As my Dad told me, there is something to learn every day. If there wasn't, you weren't paying attention.

Next project if you haven’t already started it yet is a tap follower. 😉

I ended up buying one for 6 bucks. to get one in hte shop but I do plan on making one someday. Problem is my taps done have a divot and a flat but the really small ones have a point. This follower was supposed to have a hole on one side for those pointed ended taps...it doesnt...maybe ill drill one myself. Regardless a tap follower is long overdue.

It has been very handy vs using the hacksaw I started with, I dont know how @artisanmakes does it. He must have Popeye arms.

Great project, get yourself a sharpie Magnum, I prefer blue, you won’t regret it

Yes, less messy than using a dykem jar.

yeah this dykem is messy. Just added a couple sharpies to my amazon cart. :-) Ill save the old dykem for a larger project that requires some layout.

Taps are a consumable, it gives you a chance to replace the busted cheaper ones with a quality tap, one at a time, helps the pocket😅 I made up a point on the lathe from bar stock, a bit of light pressure on the quill handle gets them started straight. Taps have a hole in the end for centering, and try and do all the ops on each hole with the X and Y locked, then move. You know your centered then. You do have a DRO, so you can drill all the holes in one go, just make sure you locked back in on your hole centers for tapping. Cool project 👍👌🇦🇺(On my last project I broke 2 spiral taps, 2 carbide endmills removing said taps, carbide won over HSS until the end when they bound up and shattered. It's called learning😉)

Thanks, My plan will be to replace these as I break them and I may even buy a couple common taps now that Ive been using more of. I need to be better about locking my unused axis during my milling ops. As you said all learning but enjoying it very much. Sounds like you had a heck of a time on that project breaking that tooling. :-)

@@deezworkshop it was a painful leaning experience destroying carbide endmills, but all up, maybe $30 worth of tools. I was messing around with a square ER32 collet block and pretty sure it was hardened some how. I does make me wonder, is it my bad technique OR cheap tools? Or just hardened steel? I'll have to try some better taps to see👍👌🇦🇺

Yep, Thansk I have used it a few times and it makes an incredible finish. The look on these little blocks is terrible but thats what the endmills do, As I work on more projects finishes are going to be something I work on. I may vly cut the top of it sometime but for now the endmill look is what ill stick with on these.

You can take the safety arm off. Take the clip off the top pull the arm down. And it will work fine. It's always in the way.

Already have. It became a real problem when using my R8 collet holders. I removed it really had no choice. You are right it is easy to remove and without breaking anything if you want to put it back.

oh SNAP! i hate when that happens!!!! sorry bud for the 8,, and smaller stuff, i invested in the Irwin self aligning taps and they have saved my goose more than once! totally worth it! just FYI.

Deez, I dont know how much of a hassle you think tightening and loosening the draw bar bolt is when you change out the collets or the drill chuck but i got tired of it quick. So I ordered a 10mm square socket with 3/8 drive and i bought a small Ryobi 3/8 drive 4 volt ratchet to tighten and loosen the draw bolt. This little ratchet doesnt have enough torque to break it free on its own but once i break it loose it spins it loose real quick. Same thing when tightening up a tool, spin it up and i give it a final hand tighten.

I made an improvement to this setup recently. Video coming out soon to show my solution. I like your idea though. The flat bar wrench it comes with works. But that’s about all I can say about it. I don’t care for it. I do see the value in a ratcheting device so you don’t need to use the flat spindle wrench. Someday I’ll improve it again but I think you will find my solution interesting. I hope so anyway.

Hi Deez, When you chose your drill size you went to a smaller size than the guide. You should go to the larger size . It is much easier to work with a slightly oversize hole than a undersized hole when tapping. When you can afford it you really need to buy a number/letter set of drills . You can go with a relativelycheap set to start. You will have to 'mike' each drill before you use it as the accuracy of cheap sets is poor. That said , it doesn't really matter as long as the sets progress up and down in diameter and you measure the size beforehand. Drill your hole with a regular drill underside with your regular drills then , complete the hole with a measured drill from you letter set. Another way to gain some accuracy might be to purchase a fractional set in the range that you use most often Good luck.

This coming year is the year I plan to replace the super cheap tooling that is problematic, Drills bits are one for sure. I have been looking at Chicago Latrobe or Cle-Line...There are a few decent sets out there for sure. Taps are on the list as well, I may replace those as needed and use the case I have. Thanks for the tip, Maybe ill bite the bullet and get a good 29 piece fractional and 60 piece # set then work towards a letter set. Then there is 118 and 135 degree sets, I think I'll stick with 135 as I keep reading its better for harder materials like steel and metals.

Deez, One mid priced tap and die set that I can recommend are those made by Gearwrench. For the price they perform well and the holder has a ratchet. I think they are an American company so they should be available. to you. God luck , .Mike.

@@mikecrowley3102 I will look them up, Thanks. I am either going that route of a decent set or just going to replace the ones I break or use often as I need them. I need a good quality tap wrench too. Not sure im ready to make one yet.
