This video covers the guard by distance which is a special kind of void to get hit. For that purepos it uses the rear guard of Bartitsu and invitations or baits to trigger a reaction of your opponent, just to land yourself an easy hit in tempo of his attack.
Bartitsu was a martial art designed for self-defense by Barton Wright in Edwardian London. The Bartitsu Academy of martial arts and physical culture includes different fighting arts as pugilism or bare knuckle boxing, Savate, Jiu Jitsu and Pierre Vignys new method of la canne - fighting with the walking cane for Gentlemen.
We will have a look at that topic from a HEMA point of view. Our historical fencing background gives us insides others may not have. At least protecting oneselfs with an cane or umbrella is even a topic today so it could be no bad idea to see what solutions the people of the past figured out for themselves.
Bartitsu got also popular as Arthur Conan Doyle let his figure Sherlock Holmes use Baritsu at the Reichenbach falls against his opponent Professor Moriarty. This makes Bartitsu so famous under Victorian or Edwardian era larper and in the Steampunkt community.
Bartitsu was not the only martial art uses the cane as a weapon, check out our other videos on that topic for example the method of Col. Monstery taught in New York city, be a cane master and join us!

It's the hat right? Must be the hat. Meanwhile I got comfortable with it. A good one to wear on our way to training 😁

I really enjoy your videos and your style of presentation! I only do staff and stick stuff 'on the side' but find your videos inspiring for this, and also for the Indian clubs. I've already taken on a few basic structure and strength exercises with the staff, which you demonstrated in earlier videos. Just one small language point, if I may be so free: when comparing things you tend to say "as" (influenced by German "als") when in English we'd say "like". For instance 6:15 "the second play starts as the first play". Actually in English we'd say "... starts like the first play". Greetings from Berlin

I beg to differ. I'm a native English speaker. The usage of 'like' instead of 'as' in this context is a recent import from American. It's not proper English, sorry. Don't take my word for it, just read some good books. Conan Doyle or Dickens wrote proper English, in which the usage of 'like' in this context would have been considered to be vulgar and bordering on illiterate. Hope you don't mind the correction.

Great video!! these actions are quite suitable for poorly trained people or if you need to quickly teach an inexperienced citizen self-defense. however, against an experienced person, such actions will lead to defeat.

This would also be the context I guess. Those invitations are hard against a good fighter but against a ruffian on the street it could work well.

In Britain it's a "boater" as seen worn by gentlemen at Cambridge University when punting on the River Cam.😊

I guess this is for fun. Fair play. In reality, has anyone seen two fellows fighting with canes? Watch an advanced kendo player: very simple, not stylised but takes decades of practice. Again, I assume this us just fun, because in no way does it apply to welf-defense. Oh, and a hooked cane is far more effective if needed.

First at all, you are right it's for information purpose. These are real self-defense advises from 1902. Infact there will be also people telling you it's not more difficult then Kendo, but you on the other hand advise a hooked cane, which would make the handling even more complex 🤔 Sorry if I take the answer a bit to serious 😅
