Simple Homemade Wine Press

Here is a really easy wine press that I made from 2x6 lumber. This entire project cost only around $10 and can get you started with making wine from grapes. This is a simple alternative to a basket press that anyone can make at home.

Might sound crazy but I bought and sanitized a mop bucket and press with that...works good

A wooden box with holes drilled in the bottom also works. A 5 gallon bucket with a cordless drill and paint stirring wands is super easy

Great idea. Thinkingvmaybe a 2x10 ir 2x12 with a hole in the middle to cause the juice to flow through, which could allow to use it flat. Just an idea. Thx

The wider boards would definitely help. I don't think you will really need a hole though. In the video I used cheese cloth but a muslin bag will work much better. I may make a follow up video once I have some more grapes this year.

i know nothing about wine presses, but i agree and wonder if this would allow for a hoizontal press that could be used w/o help. though this would probably require a bit more woodwork to get something nice.

How much weight or pressure do you want to apply to the grapes? I am thinking that using two buckets , one inside the other with the one on the bottom drilled with holes and filled with grapes to be pressed. You would apply pressure to the top bucket and the buckets could be placed on a tray on a table into which the juice flows and is directed into a carboy or target bucket. You would not need a second pair of hands. Thoughts?

It is quite a bit of pressure. A bladder press, which most wineries will use is generally pressurized between about 1.5 to 2 bar or about 20-28psi. If you bucket has a diameter of about 12 inches and you wanted to achieve about 20psi, you would need to apply about 2,250lbs. There are a lot of homemade designs that use hydraulic jacks, and most pressed for home use will have a ratcheting cam mechanism to amplify the mechanical advantage of the screw drive substantially. If you don't have a lot of grapes, you can hand squish them into a strainer and work then around to get most of the juice out. Also if you build something, you will need a lot less pressure if it is a lower stack of grapes. I once calculated the force on my basket press with a reasonable amount of pressure on the crank and I believe it was about 1 ton but fill it about 15 inches deep by about a foot in diameter.

@@TheHomeWinemakingChannel Wow! Thanks... I was kind of nervous about the calculation I had done with the assumption that the diameter of the bucket would be about 12 inches... Your 2000 + lbs confirms my concern so I will likely go even lower tech and use a paint straining bag to hold the grapes and press them by hand above a colander into a bucket or kettle... I make hard cheese and I have made a cheese press but the footprint is much smaller and I don't want/need nearly as much pressure as that to extract the whey - although 20lbs PSI is not unheard of for some cheeses. (I use about 16 lbs of weight to make a squeaky curd cheese and about 60 lbs of weight to make a hard kefir cheese but the curds are about 1 inch thick and the diameter I am pressing is about a 2 inch follower.

Dude... This is really the worst idea ever, just make a bucket press from plastic buckets from the hardware store, about 1000x better than this. Waste of 2x6 lumber, imho.
