I find pulling half that weight at 75 pounds already mightily impressive, which is considered above the normal upper limit for modern day archery for men of my stature. But one day I hope to pull above 100 pounds, just for fun and giggles if anything at all. And I don't expect being able to consistently hit targets either. But to answer Woody. Dear don't like to be on the other end of 40 pound bows either and that's a lot less poundage XD

@Eric hoyt No doubt that he's trained those muscles to draw that bow. But watch how he draws it. He doesn't just pull the string back with his draw arm. He locks his draw arm back first and then lowers his outstretched down to finish the draw. Much easier on the draw arm that way. It's fairly easy to see on his final shot.
@siggyincr7447

@Eric hoyt Oh I agree, that's more bow than I would like to deal with. I used to use a 65lb recurve and had the chance to use a 110lb once in a while. That was pushing the limits of what I could pull back without hurting myself. But a lot of it is just practice. My friend with the 110 lb bow practiced daily and had a huge bulge of a muscle on one side of his neck/shoulder to show for it.

@Mike Smith Naw. The English (and the Welsh, who were better bowmen) longbowmen trained with bows from an early age. Building muscle to the point where you can tell which skeletons are archers quite easily. Farm work doesn't give you enough muscle quite honestly. Or more accurately, doesn't build up the same muscles as archery.

@dgriswold93

Actually, I would contest that. The arrows are quite heavy, yes, but so is the bow. Obviously, I can't say how heavy the arrows are exactly, but they are probably in the 1,000-1,350 grain range. For a 154 lb bow, those are not heavy. They're probably hovering around a minimum of 180 fps if they are on the heavier side, and could be moving over 200 fps if they are on the light side. These speeds are on the quick side for a longbow.
@ianexcalibur7096
@ianexcalibur7096 7 жыл бұрын
Drew Griswold Wrong! Bickerstaffe bows did tests between 90lb and 140lb bows, no difference in speed but obviously the bigger bows arrows had a lot more grunt behind them.
@dgriswold93
@dgriswold93 7 жыл бұрын
The heavier bows didn't shoot any faster because arrow weight was kept proportional to bow weight. A 90 lb bow may shoot a 900 grain arrow 165 fps, and a 140 lb may shoot a 1400 grain arrow at 165 fps. So the speed is the same because they are both 10 gpp. If the 140 lb bow then shot the 900 grain arrow, it would shoot much faster. Just like if the 90 lb bow shot a 600 grain arrow instead. It all depends of the gpp.

War bows weren't intended to be particularly accurate. Forget all the Robin Hood stuff. Have 5,000 archers, each putting six arrows a minute into an area and you have a lot of destruction in that area. They weren't shooting at an individual man, they were just aiming to put their arrows into the enemy crowd at 250 yards, then at 200 yards then at 150 yards. At Agincourt the English positioned some of the best archers just in front of the main body. They were the guys that shot at the individual Frenchmen that managed to break free of the melee.

Thing is the arrow will not fly as fast as my 55lb compound and I only hold 80% of that weight at the draw end! 150 lb longbow approx.250 FPS? If that. 55 lb compound 316 FPS. Which bow would I take to war given the choice of loosing off over hundreds arrows today? No choice really only very few men can draw heavy war bows and like me now in my 60's, joints get very damaged from pulling large weights.
