Actually if Haaland played like Messi did in the World Cup and Norway won, then I would say yes Halland deserves it. However can you really see Haaland playing like that (esp given he is a striker)? No! So completely the right decision and you're point just proved it!

Correction - This award is a popularity contest between Top performers of the season. I am a Messi fan. Messi is the best player not because he won most Ballon D'or he is the best because no one else can produce magical moments as often as he does for this many years. Some of the plays he makes leave you wondering how did he do that.

In all the finals he played last season, Haaland had ZERO goal contribution. That's a fact. He did not carry his team when the stakes were high, he was carried. And it's an absolute disgrace that you undermine Messi's world cup to just 7 games of football, Simon. Those 7 games have a 4 year buildup, not to mention the hopes and expectation of millions. When you put that shirt on, you represent your country, not some oil merchant's portfolio diversifying investment. There was much much more at stake, and he performed like a GOD. There's nobody else you could give the award to.

Haaland in 8 semi-finals & finals for Man City: 0 G/A vs. Liverpool (Community Shield), 0 G/A vs. Sheffield Utd (FA Cup), 0 G/A vs. Man Utd (FA Cup), 0 G/A vs. Real Madrid (UCL) 0 G/A vs Inter (UCL), 0 G/A vs. Arsenal (Community Shield) & 0 G/A vs. Sevilla (UEFA Super Cup) He heavily relies on the performance of others and I would argue Mbappe is a better overall player.

Simon talking drivel as per, Rossi won the ballon d’or in 82 he played like 10 games, lothar matthaus won it 90 cos he won the World Cup, zidane won it in 98 cos he won the World Cup, R9 won it in 2002 he was injured for 90% of the season, cannavaro won it in 06 despite Juventus getting relegated for match fixing cos he won World Cup in 06, im fed up of people pretending that the ballon d’or hasn’t done this before.

that doesn't mean it isn't right. at no point did he state those ballon dor winners deserved it but the issue is, cannavaro, r9, zidane, all did greater things in the world cup than messi did. matthaus was also the best midfielder on the planet and won the world cup. there's a difference to every player u mentioned since they actually did crazy things

@tevildo45 the whole point of my post is to say some of those players also didn't deserve it, but again they had insane feats. ronaldo winning the world cup in such a fashion got him the world cup, messi didn't do anything near his level in that very world cup so u are therefore missing how analytical thinking works. messi didn't do anything special in any of his games besides being the base of the team and have the fans to support all the relentless pressing from other players

We have had plenty of world class players: Kane, Rooney, gerrard, scholes, Lampard, Ashley Cole, Rio Ferdinand, alan shearer, David beckham, Paul gascoigne, Michael Owen But we never had a forward player like Ronaldo, messi or other Ronaldo. Did he win a treble? Listen we love Messi but even the most hard-core fan can admit this was more of a sympathy award than anything else. He's one of two of the greatest players of all time and they should have given him a lifetime achievement award for winning everything in his career but was not the best over 12 months

To the guy who's won 7 BallonDors already? 63 goal + assist vs 67 for Haaland across club and country, 3 trophies including scoring in the domestic cup final and dominating the World Cup. There was no sympathy here. Having said that, I would understand Haaland winning it, but it isn't the 'one guy clear by a mile' situation people are making it to be.. When Messi or Ronaldo would win it previously - people like Muller or Villa did not have the stats and dominance domestically or even the onus of carrying their team. Yes, this is based on narrative. And Messi had a strong one. But also the stats to back it up.

My only arguement for Leo or anymore doing well in WC is that if a player like Leo doesn’t deliver in WC but does extremely well throughout the year, people will always question and rightly that he didn’t deliver at biggest stage. So when you do deliver at biggest stage, it shouldn’t be belittled.

Messi won the Golden Ball at the world cup. He already received his accolade. What else did he do that year that made him to the best player in the world? Win a league that PSG has won for a decade without him. Getting bounced in the quarterfinals from CL? So what if he got his missing trophy? Simon bringing up perhaps a one off award for Messi reminded me of the super Ballon D'or that Di Stefano won. I'm not English but England have definitely produced world class players consistently. They just don't produce Ballon d'Or level players. Gerrard, Lampard, Scholes, Beckham, Terry, Ferdinand, Rooney, Owen, Kane, Ashley Cole... were all world class. There were just players from Brazil, France, Argentina, Spain, etc. that were better. I think Bellingham is the 1st player England have had in a long time that's a legitimate Ballon d'Or candidate and he's at a club very capable of promoting him for it. English clubs are also not very good at sponsoring Ballon d'Or candidates. Spanish and Italian clubs historically work behind the scenes to promote their best candidate. As a Madrid fan, I know that we tell journalists to vote for our best candidate. If we have multiple players in contention, we will push all our efforts on promoting the best guy.

I don't think Kane could've won a Ballon d'Or at Madrid cos Ronaldo was there and I can't imagine him doing what Benzema did in that 2022 campaign. Outside of Messi and Ronaldo, I've never seen a player carry a team through a UCL tournament the way Benzema did that season. It was insane. But I think if Kane joined Madrid this season, with Bellingham, Vini, and this ridiculous midfield, he could win a Ballon d'Or for sure. At Bayern, it's much harder.

I believe most of the players that he rattled off were / are brilliant players but I don't really know about world class. It's a funny one, and the term world class is probably no longer even relevant in the current game. I mean are Pele , Maradona, Messi , Ronaldo, Cruyff, Best and a few others going to be the only ones we can EVER call world class?? I think the term has had its day and is very open to interpretation. Messi is no doubt one of the greatest, if not the greatest and most gifted to ever lace a boot, we can probably leave it there imo.

The Ballon D'or considers the 22/23 season. Messi moved to inter Miami in June, after the end of that season. Only his performace with PSG and with Argentina were considered for the award. Besides, critizising him for moving to Miiami for money when he rejected a billion contract offer from Saudi is rediculous. Of course, he's gonna receive a huge salary, but I think he decided to go to MLS due to his family. Miami is one of the cities from the US with a big southamerican population. Spanish is more spoken than English there. He went there to live more calm

Like times magazine select the most influential person in the past year and there should be no duplicate but for football, I think Messi showed us the art of football, 7 matches in the world cup that influence millions of football watches. I watched the final match between Argentina／ France in Hk and when it came to final penalty kick, lt was 4o'clock am but even my wife didn't sleep because the match is so exited and so dramatically came to the end. We even watched the ceremony to witness the cup presentation with tears and clapped for Messi. He really gives us the art of football and even a story of struggle. What a memorable match that you may miss to see and can't see in your rest of life. If you say you watch the French Ligue 1 for a whole year to find a genius that should crown the golden cup, trust me, Simon. you won't and waste your time!

I've watched every WC tournament since Italia 1990. We clapped for West Germany then, we clapped for Brazil in USA 1994. We clapped when France won the tournament in 1998. Cannavaro(2006), R9(2002), Zedane(1998), Romario( Fifa world player of the year 1994) all won cause of the world cup. R9 didnt play for 3 yrs for until the WC but won R9 was even player of the tournament in 1998 but Zedane won it, Why? Cause France won the final, Modric won in 2018 for unlikely getting Croatia to the final so lets be clear here the WC has had the biggest say in WC yrs as to who wins. In 2010 Casillas,Xavi,Iniesta & Villa split the votes amongst each other so much since no one could definitively say their were best in the Spanish squad and that is why Messi won. In 2014 Neur was Germanys best hence the 2nd ballon finish in rankings but as simon just said they dont like awarding goalies that award, those are the only times the best world cup players lost, also Messi in 2014 with Barca was injured and out of form the whole season but him getting to the final in the WC got him a 3rd place finish in the Ballon dor rankings. WC trumps all tournaments that is a precedent set a long time ago, its just Messi and CR7 were so good they upset that trend.

Simon’s point on a separate award would’ve been a nice touch. The Best awards did something similar with Ronaldo breaking the international goal record. I think that would’ve been a great thing to do. Then they would’ve isolated Messi’s achievement and they could’ve ended the ceremony like that. I do think Haaland did more over the course of a season which is what the award is for.

The number of Man City players in the top 10 of the Ballon D'Or list shows that it was a collective effort that was recognized. Rodri and Kevin De Bruyne were as important to Man City if not more than Haaland was. Surely, that should convince you that on an individual basis, Messi has at least a right to winning the Ballon D'Or, at least as much as Haaland. If not, well, thanks for your opinion, Simon. 'I disagree' is my opinion and I'm convinced on the contrary.

I think haaland or messi could have won it and ir wont bother me, but the people that say messi didn't deserve just because of the world cup I would ask them if they also thought cannavaro 2006, Ronaldo 2002, Zidane 1998, Romario 1994 or Mathaus 1990 didn't deserve to win based on their performance in the world cup only? If they say they did agree then I understand their logic, bit if they say they did deserve to win the award then they are just messi haters and hypocrites

Ronaldo was the best player at that time but he should not have won the award simply due to him not playing enough matches that year due to injury. Cannavaro is a whole different story, brilliant player who had a fantastic season and a great World Cup however the award should not have gone to him simply due to the calciopoli scandal.

The best player in the year is the one with the most MOTM in the season. In European Top League, Haaland got 6, Mbappe got 7, De Bruyne 13....and guess who got the most? Messi, 14. We havent counted the MOTM in WC.

I don't understand why Messi winning Ballon D'Or makes people bring back the fact that Iniesta didn't win it in 2010. It's so understood that Iniesta was not star player he players exceptionally well but so did David villa and Xavi whereas Messi was behind everything that Argentina did. He created he scored he made others score he was outrageously spectacular and most importantly he was man of the Tournament. I don't understand where is the disconnect.

What many people fail to understand, is that Messi is (so much) than a mere goal scorer. Messi is tasked with being the key player in the build-up and the pivotal link between the midfield and attacking transitions. He's also tasked with being the main creator of chances for his teammates and, as if that wasn't enough, he's tasked with also destroying/opening defences and scoring goals. And truth be told: he performs all those tasks with world class proficiency. People talk about Messi failing in the UCL with PSG. Oh well... PSG has been a disaster-class club for years now. Collectively, they have been dreadful.. and, to make things worse, some of their biggest names were either injured or in bad shape when Messi was there. But look objectively at the (individual) performance of the player: Messi was PSG's best performer for several months, and the guy who was behind (most of) the best attacking moves of the team. I lost count how many times Messi produced excellent assists which were squandered by his teammates, Mbappé in particular. Regardless of PSG's failures as a team, Messi did his job and he did it very well. No wonder he was Ligue 1's best playmaker (plus, one of the highest goal scorers), and the official numbers don't even reflect the fact that Messi was the player involved in most of the direct and indirect goalscoring chances created. The inconvenient truth is: Individual trophies should be awarded based on the INDIVIDUAL, and not on the COLLECTIVE. But most people's minds are formatted to give great importance to the secondary criteria, which is the COLLECTIVE achievements.

While also winning the treble . And then you have another player who had 40 goal contributions while playing in the SIXTH best league in the world and you think it's comparable ? Then he went on to score 7 in the WC ( 4 of which were penalties ) You are basing your entire decision off one game . The world cup final . Because if France win , not a single person on earth would be saying Messi deserves it . Not even you You should really check your bias because you are basing the entire award on a single game

@@dsvp4825A little correction, Ligue 1 was in top 5 European leagues (last season). Halaand played in a better league for SURE and won both PL/UCL. However Halaand had only one MOTM performance in UCL and did little to nothing when it mattered the most (final/semi final of UCL/FAcup). We all know that WC is the pinnacle in Football and Messi won it while being the best player of the tournament, had MOTM in every knockout stage and in the final as well (5 in total). Penalties or not they still count as goals. That's like saying Halaand should not have been nominated for Ballon d'or beacuse most of his goals were tap ins. That one "single" game (the final of WC) is the most important game there is for any Footballer , that game decided the Ballon d'or winner and the GOAT status for Messi. If France would have won then Mbappe would be the Ballon d'or winner.

Look throughout history. Look at the greatest player in the world cup and who got the ballon d'or that year PRE Messi/Ronaldo, there's a pattern of players who had great WCs and won the ballon D'or. And if England weren't to win the WC then as a fan of football I wanted Lionel Messi to win it, it's a fitting end to an astonishing career

There is no way, based on the criteria to win a ballon d'or that messi was the best player In the world for the calendar year, and if you bring the fact that he dragged Argentina to a world cup, M bappe had a better world cup than messi.. he top scored, he was the most influential player for France and he was also unbeaten in the world cup, messi was a ghost against Saudi Arabia, The BALLON D'OR is a joke!

People who think Messi wasn’t the best in the World Cup didn’t actually watch the games or don’t fully understand football. Messi is not just a goal scorer, he was their primary playmaker. When the team is in trouble and can’t progress the ball up to pitch, Messi drops deep, turns and plays it forward or dribbles through a few players. He also happens to be the one that plays the final pass and also gets on the score sheet more often than not. Argentina played messi ball. All the other pieces around him worked their socks off and Messi paid them back with decisive moments.

England have produced many a world class player over the years, particularly throughout the golden generation; Rooney, Gerrard, Lampard, Scholes, Terry, Ferdinand, Ashley Cole. Add to that the more recent players of Kane and Walker, I don't think there's any doubt that we've produced our fair share of world class players over the years, they may not have performed but the talent has undoubtedly been there

Every argument that was made for Messi to win, could’ve been used for Mbappe to win. He scored a hat trick in the final, and arguably along with Griezmann carried France to the final. I’m a United fan, and Haaland scoring a record amount of goals and winning a treble in his first season was a unique achievement. Messi has been FIFAs blue eyed boy for so long now, so they were always going to award it to him

Well Lineker, Shilton, Beardsley, Barnes, Keegan, Brooking, Hoddle, Robson, Hateley, Waddle, Gascoigne, Ince, Platt, Shearer, Adams, Seaman, McManaman, Sheringham, Beckham, G. Neville, Joe Cole, Scholes, Ferdinand, Rooney, Gerrard, Lampard, Kane, Ashley Cole, and Walker. Most won top trophies, or at the least excelled at big clubs. They often also played for some of the world's elite clubs, like Real Madrid, Man United, Barca, Liverpool, Bayern, etc.
