I needed this when I was hauling 3/4 inch sheet plywood thirty feet to the roof. The progress capture was the pulley rope around my back praying that I wouldn't tire out. Great of you sharing this simple system.

Thank Zach, I like where you're going with the show. I think you should also look into Petzl roller biners. I have a Petzl Rollclip Z manual locking biner that I carry in my pfd along with the micro traxion. I think that's the way to go without putting too much weight on. However you are correct about needing people in your group knowing how to use them. The roller biners are great for light work and change of direction, but for heavy loads we'll bring out the big pulleys.

That's outstanding. I was just debating buying a gear toothed locking pulley or a gibbs device to do the capture on the rope block and tackle setup I was building for my GP portable 10 foot tripod when I found this. Looks like a money saver to me. :)

Great demonstration. Genuinely love this stuff and you do an awesome job. For the z-drag you mention at the end, I think you’d be happier with prusiks at both ends, or a prusik and a Tibloc on the far end (so you continue to capture progress).

Thanks for the nice words. Most rafters are working with a very basic set of equipment and skills so I prefer to teach basic systems with a basic level of equipment so that (hopefully) everyone on the team understands the rope systems being used. I leave more advanced stuff like the use of tiblocs to teams of advanced paddlers.

I agree, unless you're short on prussiks, you'd generally want to keep capturing your progress and just add a new prussik/biner/pulley to create the 3:1.

So can you use it to help you lower something down too? Does that need another rope?

The hollow block u mention? Is that the Aramid fibre weave style? I approached a height safety shop and when I told them the dimensions of the hollow block i scored from a highrise building in Brisbane city. It was being used for tying off safety Webbing around the perimeter of the top floor. I should have taken more. Lol the guys who setup the safety net threw out bundles of it. I took a 1.8 metre length. It's 25 mm wide by 8 mm thick. I wrapped around my 11 mm static rope to see if it will grab? But too thick. I could easily pass a 6 mm steel cable through and use a lanyard! In Australia we are behind in climbing products unlike you guys in the US. Sorry for rambling on! I love the way you explained this so well. In my head I knew about redirecting pulley system. Adding more etc. But sometimes you need to see it in action and bang! It comes back to you! Lol. I personally would not use the perimeter line. My suggestion would be to use a 2 or 3 point self equalizing anchor to d-rings.

A perfect example of carrying a prusik with a carabeiner already attatched. Lets say you did this without the pulley... would your carabeiner also slide the prusik?

No the prusik only slides if there is a self minding pulley

Zack, you can simplify your gear by replacing pulley, prussik and second binder with a Petzl Micro or Mini Traxion. I think CAMP makes a similar device.

Both of those devices are known for tearing the sheaths on ropes. I have them and use them occasionally but don't recommend them for people that don't understand their weaknesses. Also - I prefer equipment that most people are trained on and familiar with.

@@GearGarageTV I'm only aware of sheath damage caused by Mini/MicroTraxion when the rope is dynamically loaded (i.e. significant slack in rope and accelerating load). Is there a hazard in raft or swiftwater rescue that presents a dynamic load hazard more readily than in the vertical and near vertical mountain rescue I'm more familiar with? In other words, what water scenario should a rock rescue specialist be aware of to avoid dynamic loads with any progress capture, as they all become susceptible to failure under dynamic loads?

De-sheathing a rope with a toothed device also happens when using a rope diameter smaller than the manufacturer's recommendation. All progress capture devices including prussiks will fail when the haul rope is too thin for the device. With recent advancement in fibers, the old saying of 2mm greater rope diameter than prussik diameter is no longer accurate, but is a good place to start for many in this audience.

Love the videos Zach! But I disagree on your comment about pulleys and changing directions. Pulleys do offer a mechanical advantage, assuming friction-less bearings

iProject yes you are right they can offer mechanical advantage. The way I set this system up in this video does not provide mechanical advantage.

I appreciate all the replies. But when pulleys are used to lift or move an object, they do offer mechanical advantage. Why else would we used Z rigs? A 3:1 system allows a 300lb load to be moved with only 100lb of force. What am I missing here?

What happens when the boat releases and floats down river? Can this be released quickly to allow the rope to run out through the pulley?

No releasing it is not quick and easy

@@GearGarageTV If you need to, I'd use 7mm cord (not tied in a loop) with a munter mule and just the slip knot tie off so you can pull it if you need to release it quick.

What?! This is part of a z-drag. A z-drag is definitely more complicated because it requires setting this exact system up and THEN adding a prussic to the haul line with a pulley attached as well.
