I am 56. I bought this album in 1986 and wore out two lps, a few tapes and a cd(too many scratches)from listening to them so much. I love so many different kinds of music. I have thousands of lps, tapes, cds....from 1976 when I bought my first 45 from Grants dept store in Allentown, PA. Only a few recordings that I have, never sound dated, don't have any filler songs and keep me interested and Simple Mind's "Once Upon A Time" is one of those rare magical and timeless recordings that makes me feel great.

I have to agree friend, this album keeps me coming back. I'm just a few years younger than you, this album is indeed timeless rock experience. It's so well mixed, the snare is powered by the universe, the vocals are perfect, the guitars just wrap it all together. This is their peak and it's a high bar for others to reach.

I don't think Robin Clark got enough credit for her singing in the band. I know she was just a backup vocalist. But she really made some of these songs come to life when she sang.

Mikenkfalls P You are two thousand percent CORRECT. Robin was a major component of this band and that voice kinda reminds u of the late great Vista Williams. Not to mention Helen Terry singing with Culture Club and the British soul singer Princess.

yep I pity kids who did not grow up in the 80s with things like : going to malls, no smartphones or social media to clog daily lives, and the joy of going to rent a movie and pick up pizza! I took that for granted as a kid and when I hear songs from that era it takes me back to a perfect time!

What demands?!! Recording Miami Vice every Friday night w your VCR on time? Making sure your hair had enough hairspray to set a small country on fire? I grew up in the 80's in NYC and I don't recall any hardships that forced me to grow up sooner than I had to. The music was just better. Kids had to go out of their way to discover bands or hang out at Tower Records for hours looking at albums. Today everything is right at your fingertips, instant gratification. There's no fun in that. We had it good!

Because we're the greatest generation that has lived... Generation X! I know,there was just something amazing about growing up in the 80's? It was during my childhood & if I could ever live in a decade forever It would be me at age 3 in 1980,up to 13 in 1990. Star Wars,Transformers,He-Man,Conan the Barbarian,the toys,the music,& the movies. I loved everything about it!

A lot of people tend to diss the later Simple Minds stuff but I honestly think it's just as great as their earlier stuff. If not in some ways better. Tracks like this really make Simple Minds songs sound so timeless. Robin Clark was probably the best thing to happen to this band.

Everything they did was good. They play this one where I work, Walmart, Walmart Radio daily. Of course, The Breakfast Club and Don't You Forget About Me, was pure genius. It just fit the movie so well. It did sort of overshadow their other work. Everything they've done is so good.

I got this cassette as a gift on my 17th birthday..After the party that night, I listened to this track over and over and over. Maybe twenty five times. And it will always remind me of the Space Shuttle Challenger explosion. January 1986

+Christian B Yeah music is a very generational thing, a lot of people seem to not get this. Music that we loved growing up older people told us it was crap. Just like when they in turn were growing up and listening to the likes of Elvis and such and people told them THAT was crap.

One of the greatest concerts ive ever seen was in october 1986. Sydney entertainment centre. Simple minds are unbelivable and brilliant live. That night lives with me for a long time.

Took a while to grow on me, but this is my favorite Simple Minds song. The guitar riff, the lady's powerful singing, and his style. It just all comes together perfectly here. Alive and Kicking maybe a close second. The obvious one is great too, but had the benefit of brilliant lyrics and perfect matching with a movie to lift it.

I remember hearing Jim say in an interview that this song was inspired by hearing Lech Walesa's wife speak of her love for her husband while he was a political prisoner. Later, when Lech Walesa became president of Poland, he and his wife came to London and rode through the city with the Queen to Buckingham Palace. So their story had as close to a fairy tale ending as you can have in real life.

This song takes on a completely different dimension when Jim Kerr stated that the lyrics were inspired by the wives of Polish dissidents that were imprisoned by the Soviet Union. Bless artists like these who spoke their truth and fight for freedom.
