When I learned to crochet many years ago, I picked up the yarn under habit in everyday crochet. It wasn't until recently that I realized I was doing it " backwards" from a regular stitch so I had to teach myself yarn over...then I started amigurumi & am having to switch back! 😂

Thank you! This was really great! I watched a lot of videos but none of them explained the difference in size. I do recall being told the stitches will be tighter, but you went beyond and explained and showed the difference. Very knowledgeable video.

A real light bulb moment for me (a real beginner), just seeing you do just a single crochet. I was only crocheting 1/2 a stitch. Also, great explanation for YO, vs. YU. Thank you!

I love this! Thank you for the clear demonstration. I have a question, do you think the yarn under technique uses more yarn compared to the normal yarn over? Thank you :)
@olliehollycrochet
@olliehollycrochet 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Tiffany, I haven't actually tested this out so I can't be 100% sure, but I believe you use less yarn with the yarn under technique because the stitches are tighter! Hope this helps! Abby

Much less. Complete product with yarn under is much smaller than the product with yarn over sc.

This was great thank you. How do you do a decrease with the yarn under ~ yarn over technique ☺
@olliehollycrochet
@olliehollycrochet 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Jamie, that's a great question! I just decrease the same way as I do when I work the yarn over technique. So I'll insert my hook into the front loops of the next two stitches, yarn under to draw a loop up, then yarn over to complete the stitch. The decrease isn't as invisible as it is for the yarn over technique, but it isn't very noticeable either. You will likely think it looks very obvious while crocheting, but once your piece is done, you'll still have to look really closely to be able to locate the dec sts. Hope this helps! Abby

@@olliehollycrochet Hi Abby that's great, thank you for getting back to me and letting me kniw I really appreciate it ☺💖 Im left handed and tried this technquie but just doing a few increase rounds and its great and your video explained it really well. Will now be able to decrease. Thank you 🙌🤗 x

i've only recently started crocheting, i finally figured out how to get the increases to look nice! it was tHIS ! the yarn over thing seemed to leave slightly bigger gaps... ? ?? But now.. my decreases are stlil... bad looking. :/ dunno how to make them as neat...
@olliehollycrochet
@olliehollycrochet 5 ай бұрын
The invisible decrease still works for the x-stitch, it just won’t be as invisible (still not very noticeable though). You can do this by inserting your hook into the front loops of the next two stitches, then yarn under to pull a loop up, then yarn over and pull through the two loops on your hook. Hope this helps!

I've tried the YU (Yard Under) method. The tighter stitches worked great for an amigurumi. But I noticed the surface was bumpy. Any advice on this?

Hi! I love to crochet, and I especially enjoy crocheting amigurumi. However, I'm curious as to ask what single crochet decrease do you use for when using the x-stitch/cross stitch single crochet? And how do you make the invisible decrease (inv dec) (for single crochet) when using the x-stitch/cross stitch single crochet? I was unable to find any information on how to do so.
@olliehollycrochet
@olliehollycrochet 11 ай бұрын
Hi! I insert my hook through the two front loops, yarn under to draw a loop up, then yarn over to draw through the two loops. It’s not as invisible as when working standard sc invisible decrease, but I find that I don’t really see it unless I’m looking for it. Hope this helps!

@olliehollycrochet

Hello! I use this method even in the MR, you don’t really see the x’s as clearly though. I just do it to keep everything consistent 😁

I was wondering why you do the y/u then y/o instead of both being y/u. I am new just trying to learn 🙂
@olliehollycrochet
@olliehollycrochet 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Teri! I do yarn under/yarn over to keep the x a little looser so the stitch looks a little puffier and more defined. It’s just my preference ☺️ If you do yarn under/yarn under, your stitch becomes a little tighter, which will make the “x” a bit less distinct. No wrong answers here though, use what feels right to you! 😁 Abby

Thanks. I’m already understand. I specifically thought this was a left handed tutorial It can get confusing I’m following a new pattern. Where the designer. Alternate X and V stitch in the same round. It creates makes for a very interesting look. I seen this a lot but could never figure out. The what? Well I bought a pattern and there it was. It’s an alternating st. It’s driving me nuts because the orientation of the yarn changes depending on your direction. I did t kknow if I was cross st or standard. So I came to just look at the basics. Abs it’s a right handed video. Ok. Thank you.

You need to slow down. You whipped your yarn over so fast each time I can’t tell what you’re doing. It’s too fast to follow.
