it's called being diplomatic:-) he could have been a polititian. ( also , myself included, the truth is musicians dont' know much about conducting, so they focus on personality and as of late looks and youth more and more. it's sad...at least we got lucky with Sir Rattle)

He is belong to Maestro.Karajanism😼, as like to do with Nietzsche's "Thus Spoke Zarathustra". It leans towards a true Dionysian-Apollo amalgam nihilism, the polar opposite of Nietzsche's "Thus Spoke Zarathustra," which is a false gloom and dampness. He leans towards the true Dionysian-Apollo amalgam nihilism, the polar opposite of Nietzsche's "Thus Spoke Zarathustra," which is a false, gloomy, and humid thing. And that's fine. He's not a fake.

I discovered Sir Simon when I was a freshman in college (just as he was blossoming with CBSO) and he has been a BIG part of my musical journey thru life til this day. He is power, passion, love, inspiration, wisdom, thoughtfulness all wrapped up in a true musical genius. Thank you Sir Simon for all the wonderful music, and looking forward to the next chapter.

6:18 Simon Rattles says: - "Our world divides into people who are supremely confident and those who have doubts every day. I am on the doubts every day team. Probably just as well. It means you don't take too much for granted .But of course it makes it hard. This is a hard profession and it doesn't get any easier. You have to get used to that and you have to do the best you can and realize that that is the best you can do." One wonders if he is speaking purely about the world of music or the world in general. Whichever way how could one speak more profoundly?
@DodderingOldMan
@DodderingOldMan 8 жыл бұрын
+David Watermeyer Honestly? I don't think that's profound at all; I think it's a drastic simplification of human nature. No one is supremely confident all the time. Even the most confident of people experience plenty of self-doubt, unless they a genuinely psychopathic.

With Rattle, you also get Shake and Roll, at least according to the prophetic sources of 1910's 'Baby' Franklin Seals and 1954's Big Joe Turner, along with Bill Haley & His Comets. I'm glad to hear Bruckner's 7th performed in Taipai, as the rising sun opening melody of its first movement mirrors the sunrise over the Pacific Ocean that the East Asia nations experience.

I'm always amazed that classical music seems to be so much more appreciated in Taiwan. In Germany it's a small "elite" that even bothers to take it's time and get acquainted with it. I wonder why that is.

Leben Sie in Taiwan bzw.

I was very excited and satisfied by the election of Sir Simon Rattle like music director of Das Berliner Philharmoniker, but after all these years a great feeling of dissatisfaction and disappointment made think how wrong were the musicians picking up a musician never took the orchestra to the level left by Abbado forget to Karajan. A sadly lost time! Bad Beethoven, Brahms, Schubert, Schumann...

Ivan Hernandez Your comment interests me a great deal. You have said much, & I appreciate it. But could you elucidate, perhaps w specific examples, say (& I’m just giving possible examples) his Mahler, Beethoven, Mozart, Bach truly bad?? Is this what you mean? What I mean is what is he lacking? Depth, musicianship, what, exactly? Thanks in advance for considering my request. PS. Do you like Carlos Kleiber? PPS. Do you like Peter Sellars? What about the dramatised Bach Passions? The public we hear say they were incredibly moved. I personally find it abit distracting from the music being played.

I disagree . I liked Abado very much but Karajan no . He squandered much, making films of his own conducting, hired young singers and burned them out rather than more seasoned singers with minds of their own. He was not particularly communit minded and his recordings are a little dull : loved legato and overdid it . I'm sure you disagree but that's my point . Tastes differ. Rattle his beethoven is a bit fiery for traditionalists . I love his Brahms Mahler esp symphonies 2 and 9 and his Benjamin Britten is superb .

"His ears are enormous... like an elephant," inferring the size of the apparatus equals superior quality. At first, I was skeptical - a seemingly ignorant understanding of sound... and then I ate my words very soon after. Elephants indeed have a huge sonic range, can hear frequencies 20 times lower than humans and are only second to the moth with a hearing frequency of up to 300 kiloherz, hearing 150 times more than us and can even hear 100 herz above a bat. So anyway, Rattle, you must hear pretty damned well!

A bit like my own view of Rattle. He is an outstanding director of musicians and a superb orchestral trainer. As an exponent of composers, musical architect or interpreter of the great orchestral works it's a different story. Next to Karajan and Klemperer (or "living greats" like Haitink or Barenboim), he just doesn't compare.
@composerguy1437
@composerguy1437 6 жыл бұрын
Next to Klemperer?? Really? Rattle can conduct circles around Klemperer. Even before his stroke, Klemperer couldn't touch The Rite of Spring (or anything by Stravinsky), and couldn't handle anything after the late Romantics.

@Composer Guy. Klemperer's repertoire may have been more limited but he excelled in what he did. I'm not convinced that Rattle is anywhere near as good as the hype would suggest. An example would be the recent video (Y.T.) of his "Firebird" with the L.S.O. - quite ordinary and pales beside my favourite Ozawa/ODP. Another example was a recording of Sibelius 2nd symphony which left me totally underwhelmed. Kletski's recording with the Philharmonia blew him into the weeds! I'm certain he can give outstanding performances at times but for me he is very inconsistent.

@16:10 ~ 16:40 Well, until not that long ago, I have been wondering why Sergiu Celibidache had always kept telling that conductors would be the most ignorant people in the music field, like on this interview kzfaq.info/get/bejne/idF9eK5o2pbKcX0.html And nobody could give me any explanation. But now I have just understood why. So when Simon Rattlesnake means, Mainland Chinese would have no interest in classical music, this is not true as anyone can see: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/h7SSoMygrp7JYYU.html kzfaq.info/get/bejne/j9Gaps-FvN6lYIU.html It is just, that it is CHINESE classical music, not WESTERN classical music. But I suspect Simon Rattlesnake to speak with a forked tongue and I have the bad feeling that behind his words, we have to see a kind of white supremacist western superiority complex, whose words' true signification is "Taiwanese are good people, it must be cultural and this is why they are so westernized and thus have interest in our western superior repertoire, whereas the Mainland Chinese are not westernized and thus, ar e dumbasses!" So, Sir Rattlesnake, you have proven yourself to be among the most ignorant conductors in the music field!

Im having a hard time to make an agreement in BBC's documentary to that conclusion that he now is the best just because the best have died long ago. Maybe the making of a maestro would fit better or the life of Simon Rattle. And even with the orchestra?? Its just one of the best but not the best. Try competing with VIENNA, HARVARD & JULLIARD. Furthermore, making comparison between LEONARD BERNSTEIN and SIMON RATTLE, I would vote for Bernstein to be the best regardless of generation.
@Danielboy40
@Danielboy40 6 жыл бұрын
Maybe you're right about Simon Rattle, he may not be THE best but he certainly is among the best. But you're definitely not right about the orchestra. The Berlin phil are undoubtedly the best orchestra in the world. Vienna and maybe new york rank somewhere at the top of the list, but Berlin are definitely at the no 1 spot.

He did a lot here in Berlin. Opened up the repertoire - not only to modern music but e.g. to Sibelius. He is a great advocat of Haydn (what I understand) or Schumann (what i understand less). He made great "Late Night" programms on some saturdays (10:30 pm), performing niche music like the Winterreise-version of Zender for just 15 Euro on all places. He really developed - his first Bruckner symphonies weren´t great but with the years he got better and better with them. His 9th, with the 4th movement of SMPC which he highly advocates, was just stunning. His Beethoven 6 and 7 were really interesting, the passions of Bach extremly moving. And I´ve not even talked about Mahler... There are too many highlights to mention.
