In my latest film I finally get to spend time on a permission that I have had for over a year and been unable to use because of lockdown. I attempt to get some photos of the local Badgers using artificial lights and get more than I bargained for!!!

Great stuff. The fox was bringing food in for those cubs, they often use badger holes. I’ve had a very similar thing happen, the cubs I had were moved in by the parents during a night I wasn’t there then the first I knew was an adult dropped some food off and out they came.

Wow this video brought me back over 30 years ! to the housing estate we lived in at the time backed on to a state forestry ! my dad would wake me up well before sunrise and we,d head out n watch the fox cubs playing before sunrise as we were stalking through a part in a forest where some trees were rooted out of no where we startled a badger n 2 cubs ( i think we got more of a fright) in a moment they were gone. ! thank you for the memory. best regards Pat.

Fantastic work Simon its not unusual for Fox and Badger to share a Set, the Badger is very fussy about its Set, the Fox not so much and will move into a disused section of a set. The Vixon was bringing back a kill to the Cubs not the Badger. Old Broc just took advantage of a free meal in my opnion. I have been watching wildlife here in the Glen of Aherlow in County Tipperary, Ireland for over 40 years and that piece of video had me stumped, I had never even dreemed that a Fox would do that, until I saw the cubs, then it made sence to me. I have seen the Fox do that several times, especially when she is weaning the cubs to solid food, she won't spend much time with them. Keep up the great work, love all the content. I'm even gettin in sneeky vids at work, shusss don't tell the boss haha.

I read a paper many years ago now, describing how badgers and foxes complement each other ecologically, and it doesn't surprise me that they have learnt to associate as we have reduced their habitat amount significantly, thereby forcing them together. We have trail cameras up at our community garden and we have both species coming to the pond we built. Just magic. Lovely watching your videos.

Beautiful photography!!!! The photos are the end are seriously impressive. Interesting with the fox dropping the prey for the badgers. In the clip where the Badger comes out to grab it there are a couple of eyes (probably the Fox) watching in the distance. Maybe the Fox gifts the Badgers? Who knows. Top job though.

Hi Simon - I unfortunately found an old badger sett on my patch and I'm still looking to see if there is a new one around. I've been watching deer and 2 youngsters came to within about 25 yards of me. Even though I only had my binos with me it was magic. Next time I'll have the camera. Your right it's all about the animals and It's magic when you eventually get a photo or two. Thanks

Superb vlog!! I went through the same experience last year, only 100yrd from where I live. Was your adrenaline up everytime they turned up. Mine was, I was so excited about the experience. Even though I didn't expose my findings to anyone. Sadly in January badger baiters had discovered them. I know they had killed one. Then I made my findings to the local community, hopping I'd get support. It's done the job so far. And i haven't seen anymore baiters since. It's beats me Simon, why anyone would want to harm these beautiful creatures. Great video mate 👍

Simon, don't know where I've been but only just seen this video. Wow, so inspirational, thanks for posting it. Having got badgers visiting my garden and taking a peanut and sultana mix I need to try and get some night shots. This video has already got me thinking and planning. One question, can I get away without gradually introducing light at night or is it better to phase light in over a period of time? Thanks

Hi Simon Bloody Brilliant again. I film Badgers on my Trail cameras near a huge set with many openings and as you say you never know which hole they going to come out of. I have never seen any Badgers come out before 10pm. Looks like I may have to invest in some lights like yours. Please can you recomend some for me to buy. Keep up the good work.Many thanks Neil

Hi Simon, it's not uncommon for a foxes to hole up beside a badger sett, i think it was dropping food off for the fox cubs but badger beat it to it, just a thought 🤔 It might be best to set your lighting up on a timer or remote because badger may appear before sunset and the least you walk around the sett area the better. Always look forward to your video, thanks for sharing very informative. Love my new realtree pattern camera bean bag. Great stuff Simon 👏 alb Mark

Fascinating stuff Simon. I've never seen a lighting setup like that used on wildlife at night before. I had assumed the constant light would bother them but that is just not the case. So much better than using flash. That 2.8 max aperture is proving very useful. Ever thought of using the auto ISO setting on the camera?
@simoneardley
@simoneardley 3 жыл бұрын
Cheers Dave, might give auto iso a go. Think it might make it too noisy though, worth a try eh !! Just discovered Topaz denoise, what a piece of software. Worth every penny👌

@@simoneardley I have auto ISO on permanently on my D850. Yes, it can make it noisy so you have to keep an eye on it. I've been using Denoise for a few months now and I couldn't live without it. Amazing software! I also use Topaz's AI Sharpen and Gigapixel AI. Both excellent. There are many 15% discount codes out there for Topaz software and they sometimes have offers on their website so it's worth keeping an eye on it.

Crackin' video as always, Simon. I was wondering if you aren't spending the entire night out there, how to do get into and out of that position without them noticing you and learning your smell? Thanks again!

No not there all night, just arrive a couple of hours before dark set up and get the lights on an hour prior and hope for the best. Difficult not going near the sett but no other way round it really 👍🏼👀

I’m guessing the fox was paying his rent with the squirrel for the badger letting him share its sett.. If you get a large sett like this the fox will sometimes take over an abandoned section for its earth... Great footage Simon, and what a result. 👍 Hope the 3 pairs of eyes you saw weren’t doggers 😂

Incredible patience - well done, Simon. I wonder how the models would react to 100% continuous light if it's on from before the sunlight disappears?
@simoneardley
@simoneardley 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks Eigil, i generally put the lights on about an hour before they usually appear. Youre limited really with the length of time the powerbanks will last. Maybe remote controlled switches would help👍🏼

@@simoneardley Yes, I can imagine the problems with bringing sufficient power to be able to stretch the local daylight long enough for the "models" to adapt to it. And a more permanent installation would probably tend to vanish.

Yes theyre charged at home Jeremy and the panels plug straight into the powerbanks. I use one panel per powerbank although each powerbank has two usb outputs and will run two lights off one if required.

I would never use artificial lights on wildlife. How does it benefit the animal? It doesn't. Wild animals walk a fine line of survival every day. Being momentarily affected by artificial light can lead to their deaths. Of course, if the animal dies 10 minutes after being photographed the photographer will be none the wiser.
@simoneardley
@simoneardley 3 жыл бұрын
I can understand your comment if I was using a high intensity flash set up and the sudden light flash would spook the subject and they would run away blinded however I have created a small pool of artificial ambient light that the subject has chosen to enter of its own accord. The fox cubs were comfortable and relaxed ,playing, feeding and going about their business in a most natural fashion. To suggest that the cubs would be affected in a way that within 10 minutes of being exposed to the light they would then go away and possibly die is somewhat strange!!🤔
