John Hoar is one of the most exciting watercolourists in Britain today. His dynamic impressionistic style is based on simplifying the painting process. In this exciting new DVD John paints on the stunning North Norfolk Coast in and around the picturesque harbour of Blakeney and in the next door village of Cley Next the Sea.
Using only two brushes and five colours, John shows how to strip a scene down to it's basics and interpret it as a loose dynamic watercolour.

Thank you so much for your kind comments. John Hoar is a complete one off - a real character and one of the finest watercolour painters around. See his other release Watercolour without Tears - the trailer is also here on You Tube.

John uses the blue shade. He actually uses Winsor Blue from Winsor and Newton.

@taopaw The Palete comes from Craig Young at The Paint Box Company in Ludlow, England. They are all hand made and thus very expensive.

I bought a Phthalocyanine Blue from M Graham for these lessons but it seems too much of a bright blue compared to John Hoar's Thalo Blue. There were at least two Thalo Blues in the various brands of paint at the store, a green one and a blue one. What does John use?

Thanx for your reply TowhHouse. I am definitely a John Hoar fan and hoping that someone will give me his newest dvd for Christmas. In the mean time: In the sky for the Cley Church, he mixes something with his blue to make the gray that is in the sky as well as making the variation of blues. I am replaying the video but do not catch what he mixes with the (thalo or rather Windsor) blue to make that lovely gray.

I have asked John and he says that as that was four years ago he cannot exactly remember but he says typically he would use either a brown (burnt umber or burnt sienna to make a warmer grey) or add paynes grey to the Winsor Blue. He does stress that these are all Winsor and Newton colours. Do check out John's new website to se his latest paintings: www.jhoar.com/ from there you can contact him direct.

Unfortunately, the music used on this film is especially composed for film and television and is not available for sale. But it is lovely.

You say it's very difficult, but let's be honest, he's been doing it for many years and even one year of hard training in watercolour (as long as you already have a good base in art) would be enough to get at least proficient. And then after that it's just improving and improving.

Yes he uses a soft pencil - usually a 2B or 4B. He sharpens it with a knife NEVER with pencil sharpener which gives a point that is too thin.
