John Heaton of the Simplex+ owners group on Facebook entered the question- "What are the differences between the SP24 and the SP 28 (stock coil) and what is the best software version to run with it, and why?" into the group's Challenge Lori feature.
groups/286630469068377/about
I chose his question as my first Challenge, and this video is the result. It is a bit long, but I wanted to explain my answers and make sure I had answered his question fully.
I apologise for the sound levels, the neighbourhood children decided to play just outside my fence, and the dog was confused as she thought I was talking to her, so keeps appearing in the film. Hopefully the distractions won't take away from the information given.
Let me know what you think!

Perfectly stated. I used my SP24 on the beach (US) for the first time yesterday, and I couldn't believe how stable it was! This is a beach that gets hunted every day by several retired folk who are able to spend hours on it, and I was very impressed that the machine still found four coins. Thank you for the great video!

Another great informative video, thanks. Just one point - at 9 minutes - it isn't the width of the coil that determines how much ground you cover, it is the length. The DD windings go fore and after, front to back ... the SP24 is 9.5 inches long and the stock is 11 inches so the SP24 covers 86.36% of the ground that the stock does - length, not width. Soo ... 86 swings of the stock would need 100 of the 24 to cover the same ground, which is quite a difference. However, being half the width the SP24 is much better at winkling in between rubbish.

Very good video Lori. For me, one of the biggest mistakes that people swinging bigger coils make is to run their gain too far too high...There's not the need... Big (11" plus DD's), do NOT require big gain. A big DD running on ' half impulse' reaches down to basically the same depth as it does on 'trans-warp drive', and if the MD's recovery speed is reasonable, a bigger DD will hit tiny targets next to iron at depth, because there is less 'Fog' caused by 'over application of resources'. 'Fog' is caused by too much gain being applied. The coil is pulling in a maelstrom of electrically charged mineral particles etc, that over-ride the MD's 'brain'. It cannot 'see the wood for the trees'. It 'blinds' the machine...For years I ran my Tejon with a 10"x!2" DD. I NEVER ran it above 3 on gain. It 'saw' through mineralised dirt down to 11"'s and hit cut halves/tiny denarii. Above 3 it went ####in' mental, and it had another 7 increments of mental-ness to fry my brains (ears) on!... That's why it was called 'Animal'; t'was not for the 'if in doubt, flat out' breed or the 'new to detecting, I ####in' HATE this machine' fraternity,.. However, in saying all this drivvle, my favourite coil next to the 11x12 was the 5"x10" which could be 'wound up'. to 8 Max...5"x10" DD's were MADE for 18 plus kHz MD's; end of...I totally agree with your assessments Lori, if the MD is run flat out on a 11" DD, but 'Who would do that?', especially on vlf 12kHz. Take care, and keep up your great work please Lori, your tutorials ought to help a lot of people, if they heed you.

Awww, thank you Tim. I am always very pleased when I read your comments and there isn't anything you've needed to add to my assessments. The comments you've made about gain (sensitivity for new detectorists unfamiliar with the term 'gain') are a great supporting argument to my beliefs about the purpose of 2.77 and the smaller coils- thank you my friend!

Just bought an SP24. Took it to the beach this week and dug up 36 targets in 90 minutes. Half of them were aluminum (why do Brits pronounce it al-U-minium?). And 2 days later pullec up my first ever silver quarter, a 1943. I like this coil a lot. Really pinpoints well too.

Lori, many thanks for the video. I’ve fitted the coil, currently run on 2.78 and will hopefully get out tomorrow for a few hours on stubble. Maybe I’ll have to install 2.77 to get the most out of it. I’ll let you know. Cheers

Can you tell me if the SP 24 on version 2.78 in your opinion worthwhile. Thanks.

I am using the sp24 coil and v2.78. On your advice, I changed the version to 2.77 ( on the 2 units I own, bought in the last month ) to see if it would help me get more depth.. Every 4 seconds I get a detection tone and Target ID of a random high number. It repeats and was pretty annoying. Even if the coil is 5 feet up in the air. It happens on both units I flashed to 2.77. I could not get rid of it by ground balancing, toning down sensitivity, anything I tried.. no matter how far I toned anything down. Every 4 seconds. I didn't have this issue on 2.78. so I am reloading that and pray it goes away again. Followup: 2.78 removed the repeating tones.

Hi Gene, it’s a technique for determining junk signals- before you dig. More details in my video link. Thanks for your comment. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/aL2Ch9iH2N6rfnk.html

Try this, groundbalance in beach than go back to field. In field not groundbalance more. In 2.78 5 sensitivity.

I've not got 2.78, but I do use the method of ground balancing in beach, then changing mode, when I'm at the beach :) Thanks for watching!
