This should be common sense. My father ran his business successfully for 47 years based on empathy. He understood leadership. It works.
@omispirit78995 жыл бұрын
For me this was all common sense. So from his message what I get which is congruent with my own perspective.... Society just lacks compassion and empathy so this message of Simon's is news for them!
@liamcallery28334 жыл бұрын
i think you have missed the point. Its not the idea that its simple or complicated or 'common sense' - its that people are not taught to be leaders.
@gsftb4 жыл бұрын
i thought it was common sense until i left school and applied for a job.. then i thought "this is normal - not to be empathetic" but to be "the best no matter what" and then i found great people like Simon who remind me that i wasn't wrong all along.

@@gsftb Well, what is "right" or "wrong" exactly? I think it's up to each and everyone to decide at the end of the day. One of the most important characteristics you can obtain is integrity, honesty, and dignity. Those 3 traits alone are sufficient to make you a decent and respectable human being. Other than that, don't get caught up in "wrongs" or "rights" in everyday life, meaning don't be so judgemental. See things as they are instead, situations that play out, and how you want to deal with them.

I'm not a businessman. I'm a teacher, but I believe what he said doesn't apply to only business. I want to make an environment where my students feel comfortable and willing to find their potentials. And this is what my principal should watch. When everything goes well, she doesn't appreciate our efforts, but she only criticizes us when something bad happens.

Hey my heart goes out to your response here. I hope this message finds you well but I am a motivational speaker and some of the issues that you mentioned here is what I help solve with students, teachers, and administration. I have had the privelege to travel the country living out this purpose. Would you mind hopping offline and speaking more in depth about some of these issues on a deeper level?

I'm an old retired middle level manager, and we never heard this type of motivational speeches before about how to manage. Every time Simon opens his mouth I am amazed, because he speaks to Perspective and Empathy and the need for Altruistic leaders as a way for businesses to sustain their forward movement and to treat their most important assets, their employees, as if they matter. If you can please pass this one to everyone on your mailing list. Businesses need to hear this more than they need profits in the short term.

One of the best speech I've ever heard. I made my Bachelor degree's thesis based on Emotional Intelligence, and I wish I could watch this video to make everything easier.
@blakebunch4485 Жыл бұрын
Emotional intelligence is a made-up term. There have been a lot of papers written about it however it amounts to nothing more than "agreeableness" the term emotional intelligence was coined by some journalist. What does it mean anyway? That I can infer what you're thinking or feeling. Maybe I know exactly what you're thinking and feeling and just don't give two shits. How do you differentiate emotional intelligence from empathy or sympathy? By the way it turns out that people who lack agreeableness and are disagreeable are the ones that succeed in the workplace. Not the other way around. Don't feed into the hype. I know they teach this in schools but schools are often wrong this is one case of many. I do hope you got your bachelor's degree and a good score on your thesis. I wish you well. Life itself is a classroom you can learn everywhere.
@human7491 Жыл бұрын
I don't like both adjectives. Agreeable and disagreeable. Let's rather use full sentences and say that emotionally intelligent people agree when they agree, disagree when they disagree. That's it. You don't have to view one as negative and the other one as positive. Feelings aren't fixated.

@johnypanta62084 жыл бұрын
Who are those 290 dislikes? Seriously what is wrong with people 😡? Do you hear eye-opening leadership advice for your company every day? There isn't a single downside about the things he says. If everyone feels more secure and fulfilled in their work environment they are more happy. If they are happier they are doing their job better and are more friendly to the customers. Satisfied and happy customers means more job for the company itself 😊. There are so many aspects in life that depend on how we are treated and how we treat others.

One example that I use is sports, we don't change 11 players when the team does not perform, we change the coach.
@TheChefcoco4 жыл бұрын
I think it should not by apply that way. Coach is part of the team/employees. when the team is not doing well it doesn't take long that the coach gets fired. But if you apply what Simon Sinek is saying, the owners and the general direction should not give that much pression on the coach and should be empathic towards him and give him the tools to help the team. the coach have the burden to make it work, if not, he's out! That's not really proactive ! How can he be a good coach if every mistakes he makes can cost him his job?
@Muckito4 жыл бұрын
@@TheChefcoco Well it's not even his mistakes that can cost him his job. Maybe he doesn't connect with the players very well, that's not 100% on him, maybe some of the most important players are injured for months, maybe the team loses a few games due to bad luck, maybe there are groups of players inside the team who don't get along with each other.
@liamcallery28334 жыл бұрын
sports analogies in business and leadership is so 1980. The the idea that the coach is the issue even though he might not have been taught the leadership skills is exactly what this video is talking about..... Its the idea that leaders are not born but developed. the idea that the coach may have been placed into a role he is not ready for is the issue.
@blipster17trtmn554 жыл бұрын
That's not the message either because as you can see today, the trend has become that and when players intentionally underperform to get the coach out! That does not go in line with this presentation in my opinion. So I suggest you to revisit that. Remember it is about PERSPECTIVE AND EMPATHY.

@Egregious_ Жыл бұрын
This is a brilliant talk. We focus so often on the "ideal" result in business, on an extremely irrational timetable, that we forget that both time and, _more importantly_, emotionally invested *people* lay the foundation for the ideal. A slow quarter or year doesn't spell permanent loss for shareholders. The greatest businesses that exist today *ALL* started before they IPOed. Passion drives success and nothing is less passion-motivating than rigid performance metrics, disconnected or metric-based management, or a cultural fear of failure.

So true. It’s far less about homogenising staff and more about recognising, utilising then celebrating people’s individual strengths and achievements. Sadly, too many directors focus on humiliating staff in order to make themselves feel important - not conducive to a healthy environment. When things go wrong we’re supposed to focus on areas of improvement rather than berating staff for their mistakes.

The CEOs that say that shit “It’s a war out there - I don’t have time to babysit.” became CEOs because they have that warrior mentality and the companies love that. But what they don’t realize is that, as time goes on, companies can’t fire underperforming employees and replace them with better ones - when the entire pool of new employees are just as dysfunctional as the ones they fired. By the time they wake up and realize they have a problem, it’s too late. But they won’t care - that will be a problem for the next CEO.

Empathy is an important and valuable trait indeed. When we express empathy towards others, we feel better about ourselves as well as the person receiving it. Sadly, in this world where we have to first and foremost care about ourselves, we can only show empathy at certain moments in our lives. To forget ourselves and to give to other's is very honorable, but serves no meaning unless we can fully take care of ourselves and do what is best for ourselves :)

This is a beautiful and vivid introduction to Empathy, for people who lack empathy, and want to learn to be more effective leaders. I think it is important to talk about the 'shadow side' of empathy. It is possible to experience other people's feelings so vividly, that you 'take on' and even get totally lost in them. Unconsciously, I believe this is why our general culture has numbed out empathy - people are afraid of each other. For those of us who are waking up increasingly subtle and powerful empathic awareness, this is a very real and concerns. I believe people are avoiding being more empathic, not just because we haven't been taught how to empathize, but because we haven't practiced how to empathizer AND THEN LET GO and stay centered within YOU. For me, Compassion is the element that breaks through the confusion. Genuine compassion is never patronizing. Yet compassion also creates healthy distance - it helps us remember who's feelings these are originally in a way that takes the fear out of being close to suffering.
