HAHA i loved that smile after the perfect face cut, like.. "shiiiiiiit, I KNOW i look good." a master of his craft people, thats what thousands of hours looks like. perfect face, perfect back cut, perfect hinge. god dam can we get a ruler on that stump i bet its 1/3of the tree deep. half of that wide, open on the face, ten percent on the hinge and a little less than 2/3 back cut. i give that A+ teach, thanks for sharing

There’s a new climber the most important thing in this video that I learned, Was that X lanyard technique. I can’t wait to go up in a leaner even if it’s just a slight one to try this out. Partick, i use this exact system for virtually all my SRT climbing with a few extra tricks that give me multiple options. After isolating my TIP, i tie the AB near the end of the leg that comes back down and quickie link it to the standing part. All my ropes have tight eyes on each end and before i pull the anchor up i carabiner the ends together. This eliminates the need for a retrieval line. It also allows that side to act as an access line in case it is needed for rescue. If my initial TIP is not my ideal point, i can reset once in the tree without having to pull a ton of line up, simply undo the quickie reset and requickie. Lastly, the entire rope length can follow me through the tree and redirects like a moving rope system but without the friction of MRS. This same quality allows me to pull the rope out without the friction fight at the end of the climb that would normally be there with a regular straight canopy tie. Give this technique a try and see how you like it. Oh, one more thing, when you do pull the rope at the end of the climb, remember to also release the quickie and AB

Thanks for posting, Patrick. Yes, it all makes great sense. X-ing your lanyard, have not heard about it till here. You know, Patrick, it is very helpful to see the same concept explained by several different professionals (e.g. SRT canopy anchor with butterfly knot and quickie) because it reinforces/verifies/validates/confirms the technique by noting the aspects on which they all agree, giving one a solid grasp on the essential concept. Very helpful!

We call that spar landing, "planting a tree" on my crew. You're a caring arborist, you don't just remove, you also plant. I could laugh at you if I hadn't done the same manuver a few weeks ago. Interesting timing regarding the quickie anchor. I've been experimenting with some 550 Paracord tied to my quickie anchor and using that to simply pull the system down to me on a spar, or to a secondary position in the canopy. That way I can simply use a running bowline or choked quickie without having to use the tail on my climb line as the retrievable. Just something I've been experimenting with, little bit out of the box I suppose. Excellent vid as usual, keep em coming.

I need a retrieval ball. I keep using a knot to retrieve my ring and ring. I tie the loop from my throw line into the knot in case I need to pull it back down and try again. Since I'm about to buy a quickie maybe I should just buy the darn ball, too!

This is the same pull-through SRT anchor system I use as adopted from industrial access techniques. I just use a steel Kong 50kn biner for the hardlink connection, keeping the screwgate barrel facing outward to avoid any potential rubbing. Once loaded with your weight it won't rotate or side load etc. Also use this pull-through system with secondary long lanyards of rope to aid climb through the canopy same as would DRT. It's my preference, find working a fixed line often has many advantages.

great lessons as usual...... ive been climbing and timber falling for 31 years.... one thing a old timer taught me once,, is to NEVER have your climbing line attached to your body when doing big chunks or big dangerous branches, ( unless you can hide your climb line out of the way ) because if that big chunk somehow wraps around your climbing line on the way down,,, YOU ARE TOAST....!!!!! just sharing.....R.G.

There’s a pretty prolific tree guy out of Japan, daigentanoen is his KZfaq handle, that has a ton of videos implementing this technique(as well as others). His are all pretty much all show, no tell. But worth a look. I think I saw a comment somewhere that said they referred to it as the “Texas Tug”. Either way good video. Keep em coming. Thumbs up to your format. The narration helps understand the thought process behind the actions. And of course we all make mistakes and sometimes get in a rush when the stakes are lower. Props.

I looked him up, he's got some really good stuff! And some really interesting climbing spikes... The Texas Tug is a little bit more complicated than this, you add a micropulley below the cinch to help with retrieval if you've gone through a redirect. I will be doing a video on it coming up shortly... Thanks for watching! - Patrick

Absolutely lol. I've had a few big pieces go down end first. I've never seen anything that size remain standing. Tree work is perverse in achieving the impossible if you intended it. BTW, I've been reading Jeff Jepson's book, Knots and Work. A bowline on a bite (yeah, it takes practice, harder than butterfly, in my case) can potentially solve the side load problem on a carabiner. I don't see a "quickie" being any quicker than a screw link carabiner (which Jepson recommends).

I just picked up a couple of Notch V3 Quickies from Treestuff for this very purpose. I was trying to learn the running alpine butterfly and wonder why not just use a running bowline instead for a spar anchor? I suppose they will all serve it's designed purpose if executed properly. I just laugh, as yesterday I was pulling my SRT rope from the canopy and forgot to untie my figure 8 at the end of the rope before retrieving. That 8 is stuck hard against the butterfly and the tail dangles far from reach! I will be setting a new rope after this low pressure system moves through to collect my effects. Hopefully my new quickies will be here by then. Cheers

lol @8:46, happens to the best and worst of us. I also tend to sing Toby while in the tree, I started in this racket when I was 19, now I'm 42, its ok to have to remind ourselves..............

Do you like you silky saw leg mounted? I am considering going to that. I have mine dangling from my hip and it makes it hard to pull it out of the scabbard if its fully seated in it with only one hand. My only concern with leg mounting is reaching it.

I use a leg mount as well. I prefer it always being in the same spot when I reach for it and being able to use one hand like you mentioned. I would say that it can be a little annoying when rope or small branches get caught in it. Things can get wedged between the handle and your leg, but it's never really been something that outweighed the described benefits, for me personally. I strap mine on my lower leg so the butt-end of the silky handle is just about at the middle of my knee cap but the tip of the sheath doesn't protrude below my boot. I've never had an issue reaching it. If you strap it higher than this, the handle will stick out when you bend your knee which isn't ideal.

That leg scabbard is one of the cheapest purchases I’ve made to make tree work easier. It’s more out of the way, yet more accessible at the same time.

The 1/5th rule lands a log flat. What's the rule to stab a log into the ground vertical?

Where do you acquire/buy the slick pin?

There are multiple versions available, they all come with the shackle and the pin together. There's the original Singing Tree version, then there's the Notch version, then there's the larger version made by Richard Mumford at Climbing Innovations... - Patrick

What's wrong with that landing huh!? How else do you plant a new tree!? Especially since climbers aren't qualified or certified to use a shovel so that looks good to me my man! That sucker will sprout out into a bit beautiful willow tree now. I recently ordered a quickie for this exact purpose i cant wait to start employing it for canopy and spar work. Keep up the great work Patrick!
