This feels brilliant the more you listen to it. It grows. It's a shame it never found its place. Even as a b-side. It's got something about it though. Lyrically it feels hopeful. Great seeds of good musicianship that just needed knocking into place a bit more. Fascinating stuff though. Cheers for letting people hear it!

Thank you very much, grazie mille. I hear/Feel the presence of the great"man in the sky" Mick Mcneil. Beautiful song . Greetings from Italy from a Simple Minds fan since 1983!

What a song, a standout track! Should have been in the album no questions!

A significant moment - the first unreleased SM track with vocals that's ever been publicly leaked if I'm not mistaken. When I first heard it, the experience for a lifelong fan like myself was monumental - like discovering SFY's lost child. Beautiful and stately, and the lyrics very relevant for the world of today. Obviously the jumping off point for Saturday Girl, but where Saturday Girl is lightweight fluff, this is a genuine protest song, without the shouting. And perhaps this accounts for its omission from the album. Where much of SFY is an understated sign of the times (save the tacked-on Ballad of the Streets EP), People Stand Up Again is direct, so the band may have felt the inclusion of the song would just be overdoing it, and the fluff version of Saturday Girl was a much needed respite from the street fighting. But hard to deny that the track's relegation to the archives is a loss for everyone, and certainly a missed opportunity for the SFY box set. Oh, and that magnificent coda - the sound of Burchill and MacNeil in lockstep that would prove nigh on impossible to replicate in post 80's SM. So now that it's out there, no more messing around - release it with some upgraded audio instead of letting it rot in the vaults for eternity...

Whoever is responsible for releasing SM unreleased/demos etc.....is so bad, always have been..We've not even had dedicated rereleases of their early albums, just that ludicrous box set. All other bands have rereleased earlier albums. The silver box set is welcome but is so badly put together & anyone missing out then has to pay a fortune now, same with NGD box set. Add to that no live albums of early gigs...really is a tragic state ofvaffairs for a band that produced the finest music ever .

What a gem !!! And only a demo. Just imagine a fully completed production. It sounds so fragile and yet such a great dynamic and power. Can't get enough of it ! As a lifetime SM-fan you think they cannot really surprise you anymore and than this turns up ... So over the moon with this song.

How did this not end up on SFY? Amazing song !! A song of those times(88-89), I would also say it could relate to present times.

Instead of having the rest of..the ballad of the streets..on the album. I honestly thought it was incredibly sneaking putting Mandela and biko on. Proper rip off album.

It's unintelligible that they have not published this gem! Either they had a bad producer or they are not aware of how great they are! A JEWEL. SFY PERIOD! ! When I bought the BOXSET, I thought it would be edited. A shame, a bad decision 😢

Been listening to this for a couple of years now since it cropped up over on TTD, and I'm still obsessed with it. Hopefully more will surface from the sessions at Sarm West, Barwell Court and BWS at some point in time. What an absolute rough diamond this is, pure class musically and lyrically, it would have sat very well on SFY, but I guess SFY already had 'Soul Crying Out' on it, which I suppose was very much of a similar nature thematically. "There's people outside who should be inside" / "And maybe I'll write this ode unto you... it's 'People Stand Up Again" - brilliant stuff from Jim. The theme was so fitting back then with everything going on in Thatcher's Britain, and here we are I guess around 36 years later from this being penned circa 1988, and nothing's changed really has it. Same old compassionless and deliberately divisive crap from a new bunch of Tory faces... the ones who want to criminalise the homeless and shred their tents, the one's who partied it up in public office during lockdowns when the rest of the country, on its knees, abided by the rules, the ones who want to send those desperately fleeing to our shores from oppression and war-torn countries to give themselves half a chance at life back to a country with an appallingly bad human rights record. F the tories.

Beautiful instrumentation from 4’.00 mins on. A shame MacNeil dumped the Yamaha cp70 for a stacked Kawai (or similar) midi grand. It’s defo dated worse than the cp70. Burchill on fine form here.
