Make It!
In this video, I am in the workshop making a pair of canoe paddles. Starting from selecting timber, right through the laminating, planing and shaping stages to reinforcing the blades with fibreglass and epoxy, I will take you through the whole process to create a beautiful handmade paddle of your own.
I have always wanted to make a traditional paddle and I am thrilled with the outcome - a deep water Ottertail paddle for myself and a powerful Beavertail paddle for my buddy Ginge - light, efficient, flexible paddles that will last a lifetime.
Timber sizes and all measurements come from the book mentioned in the video, linked below.
Thanks for watching!

The whole day long I laugh with the song, and paddle me own canoe, so love everybody, trust only the few as the world I go travelling through. And never sit down with a tear and a frown, but paddle your own canoe, I rise with the lark, from daylight to dark, I do what I have to do ! 🛶 Richard ⛺️Indoors ! 👌

On your next paddle try only using oil on the handle and shaft and varnish or epoxy on the blade. An oiled shaft and handle won't give you that hand burn after a few hours in the canoe. Very nice work. Like the flex!

Nice work. I make paddles for tribal canoe journeys in the pnw. Just a tip from someone who has paddled hundreds of miles with my own paddles, drill out and dowel laterally through your handle where you grip. Those handle ears will break off with all that vertical grain over time. It hurts like breaking a bone when you've made it yourself.

I've been thinking about the canoe on some of the trips, and having it fiberglass makes so much sense. So enjoyable to watch a craftsman at work! I would love more videos like this! And to dislikes? Come on... If you don't like it, find something else. A craftsman who also makes great videos, what's not to like?

Very nice looking paddles! I make my paddles from solid piece of wood (spruce) and only use linseed oil for preservation (which require top-up's now and then). Fibre glass and epoxy prolongs the life of the blade but I find it a messy business applying it. I use an axe, for the rough shaping, my Canadian croocked knife, a plane and wood carving knifes from Mora and sandpaper. I need to get one of those small spokeshaves though.
@MikeSiemens88
@MikeSiemens88 3 ай бұрын
Yeap, same here, finish with linseed oil, no fibreglass, epoxy required really. Once you put epoxy on, varnish is a must to prevent UV from destroying it over time. Costly & unnecessary IMHO. Paddles are plenty strong without. Linseed oil is cheap & can be touched up any time. Also not as slippy when wet as varnish. For abrasion protection I apply a thin band of thickened epoxy to the tip of the blade.

A super video, and very nice paddles. I preferred to oil mine when I made it but I just prefer the feel on the shaft and grip when they are oiled. I take a plastic bladed paddle for the shallow stuff so it's not so critical to worry about protecting the blade. You've got a nice workshop for working in.
