Inn my think the line of thinking is that they feel they have to have street cred to be taken seriously. They may feel that experience is the best teacher and feel they need to do these things to learn about it. Along with initially having a criminal rep, there’s also street cred on changing and having the “former wild life story.” They may think having a functional upbringing and lifestyle is boring and won’t sell records.

Can’t play around, first rule my pops told us when we grew up on them Hills in the 90s. Even riding the U6 bus through 37 to get to Benning you had to know what you on.
