somebody who is given a tree - while living in an apartment no less - and right away feels anxious about keeping it alive, to the point of taking cuttings for safety, and then managing to keep said tree alive and thriving for 25 years, without any training - is someone who truly cares about trees. you can sense his commitment and pride in them. thanks for sharing this humble but inspirational video - i enjoyed it much more than watching some bigshot american 'bonsai professional' show off their perfect junipers. and thank you peter for being so considerate and supportive when discussing the trees with this man. it was a plesure to listen to you both.

A bonsai master class from our bonsai master Peter Chan. The true sign of a master is to recognize that a "student" has grasped the idea, even if not from the master's teaching. This was an outstanding video. One that does not so much highlight the master as it does the "student". Just wonderful. A million thanks for this video.

This was a great video. Its inspiring to see the results from someone who is alot like us, having no choice but to learn over the years from our mistakes. My collection is a monument to my mistakes over the years and years. I also, dont know any of the rules, I dont even ever define a front... but seeing these really did make me realize how you can take the unconventional, and find it so aesthetically pleasing and inspiring. LOVE the movement in the trunks. Gorgeous trees. Hope someday, the person who has my two little elms will help them to become as inspiring. Thank you for sharing....

Trees in nature tend to grow branches where the sun hits the trunk. So they don't leave a "front " side without branches to block view of the trunk. Trees in nature don't follow the rules. I think that is why the elms look so old. I like that style.
@andreasweber1533
@andreasweber1533 3 жыл бұрын
Very nice trees, pretty much what Walter Pall calls "naturalistic style", as per John Naka's "Don't make your tree look like a bonsai, make your bonsai look like a tree." The elms work perfectly well altough there may be branches clouding the trunk in places; the canopy is easily transparent enough to show the inner structure, it's not just a blobby bush. And I like to have some rooted cuttings on the side as well, at least before I do something major (like growing a new rootbase on my Chinese elm).

I love those trees because they genuinely look like wild grown trees. Ya you can see some clear training on the main trunks, but the branches look so so so natural it’s gorgeous. Every branch, while the trees are very full, don’t hide any other branch of part of the tree. It’s plenty open while being full enough to look like a very very old mature tree. Absolutely amazing, I agree with his decision to keep the “front” branch. Removing it would open the trunk up a bit more - but then you lose that complete fullness of a mature tree, and get a bit bald spot
