It's actually not the original. It was sung by a guy named John Henry Kurtz. Written by a country songwriter named Mentor Williams. Dobie definitely made it his though.

@@sealdrup Steve, the songwriter is the brother of Paul Williams who wrote a lot of hits for the Carpenters, the love song from a Star is Born called Evergreen and Three Dog Night just to name a few. Songwriting runs in their family guess. :)

This just made me look him up. I knew he had passed away but I didn't realize it's 11 years already. And it said when he passed he "donated 100% of his musical assets and royalties in trust to benefit St. Jude Children's Research Hospital and to The Tennessee School for the Blind". What a special man. RIP.

I was 8 years old when this came out in 73. It is rare when a voice and a song like this come along, but when it does you appreciate it. I have appreciated this song and Dobie ever since. I still have the 45 of this(it's a record youngins). We need more of this type of music in the world for it would be a much better place. Simply, thank you all for doing this. Us older generation admire you younger folks for taking us back in time to simpler things. Much love.

It is hard to imagine how big of a hit this was for Dobie Gray back around the early 1970s. It was everywhere and on every rock radio station. Part of my teen years that I always remember whenever it gets played. Superior Asia and BJ! And I'm like you BJ. Rock and the Blues comforts my inward being if the song is right. I think my all-time favorite quote by a musician was made by Dobie Gray. I was driving late at night back in the 60's,and he was being interviewed by a radio station dj,who asked him about the changes that have happened in his life since this song hit the air waves. Dobie thought about it for a few seconds, and said "Well,I have noticed that the girls treat me a lot differently now than they did when I was still working at the toilet seat factory". I lost it and almost ran off the freaking road due to laughing so hard.

The lyrics are so point on....’day after day I’m more confused but I look for the light though the pouring rain’....‘I don’t understand the things I do’....’the world outside looks so unkind’....‘just give me the beat, boy, & free my soul, I want to get lost in your rock & roll & drift away’! I got so excited when I saw y’all had reacted to it. And I wasn’t disappointed, loved that y’all appreciated this wonderful song also but I knew y’all would.
