I have no idea how I ended up watching a video on cleaning a coolant overflow resevoir but here I am. If you want to get those remaining rust stains out of the jug use a product called Iron Out. It comes in powder or spray. Add a little to the jug, slosh around, wait 1-5 minutes, and rinse. Just be careful, it is an acid product. Cheers.

You might want to skip the abrasive material, or use a less aggressive medium. But YMMV

Probably more expensive than your lemon scented bleach, but I think a good soaking with CLR might do a better job. Might try walnut shell blasting at low air pressure.

@mostlyuselessgarage
@mostlyuselessgarage Жыл бұрын
Do you have an aluminum or iron block? Iron tends to leave rusty residue that's hard to remove.
@joheewrx5278
@joheewrx5278 Жыл бұрын
@mostlyuselessgarage I have a 2006 subaru wrx. The block and heads are aluminum alloy. My coolant tank, just had dirt/gunk buildup from previous owner! But i just used degreaser w a straw tip, and it literally took all of it off on contact. I was worried about the degreaser leaving oil/oil residue, so i washed it out w dish soap and car soap multiple times until it didnt feel greasy to touch inside anymore.

If you're iron block you're gonna be picking up a lot of that contaminants in your motor. You may want to flush the coolant a few times or just send it!

@@mostlyuselessgarage I was tempted to use mine for various cleaning around the house and garage that I eventually got one for the purpose. You can get them for pretty cheap.
@Professional_Youtube_Commenter
@Professional_Youtube_Commenter 5 ай бұрын
if it's cheap to replace, just buy a new one. Mine is like $15 - just replace with new. I wonder if the chemicals you put in it will be almost half the price of the replacement and you don't account for the imperfect clarity you will have on the cleaned container and time spend on repairing. Not to mention this chemical treatment seems quite long and you need to soak for a long time so you might be without a car during this time. edit, I thought the scrubbing on the outside was pretty useless. I am surprised you didn't use a diswashing stick thing and push it into the bottle and try and scrub out the insides.

Stock Miata units are ~$70 and aftermarket metal ones are ~$150 so YMMV. The bleach and dish soap used were basically free, as was the few hours of my time. Thx for the comment!

Hi Bro. Saw this on youtube. MAGIC. Should be a 24 hr soak with a water and Sulfamic Acid mix. Search this KZfaq video " How To Clean & Restore Coolant Tank - PERMANENTLY" from "LOW MILEAGE" post. Sulfamic acid is used as an acidic cleaning agent, sometimes pure or as a component of proprietary mixtures, typically for metals and ceramics. It is frequently used for removing rust and limescale, replacing the more volatile and irritating hydrochloric acid. It is an excellent de-scaling agent.

Dude, awesome recommendation! TIL sulfamic acid would be great for this job, and is available from Home Depot. Another commenter also recommended Iron Out. Sounds like a comparison video is needed!
