit of the times so beautifully. 5. America- the mix of spacy almost psychedelic jazz crescendoes with soft spoken folk interludes with a spattering percussion creates an unsettling sense of hope mixed with desperation while the singer seems on the verge of poverty with the real estate stuffed in his bag and no cigarettes to smoke after feeling a profound sense of being lost. Favorite line is the one in the gabardine suit is a spy/ Be careful his bo-tie is really a camera gives a sense of a humourous hallucination in one sense but presents the possibility the singer is preoccupied with the paranoia of communist which was prevalent at the time or perhaps is merely meant to suggest they are coming of a trip during their bus trip across America the empty and aching and I don't know presents the confessional emotional state typical of this condition. Also love the backing soaring harmonies of Art near the end. 6. Homeward Bound- Has to be one of their most influential, heart breaking and visually memorable songs immediately subsequent songs like Leaving on a Jet Plane come to Mind. Everyday is an endless stream of cigarettes and magazines is one of my favorite lines in a fuitle attempt to escape from the heartbreaking ache of homesickness. 7. Hazy Shade of Winter- I like the Bangles version, but this is the best one in my opinion. It gets down to the gritty conflicting emotion of rapidly vanishing youth and its equivalency with the ever changing seasons and the urgency to connect with humanity while time is still left. I like the horn to go with the Salvation Army band. One of their most poetic songs lyrically with one of their best guitar licks, but it it too short or it would be higher on the list. 8. The Only Living Boy in New York - This is like eavesdropping on the daily thoughts of the singer in The Boxer, beautifully dreamy main and backing harmonies, Hopeful yet desperate, soaring but diving into directionless the person is like a mirror of the song's evanescent reverie that passes by far quicker than the perceived playing time. One of their most hypnotic songs along with The Boxer in my opinion. Like a mix of America and the Boxer. 9. Keep the Customer Satisfied- Great lyrical song Some Favorite lines: Everywhere I go Iget slandered / libeled / I hear words I never heard in the Bible and Deputy Sheriff said to me what you come here for boy / You better get your bags and flee you're in trouble and now your headed into War. Fascinating for the extended length of the rhymed verses and for the duality of the meaning which suggests that the war veteran or the newly drafted soldier is just as unwelcome coming home as the hippy is. Great crescendo in the song that peaks with the woodwind conclusion. Catchy melody. 10. Bridge over Troubled Waters- It should probably be higher but I like the rougher and more rocking and neurotic edges and textures in the songs above not to mention the trippy feel still a great song. I would place the second half of this song higher especially from Sail on Silver Girl harmonies till the end. This song makes me realize that I actually prefer Paul Simon as the lead vocalist most of the time with Art providing prominent harmony or the soaring vocal embellishments which are marvelous at the end of this song and at the end of America though not as pronounced.

A Most Peculiar Man has one of my favorite moments in music "And all the people said, what a shame that he's dead. But wasn't he a most peculiar man". I interpret it has a calling out of the hypocrisy when everybody talks poorly about someone all the way until their death at which point people will claim that it was a tragedy.

ah what a treat, I grew up listening to these guys and they are an institution. And rightly so. So many classics, American classics right up there with anything ever written by anyone. One of my top 10 artists with 9 songs in my top 1000: 3. Bridge over troubled water (can any song be more perfect and emotional and gripping???) 24. For Emily, whenever I may find her (especially the version from their greatest hits album, the vocal on this is angelic and passionate like literally no other song ever) 46. America (makes me love the country even if I have never been there) 146. Kathy's song (pure poetry) 202. The Boxer (an epic, beautiful lyrics and sweeping chorus) 500. Scarborough Fair/Canticle (the interweaving lyrics are just spellbinding) 561. The Dangling Conversation (Middle class melodrama) 673. Homeward Bound (another timeless classic. Again the Greatest Hits version is the definitive) 886. The Only living boy in New York (dreamy and majestic)

Not one of my all time favourite acts but responsible for some great songs, nonetheless. BOOKENDS is a solid album while BRIDGE OVER TROUBLED WATER, their final album together, was a monster hit that dominated the early '70s (as did albums by Carol King & James Taylor). 10. "Bridge Over Troubled Water": (like McCartney's "Yesterday", you think it pre-dates the writer and will surely outlive us all); this eased out the pretentious but hilarious "I Am a Rock" on my list; 9. "Only Living Boy in New York": a dreamlike meditation of Simon seeing his partner ("Tom" of their earlier Tom & Jerry incarnation) slip away. Art was filming CATCH-22 in Mexico during the recording sessions; 8. "So Long, Frank Lloyd Wright": another dreamscape, this time sung by Art... "so long"; 7. "Fakin' It": as lauded as their sensitive, poetic side was, I preferred their 'rockers'. The spoken-word part is a groovy effect (is "Mr. Leitch" really Donovan?) while the slap-chop ending anticipates my favourite S&G single; 6. "At the Zoo": Simon's close-mic'd, laughing delivery and the shifting dynamics show off producer Roy Halee's ear for detail; Paul's right about hamsters too; 5. "Hazy Shade of Winter": second only to The Bangles' remake but still a great rocker; 4. "America": another song ripe for remake (thanks to the guitartastic Yes version), the original retains plenty of drama thanks to those Davy Graham-inspired acoustic riffs, organ washes & 16 tambourines; 3. "For Emily, Whenever I May Find Her": best heard on the live remake for the 1972 GREATEST HITS compilation, this is Art as his most romantic; 2. "Scarborough Fair/Canticle": perhaps their greatest achievement and a gorgeous blending of Simon's woodshedding trip to England and Garfunkel's classical-inspired counterpoint; 1. "Cecilia": couldn't get enough of this single back in the day and it still brings a smile; great instrumental break and a foreshadow of where Simon's muse would take him. A glorious way to (sort of) close off the duo's partnership!

Simon & Garfunkel vie with Bob Dylan as the musical voice of their generation of Americans coming of age in the Sixties--they certainly provided some of the most iconic music of the decade. Here is my selection of ten favorites, listed as much as possible in alphabetical order by title: --"America" (jaunty optimism segues into pensive melancholy in this generational portrait) --"The Boxer" (one of the more robust, muscular efforts by the duo, with memorable imagery and storytelling) --"Cecilia" (bittersweet reflections encapsulated in energetic music) --"Cloudy" (lovely and gentle, just like the scenes described in the song) --"El Cóndor Pasa (If I Could)" (stern folk philosophy wedded to haunting indigenous sounds) --"For Emily, Whenever I May Find Her" (so short yet rapturously, heartbreakingly beautiful) --"Homeward Bound" (arguably the duo's single most iconic song, heartfelt, earthy, and comforting) --"Kathy's Song" (delicate declaration of love, quiet, unforced, sincere) --"Scarborough Fair/Canticle" (beloved folk song made uniquely their own by the duo's musical alchemy) --"Wednesday Morning, 3 A.M." (an overlooked gem, my favorite from the duo's debut LP, so touching in its hushed yet urgent beauty)

Oh dear. The Disturbed version of 'Sounds of Silence' is on my TouTube favorites! That reference to Joe DiMaggio alone gets 'Mrs. Robinson' in my Top 5. Because of a certain ex 'For Emily (Whenever I May Find Her)' is easily Top 3. And 'The Boxer' is almost certainly my Numero Uno. When Paul Simon is 'on' his lyrics crackle thru the acoustic guitar and The Boxer is a great example of that. And I agree that Art's vocal on 'Bridge Over Troubled Water' is a highlight of Pop music. Good video guys! Keep 'em coming...

Great post, as always. I have always loved them and thought for sure I was going to dive deep for my list. Didn't happen, although there are plenty to choose from. Cheers! 10. Bridge Over Troubled Water - Like you said, Art nailed it and should have had more opportunities like this. 9. Hazy Shade of Winter - I always think of The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock when I hear this song. And Susanna Hoffs... 8. For Emily, Wherever I May Find Her - Lyrics border on cheesy, but hey, I was dating a girl named Emily.. 7. The Boxer - A great underdog song. 6. The 59th Street Bridge Song - Hard to be sad after listening to this. 5. Homeward Bound - As kids, my brother had the 45 and we learned all the lyrics except for the "In shades of mediocrity" line. Good times. 4. The Sound of Silence - I think I prefer the "rock" version better, but either way it's a masterpiece. 3. Mrs. Robinson - Yes, it's been played to death, but that's for a reason. 2. Cecilia - Jubilation! 1. Scarborough Fair/Canticle - Absolutely perfect, haunting, timeless.

Yes in their early incarnation did a great version of America, it only appeared on single and samplers, not any of their LPs. Whoever covered Sound of Silence should be buried right next to the dilettantes who slaughtered the Who's Behind Blue Eyes (both are candidates for the list of worst cover versions of great songs). And just check any folk version of Scarborough Fair to see how great the S&G cover really is.
