In this video, I paddle out to a secret island with my faithful dog Maggie in my homemade cedar strip canoe. We spend the morning cooking and enjoying a delicious rabbit stew with wild foraged blackberries and nettles - absolute bliss! Don't forget to check out my Facebook and Instagram pages if you haven't already done so. I hope you enjoy the video and thanks for watching!

Another lovely video. I have never successfully cooked rabbit, maybe I will give it another go. I am amazed you said the wood cat-litter was ok as cat-litter. About 30 years ago when I had 2 new kittens that were supposed to be house trained and I decided to try the wood litter (maybe a different formula but looks the same) both cats refused to use litter tray and weed next to the litter tray. Eventually I sussed that the reason they did it was when weeing, the urine soaked into litter, expanded and made it very uncomfortable for kittens with little legs. Dumped that stuff in favour of clay type litter and all was well. Looking at your comments at the end of video I can't help thinking that wood pellets are totally useless!

Maggggggiiiiiieeeeeee!! Laughing my butt off watching her eyes go from the rabbit, to you, to the rabbit, to you. LOL As to the gasifier stove commentary, you are one of the few people that as ever spoken about packing the stove well vertically and doing a top fire ignition. I saw KZfaq video where a guy showed this very well, and he got an excellent burn from it, without repacking every 37 seconds, without constant attention, etc. Cheers.

Cheers Ray! She looked quite expectant didn’t she, her patience astounds me sometimes!! The vertical stick stacking/fire on top is my next method to try - I’ve a feeling it’ll be better than the pellets but perhaps not burn for so long, we’ll see! Atb and thanks! Simon

Great video. When you mentioned rabbit being tough you've had in the past I think it is because the rabbit we get here can be old as usually shot and have no idea of age when I was in Malta rabbits are bred to eat and it was always tender and amazingly tasty. In ww2 there was no meat in Malta and rabbits were dropped of for troops to eat and became a national dish shallow fried in garlic, white wine then chicken stock tastes amazing.

The commercial wood gasifier/twig stove we purchased for testing came with several extra pieces. There is a small, round grill with folding handle. It is good for one burger, a small steak, chop etc. Also included is a pan to protect the ground as live coals and ash fall through the burner and a small pan for burning alternate fuels. In addition to wood, we have used liquid alcohol (spirits in many parts of the world), fuel tabs, gelled alcohol and cans of Sterno type gelled alcohol meant for emergency stoves and chaffing dishes. We have even placed our Trangia spirit burner inside this stove in windy conditions and it worked very well. A simple change in how you configure the stove makes the unit very flexible. No need to carry a wind screen as the stove casing acts as your wind screen. Great combination for apartment/condo dwellers for emergency use during a power outage. The sill of an open window (non-flammable masonry) or small space on a veranda and you are good to go. The only thing we would NOT do with this unit is grill food directly over fuel tabs or gelled alcohol as they give off a slight unpleasant odor. A trip to a local pack or wooded area should supply you with all the renewable fuel you could ever need.

Great video my friend Sir Simon! That rabbit sure did look larruping! Growing up as a young boy, rabbit was are main meat during the winter. Squirrel was second. I shot my first rabbit at age 11-12 with now my 22 Remington single shot. Shot it right between the eyes! My Dad was elated! We would ride the hedge rows in winter's snow. The rabbits were less active. One day we harvested 23 rabbits. My Mom would cook (skillet fry) rabbit with salt, pepper and garlic salt. Served with mashed potatoes and gravy! Tasted better than chicken!

Maggie is such a sweetheart! My dogs are good guys, BUT, when food is around I am reminded of a survivor in a life raft surrounded by prowling sharks. LOL I always share, and they wait patiently but attentive. (and between them I'm sure there is the shard thought ... "you bump the table, I'll grab the meat, and we'll share once we are outside)

Looks great simon ill have to try that. When i load my firebox stove i put a bit of a branch or a bottle or tube ( whatever i have a hand ) the fill up the stove then slowly pull the branch out. Making it into a sort of Swedish fire stove, Most of the time it never collapses in on itself. I hope this helps keep up thd great work

Another entertaining and informative video. Deeply into/almost the end of raspberries both red and black, blackberries and elderberries here (Colorado), earlier than usual by a week. Cottonwood trees on the plains and aspens up in the hills over 9000 feet are just beginning to turn. Autumn is on its way.

Cheers Gary, yes, it’s starting to get just a hint of a feel of autumn here too, the leaves aren’t turning yet, but the days are getting shorter and there is a dampness and a chill in the early morning. I do love autumn! Atb, Simon

I bet it was good. It's been years since I've had rabbit but we raised them on the farm when I was growing up. I can still remember the first time seeing one at the kitchen table and thinking "hmm, that's odd... that chicken has four legs."

Nice one Simon, I could just about taste that lot. Once upon a time I had thought about using blackberries and blackberry liquor in a creamy sauce for gamey stuff....I think I'll give it some more thought. Aye some really fine flavours of the countryside going on there...great stuff, cheers 👍

We did Parsons Venison on a ship I was on for Xmas lunch as an alternative choice to the old cardboard Turkey. It was in fact a boned and rolled leg of lamb marinaded in port, with juniper berries, bay leaves and one or two other bits n bobs.... and the Blackberry idea stemmed from that. The port and cream idea was nice but I thought something fruity could make it more interesting... Ive yet to try it out... 😀

Another great video. With wood gas stoves it looks like the wood gas is coming up the sides and in through the holes, but it's actually just hot air. The wood gas comes off the top of the fire but without the air it would escape as smoke.

Another great adventure well done. 3/4 bunnies are always the best eating but can die hard... Further to a previous msg re cat litter, my stove a Wild Woodgas Stove - Budget Model, also has holes the little pellets can fall out. I use a stainless collapsable steamer with fold out leaves under the stove and let the debris fall. Great bit of kit £2.00 @ Aldi. Various other sites sell them it too. IKEA one is poor quality. Lots of small perforations to aerate and small legs with spherical feet keep it orf the ground... More aeration...Used it with coals too and grilliput BBQ Keep up the good work

Hi Simon, from Scole Bridge. Managed to squeeze under the fallen willow, and had to get out and push a few times. The reeds are almost blocking the entire width in places. Paddled for about 45 mins and stopped for lunch. Then decided as it was hard going and we would have a strong headwind on the way back, best to call it a day there and head back upstream to the car. It was still a fun way to spend a few hours :-)
