In this video, I walk though an EV Display Board which has all of the parts of an Electric Vehicle and talked about the parts them selves and showed the parts working from start to finish. This demonstration gives the simplified explanation of how Electric Cars Work.
I know I said a few thing off like one spot I said milli amp volts when I meant to say just mili volt drop. My video editor won't allow me to change the audio. But you get the basic picture of how an electric car will work.
If your interested in seeing the schematic, please see my other companion video to this.

Controllers in EVs have diodes that they call a Free Wheel Diode to allow coasting without using any power. So you can let off of the throttle and coast a long ways before needing more power again to speed up. Makes for very easy pulse and glide driving (hyper miler style of driving). In my exmaple coasting means no power applied to the motor. Only thing slowing you down is friction and air drag. You can have a controller setup to cause drag (regen) but that is a special controller/motor combo.

Great visual method for explaining the concepts & parts of an EV. If you're taking requests, I'd like to suggest a video that explains in newb terms all the terms that get thrown around and why it matters. From how to explain the electronic talk like AC / DC, phases, volts, kilowatts, and all the other terms that get throw around when discussing EVs. I can read the dictionary definitions but I'd like to know how it fits into the actual application of EVs. Thank you.

I planned on adding the emergency shut off and fuse online from battery pack but I don’t wanna hook all this up for it to blow/burn something up cuz I forgot part that I was still missing ?? Any help or answers that could help me out

My best advice is to find an EV already converted. There are lots for sale out there. Usually you can save some money and you can start driving right away. You should also find your local EAA club and talk with them and learn as much as you can. For your other questions, the batteries provide the amps used, so the batteries provide the 500 amps. You can use a generator but adds cost and you have to get a big one to be able to continuouly drive. I hope this helps.

Nice Video!! Even though I already know a bit about electrical systems, this just helps to make it clear. Although, what about coasting? This set up would essentially be applying a brake when you let off the throttle. Do you just need a proper controller that provides the coasting function? And is the amperage maintained during coast?

@deputy1040 There are charts on line to know for sure what size of wire to use. So use the online charts to look up how much current each gauge of wire can handle and size it appropriately to what the controller can do. Going bigger doesn't hurt anything, better to be in a safe limit compared to the top end of a gauge of wire. For the fuse, that depends on the controller, find out the current and get the appropriate size.

Power brakes on an EV are supplied by a vacuum pump, so you use the car's factory brake system. Power steering can be accomplished by a secondary motor turning the factory steering pump or conver to an electric version like the Toyota MR2, or you could also use the tail shaft of main motor (but only works when motor is spinning). The A/C system is just like the power steering system. For the stereo, lights, signals, those all use the car's factory 12 volt system so no changes in those devices.

The throttle is just an input device for the controller to know how much power your requesting to apply to the motor. So the controller is doing PWM to the motor based on your throttle position you have set.

I see what you're saying. However, consider this. When coasting in neutral gas is being input to run engine at idle, losing gas. When coasting in highest gear possible, you're still losing energy by running the engine and crankshaft. Hybrid cars will brake regen and shut off engine when not needed. Brake regen by itself won't be more efficient than coasting but when you add all the things that go with them, I think it is.

@akai454 This display model is an DC series system. Everything would be the same for an AC system except for the controller and the motor. You use the same batteries, fuses, switches, contractors, etc. The controller of an AC system uses the DC power from the batteries and converts it to a 3 phase AC output. So what I covered in this display works for both AC and DC systems.

Several people have shown this in videos and on the web. If you use one motor to spin the other the output is always less. Try cranking a hand generator like something on a emergency radio. Feel how much force it takes to have it make electricity to just power a radio. It takes a lot, so the driving motor would have to work hard to spin the other motor but in the end the output would be less, how much less depends on the motors and how sensetive your testing equipment is but its aways less.

With the energy shutoff you still had power to the key. I would think you would want to kill all power with that switch. Therefore putting tapping the power fir the key on the output side if the emergency switch.

My question goes more on this way. Hope you can hall understand. An electromagnetic motor is in fact an alternator and vice-versa, right? In this electric mode veichles, you induce energy from a batery to make the motor spin; while spinig the motor is producing energy it self, that you can send back to the batery and re-charge it, consecutively, till it dies completly. So, if the veichle is moving you have energy, if you have energy you can do something with it, always! Right?

Do you still disengage the clutch and shift a manual transmission the same way as a gas engine?
@ElectricFormula
@ElectricFormula 9 жыл бұрын
Tucker Not Sucker! Typically on a conversion, if the clutch is left in the vehicle, you would disengage the clutch to shift the gears. It makes shifting gears easier. The car would kind of drive a lot like an automatic; what I mean by that is you put the car into 2nd gear. Once it is in gear, even at a stop, you don't need to disengage the clutch again until you want to shift. So taking off you leave the clutch engaged, drive at 25 or so MPH and you approach a stop sign, you just apply the brakes. Never touching the clutch. On a gas engine you have to disengage the clutch because the Gas engine wants to keep spinning but on an EV, no power is applied to the motor so it just freely rotates, so no need to disengage the clutch in this scenario. To go faster, you would eventually shift into 3rd gear. So it is only slightly different than driving a stick shift car, but you quickly figure the trick out.

@eliotshaw4225
@eliotshaw4225 9 жыл бұрын
Tucker Not Sucker! I removed my manual transmission from my conversion as with an electric car you only need two gears, one for torque and one for speed, these gears change automatically in my setup which I engineered, however I can override the change if I require torque for longer or the pitch of the car requires torque. It cost me less than $500 for the setup. The momentum of the car rolling when you're at speed allows the motor to generate electricity instead of consuming it which is also a plus with not disengaging the transmission if you go down that path.

How does the little electric motor work?
@ElectricFormula
@ElectricFormula 11 жыл бұрын
REGEN really only works on AC motors, there are ways to do it in DC motors but it is really hard and usually not done. But REGEN is just the process of converting momentum into electricity through the electric motor. It takes a lot of force to make electricity so that is why it slows down the car when applied. If you were going to stop anyways, might as well collect energy so it can be used to accelerate again. But its not a lot of energy gained but better than nothing.

I am pretty sure the drop in voltage when you rev the motor is not due to "the batteries working harder," as you stated, but rather due to the back-EMF induced in the coils of the motor: "When the armature of a d.c. motor rotates under the influence of the driving torque, the armature conductors move through the magnetic field and hence e.m.f. is induced in them as in a generator. The induced e.m.f. acts in opposite direction to the applied voltage V (Lenz's law) and in known as back or counter e.m.f. (Quora.com)"

There is a small black box on the left which recharges the battery just like in an EV. No system will be self sustaining, there are gimics out there that make it look like it is but to much energy is used to make the EV to go which will never be recaptured (not even with regenerative breaking). So you always have to have an external power source to recharge weather it is an on-board generator or plugging in to an wall outlet.

I agree in terms of driving smart. I do that too, and I don't understand people who keeps accelerating when the light in front of them is indicating red. A place I have been to before is tncscooters (google it). They have the basic upgrades for a lot of scooters which could be used for a go-kart (not extreamly fast through). I actually have an electric go-kart started but it is unfinished. I have a old golf cart motor for the powerplant and use something like an Alltrax controller. It will be setup for 48 volts , so it would be a real screamer so would probably need to have a way to put it in low (24v)or high (48v).

You can do a manual trans or automatic. The manual trans will be more efficient than the auto. The auto was designed with shift points of an ICE in mind. With the electric motor, the shift points would be different. You can modify the auto trans to have better shift points. One of the guys in our club did that, its exensive but he does have an automatic EV. Can do a conversion without a trans but got to have a much bigger expensive motor to do that. Easier to just use the transsmission.

With a CVT, you could get away with a smaller AC motor. I don't know of anyone doing a conversion yet with a CVT but I don't see any reason why one couldn't be used. Might have to have the logic updated on the CVT to keep a different RPM, but I think would be doable.
