Best parts: [1] seeing that Simon is healthy in this time of trouble, as I was worried about him; [2] that giggle-inducing gear disappearing / reappearing act perfectly synchronized to the music.

Simon, I was photographer for a expedition in the jungle. We attempted a Portage over a waterfall, unfortunately my camera bag decided to part company. WHEN WE CAUGHT UP DAMAGE WAS DONE. THE SHOP BACK IN THE MAINLAND TRIED BUT FAILED TO RESUSCITATE.....soooooo the lens works great to start a fire...lol Hope your camera is brought back to former glory!.. May your feet be sure on the trail, your campfire warm at night...and the trail tales are true!

Finally, someone who includes camera and tripod in their camping kit. I've been trying to figure out how to keep things light, because camera gear isn't exactly small and light and not much you can do in that department, so best bet would be to go as light as possible with everything else.

So, the intro. I didn't know what to do with that. Being from Texas, I associate very different images with Mariachi music. Way to keep us on our toes! Loved it! I carry dental floss in my sewing kit. That stuff won't break and the wax makes it super easy to use.

Hi Simon, I am always surprised how many little and big bags people take with them. Yes your stuff is more organized, but how much weight do all those little bags add to your kit? A tarp can be rolled up and kept that way using a rubber band or stretchy para-cord. Possibles pouch, great. A semi-sturdy ziplock bag would do almost the same job, is lighter, and keep it waterproof too. A sleeping bag does not need a compression bag. Instead put your sleeping bag in your backpack to fill up empty gaps in your pack. A tent does not need a little bag, like the tarp. You eliminate all these extra little bags, replace them with simpler things like stretchy para-cord, and you will save some weight.
@simonablokeinthewoods
@simonablokeinthewoods 4 жыл бұрын
I see what you are saying and it would definitely make a difference to weight, but I’d never get all that gear in without compressing it into bags -also makes finding, packing and organising gear much easier - I like my gear compartmentalised and stowed in order. 👍

Thank you! I can be a job to keep the weight down, and sometimes a bit unnerving taking away those ‘safety’ items - I didn’t take any spare clothing on this hike for example - and risked the weather - if it had been pouring with rain, I’d have been in a different situation for sure! 👍

Thank you Simon, another great video! I used to use an MSR Micro Rocket stove, until one day a mate of mine decided to light up a candle as I was screwing the gas canister to it. The valve was open, and the gas arced to the candle and blew itself about thirty feet into the bush. I use a mini-Trangia now, with the same box stove as you, and a purple fluid...it's fondue fuel, odourless, and no smoke. Much of the gear you use is the same as mine, though yours has seen many more miles; a good thing! I love the choice of reading!!! Stay safe mate, cheers!!!

One method to avoid over-tightening boot laces is to tie a knot into your laces about 3/4 up your boot. Leave this in place, then tie to the top in the usual way. The lower section remains at the same tension each time you wear them. I like to keep the lower section relatively loose, with plenty of wriggle room.

By the way, the Norwegian word "Turmat" is a word made of two words: "Tur" and "Mat". "Tur" means "trip" and is a common word for a hike, and "mat" means "food". So directly translated "Real turmat" means "real trip food". But a better translation is probably "proper hiking food", given how the word "real" is used by Norwegians. The company goes by the English brand name "Real outdoor food"

Orale! (Alright!-as in a cheer) Simon(pronounced See-mon in Spanish), Un Bato En El Bosqe!(as in your title) Aa hoo a! (Phonetic translation- Hurray!(as in a cheer).Thanks from a Friend from Douglas, Arizona (on the Mexican border). Loved the song! Its a Corrida, a type of Nortena (Northern Mexico folk song)- a fast dance very similar to a Polka, still very popular here along the states on both sides of the border. One really good one is El gallo de oro by Ana Gabriel (On KZfaq).My favorite out of all types of dancing music. Lots of fun to dance to. Accuracy in the steps is not so important, as copious amounts of beer and tequila usually occur together at the dances, though not at all mandatory. ...So everybody take off your hiking boots and put on your cowboy boots and dance away the lock down! Quite a fun surprise from England! Really woke me up!! I'm sure I'll be playing it over and over! Muchas Gracias! Adios, Bato!

Regarding your cameras dunk in the North Sea. To wash the salts off the circuitry use distilled water (you can make your own with a domestic kettle). Dry as much off with a hairdryer then use those silicon crystal packs to absorb the remnants of any residual moisture (great thing is you can dry the packs out in a microwave or oven) I've done this with laptops and keyboards. as long as there's no power when you do the washing and it's perfectly dry when you next power them up your good to go.

Glad to see that you are well Simon. I also just saw a new video from Andy of Kent Survival pop-up. I have wondered/worried about each of your well being. I got a good chuckle from something you said, at around 2:04. "Before we were rudely interrupted by the corona virus". LoL!! Rude is right!! All of my favorite get-aways and trail-heads are closed. Enjoyed this video. Be safe and be well. God bless. Roger

Hey Simon, great overview over your gear! Really interesting kit and I really like your little woodstove (got the same wind shield), didn't know that one before. Stay safe and cheers from Germany! Martin

Nice gear review! One thing you might want to change would be getting some foldable reading glasses. They would take up about 70% less space then you conventional glass case.

Your detailed review of your kit was quite useful, and the intro entertaining. Thank you as always. Be well, and take good care. P.S the phrase ‘bivy privy’ may stick with me for awhile...

Just had a thought when you went through your first aid items if it's any help for you or Maggie I brought a credit card style tick remover from a National Trust shop complete with magnifying glass. Thanks for the insight in to your kit. Look after yourself and your family. Will be grateful for any videos you post.

That sounds like a good idea! I usually keep twist tick removers in my main FAK. 👍
