I just saw a hilarious video on facebook about how families are complicted in Norway. A guy was showing friends his photos of his family and saying this person is this and this person is that, and the friends were getting all confused by all the terms for all those family members including morfar, etc. It was ro funny especiallyl since I had just found this video!!!

Thanks SN for the very comprehensive collections [word lists] I'd find I'd have to break them up and start using them in sentences. [Drills etc.] The odd thing is how you sound like my nephew, and yes, I'm the 'weird' uncle. I was comparing Swedish. They really are dialects of one language with much of the vocabulary close to identical, but I believe Swedes and Norwegians don't think of it this way.

It might be added that another word for "svigersøster" is "svigerinne". At least that's the word I grew up with, here in the Oslo area.

In serbian language we don’t have different names for mother’s and father’s mother or father. We just have terms grandmother and grandfather. We don’t have term grandparents too (although we have term parents), but we have such different names for grandmother, 2nd , 3rd, 4th and other lines of cousins. We have names to the 13th line of cousins , but luckily we don’t use all of these names. We also have different names for wife’s or husband’s mother-in-law and father-in-law. And too one common name for both mothers-in-law and fathers-in-law. We also don’t have just terms aunt or uncle. We have a different name for each aunt or uncle. Only mother's and father’s sister have the same name. For the same reason, each of their children have a different name. :) Like in other languages, we also have names for the wife of my brother or husband of my sister. But we have names for husband’s brother and sister, wife’s brother and sister and wives of two brothers too. We even have names for the wife of my husband’s or wife’s brother and name for the husband of my husband’s or wife’s sister. Why would it be simple when it can be complicated. :)

Is tremenning not a third cousin? (The dictionary also translates it as “second cousin” but this is the definition I found in Norwegian: Tremenninger har minst en oldeforelder felles, men ikke felles foreldre eller besteforeldre.)
