A very old practice is to place rolled up newspapers, secured closed, around the garden at night. In the morning, shake out the hiding earwigs into a pail containing soapy water.

I have to tell you a story @TheProvidentPrepper . One year my husband was trimming our privacy hedge. There was a maple tree growing in the hedge, so he laid on the ground on his side with a saw to saw it out. When he stood up he said he could feel something in his ear. I ran and got a tweezer because I could not see anything. I was blindly going in his ear with the tweezer. On the third time pulling it out, there was a big earwig in the tweezers. I screamed and dropped it all. It must have been living in the privacy hedge. He has never laid on ground again!

I use this trick as a supplement to feed my chickens. I change the recipe a little because I dont want to feed them that much sodium. Earwigs are nocturnal and chickens are not and there are to many stray cats around to let my chickens run around 9,000 sq ft unproctected.

I didn’t think to use a hole puncher for the containers. Great idea! I also didn’t know you could add water to the solution so that’s great to know. I think the weather has really made the earwigs more of a problem. I heard they like wet areas, so it would make sense they have thrived with the unusual weather.

The one beastie that freaks me out, being nipped a few times when little. Here in Scotland we call them Forky Tails, Gollichers or Gollichs. The have wings and can and do fly. Gardeners put straw in an upturned plant pot put on a cane, they crawl in through the night, dispose of next day, set the little buggers on fire.😮

I use the method discussed here and then strain and feed them to my chickens! They freak out and eat them all. Olive oil and soy sauce marinated earwigs, yum! Olive oil is hood for chii, snd its better than throwing the earwigs in the trash or dumping them out somewhere. Plus chicken treats get expensive. And at night I go out with my headlamp, dust buster and bucket of oily water. I wither shake them into the bucket off the larger plants or use the dust buster for smaller ones. During the day I put out seed starting trays with soil in them and water them to keep it wet. Then i move the trays and quickly vacuum them up. They go straight to the chicken coop for snack time. They do a lot of damage to my garden but its better this year. For 2 years i could not figure out why my seeds were not sprouting till I went out one night and saw it all happening. To everyone dealing with this issue I feel your pain and you are not alone in this fight 😂.

This concoction really works! This is the first year I tried it and was horrified and astounded at how many were trapped. Additionally, huge cockroaches (that I didn't even know I had) were in there with them. After a few days, not many more were trapped, which I hope means they're gone. I'm keeping some traps out there, though, just in case.

How do you make this idea work IN the home? We don't even have a garden. It's an apartment complex, so placing anything outside our door in the soil is forbidden and would be attacked by the sprinklers anyway. Our only option for traps is inside beside doors, but they couldn't be buried, so the dish would have to be shallow enough for the earwigs to crawl in. Would just the lid of a container be sufficient to prevent them from wriggling back out?

You two are amazing! My pest problem is grasshoppers, they totally ruin my Swiss chard and others. They take over and after working so hard to build a garden their damage is discouraging. It’s hard work maintaining a garden with our increasing heat. I can’t do pesticides either, I don’t really believe the "organics" at the grocery store are truly pesticide free, at least not all of them. Kylene you Rock! Jonathan, what a guy!! Thank you both! Keep an eye out for Nolo bait. Right now, it is not in production for this current year. Apparently there are some issues they are working out. In the past we have purchased ours at IFA (farm store). It has worked amazingly well for us. It has a very short shelf life, so you can't save it from year to year. It targets grasshoppers and mormon crickets. It is a biologic control that contains naturally occurring Nosema locustae spores. These spores are uniformly applied to flaky wheat bran at a rate of at least 1 billion spores per pound of bran. The bran is consumed by the grasshoppers and they become infected with the spores. Young grasshoppers that consume the bait will die more quickly than older stages. As Nosema locustae builds up in the gut of heavily infected grasshoppers the insects become lethargic and reduce their feeding. Infected grasshoppers are seen by healthy grasshoppers as additional food sources and are cannibalized. This natural behavior further spreads Nosema locustae throughout the grasshopper population. Additionally, infected females can pass the spores through the egg-laying process. The progression and persistence of this organism provides long-term benefit to the landowner without environmental damage.

I had grasshopper as well so I made a little grasshopper cocktail of garlic and jalapeños I blended with water. I let it sit for about an hour, then strained and sprayed the watery part of the cocktail in the early evening to decrease damage to beneficials. It seems to be working well enough that I’m not seeing any more grasshoppers but I’ll continue to spray every few days during summer Hope this works for you too! The garlic and jalapeños came from my garden so very economical

@@recess7018 For grasshoppers: I garden in raised boxes but this would likely work in ground too. I use bug netting that I get on Amazon. You have to remove it when things blossom for pollinators to do their work. Last year the grasshoppers descimated my raspberries just as they were about to be ripe enough to pick. Then they started on the leaves and stripped my plants. This year I used the netting and I just had my first bowl of raspberries yesterday. About 8 hoppers managed to get in, but they didn't even begin to do the damage I had last year. I have chickens and they help, but living by large tracts of farm land has the chickens badly outnumbered. The bug netting is GREAT! You will need to anchor them down so the hoppers don't crawn under. I used metal T posts that I wasn't using for anything else and just laid them on the netting around my patch (which as I said are in raised beds).

Get some chickens and let them roam free in your yard, they would take great care of the earwigs. Luckily we don't have so many earwigs that they would be a problem, rather they help me to keep other insect pests under control, so I specifically attract them with flowerpots full of hay that I have spread all over the garden.
