If you told me last year i would be waking up early to go out and photograph birds, i would've laughed. After discovering your channel and learning more about photography and especially wildlife photography, i am hooked. Thank you for sharing your knowledge. I look forward to your future videos.

I ran boat based nature/wildlife/photography tours for 25 years and clients with children would sometimes say, "My son or daughter wants to be a wildlife photographer, do you have any advice for them?" My most common answer would be, "Tell them to become a doctor, lawyer, stock broker, college professor, etc so they can earn a lot of money to buy expensive camera gear and travel to a lot of great wildlife areas during vacations. They will end up spending more time in the field taking great photos than most pros. If they won't listen and continue to want to be a pro wildlife photographer tell them to first go to a good secretarial school where they can learn typing, computer operation, and most important of all how to create functional filing systems for the tons and tons of paperwork they will be having to deal with. Having finally retired and reentered the world of non professional photography I am once again enjoying more great time in the field and a blessed absence of paperwork! The grass may look greener in the pro photo field but believe me when I say the real enjoyment of photography is experienced as an amateur with none of the hassles and tons more freedom to follow one’s photographic passion!

If I follow, as a “wildlife photographer” you make your income not from taking images on assignment or from licensing images but from running photo tours and monetizing KZfaq videos?

When i saw your channel first time i thought that you are probably a teacher or professor at some university, because your content is the most pedagogical, logical and understandable i ever seen. Thank you Simon!

Making uncommon photos from common subjects is probably the best photography advice that one could receive. Once again, thank you Simon!

Simon, this is a golden video. Rarely do you see someone sharing their real life and how much work goes into the less cool things. I think that anyone who plans to get into this line of work should watch this video.

Great content doesn’t always make great video unless there is a lot of work behind the scenes, so I hope your viewers appreciate all that extra work you put in to make yours a premium channel globally! Really enjoyed your day in the life video!

pretty similar to our daily routine too. We usually get out 3-5 days a week for about 8-9 hours per day. Sorting, editing and culling photos is another 3-4 hours which I usually do on the off day or at night after I rest a bit and get a bite to eat. Wildlife and nature photography; you can be hot, cold, thirsty, wet, dry, laying in mud, brushing dust off your gear, wake up and be on the road before sunrise, and get home after dark many times all on the same day. I love it and wouldn't trade it for anything. After I retired from a corporate career, this is my life now and I love it. Thanks for sharing your day with us.

You share so much good information and many helpful tips. However, I think your guidance to “take uncommon photos of common subjects,” is your best and most important.
