It is obvious from this speach, Harris does not want to solve the housing crisis. If he did, he would not even be talking about building new houses because that is not the problem. The problem is FG wants house prices to remain high, so even if they could build enough housing units to end the crisis, it wouldn`t because that would mean house prices would fall. A fall in house prices is a big no no for FG because they borrowed 200 billion euro to re-inflate the bubble that popped in 2008. If house prices were to fall, they would have nothing, not even high house prices to show for that 200 billion. But we will still owe the money. Falling prices will result in negative equity which will result in people defaulting by choice. This will result in house prices falling further until eventually, price discovery is achieved. Building new houses is not the answer. What if someone didn`t want a new house but an old one? Keeping the bubble in existing housing stock inflated, by easing borrowing requirements and other shenanigans is only postponing the inevitable. We know our economy is exposed to external risks (of which there are many). When a powerful downturn in the economy comes, no government will be able to keep this farce going. House prices will implode and this time, you will not be able to do anything about it. My point is, wouldn`t it be better to allow market forces solve the problem now, than wait for market forces to solve it whether you like it or not? If so, why not pass a law to allow any bank to sell any distressed mortgage to any willing buyer and give them protection against litigants who want to prevent them? That way, a young couple who want to buy a house can do so and the non paying occupiers would have to get out. Nobody could accuse the Gardaí of being corporate enforcers when they are merely clearing the way for a hard working couple to move into their new home. It would also discourage people defaulting just because the value of their house may be going down. How does it make sense, that Irish banks cannot capitalize on what they are owed but have to sell distressed mortgages to foreign vulture funds that then get what Irish banks are owed? We are shareholders in the banks, not that we wanted to be, but FG forced us to be shareholders so the least FG should do is let the banks be banks and foreclose in a timely and efficient manner without interference from courts. The borrowers signed the dotted line, they didn`t pay, so they should get kicked out. Simple. Tell Mr Hall to put that in his pipe and smoke it.

Writing as I listen… Rewriting the script from the start. Trying to make Varadkars legacy related to his comments in the Oval Office.. and piggy-backing on the same himself, now. This would all be hilarious if the empty words on ‘action’ weren’t so tragic. Time will tell, once more. He spoke directly towards small business owners on the back of shutting down the country and thus shutting down so many small businesses, felt rich, also. They didn’t do much for the older citizens during that time either as he makes further pledges to them. “FG is the party of rural Ireland” - say no more. 😅 My overall impression of his presentation here was that of someone who is clearly excited to be leader - as I’ve never seen him as animated. I will absolutely be happy to see the ratification of the rights of people with disabilities which is long overdue, but again, time will tell. One can’t help but be cynical as well as hopeful, but then again, as he says, FG is the party of hope… apparently. I was waiting for him to talk about Immigration, and thought surely he’d close then with talking about the unhoused, or addiction, or maybe I missed it? He did well overall in my estimation all things considered and even showed some personality and humour at the end there.
